I manufacture paint. You would be shocked if I told you the process & the amount of different types of chemicals that go into paint. Titanium dioxide & acticide are pretty expensive. You have thickeners, binders, powders, coalescents, extenders, acticide etc. The list goes on.
Having just bought 4L thinking “that’ll be enough”, then being half a wall short and needing to get rush out and get another 4L, I definitely agree with you.
When it came to the roof, I just went to the ‘mistinted’ section in Bunnings and did the roof of my gym in antique White, rather than normal ceiling white. Mistinted paint was “only” $50 for 15L, rather than $200.
Yep, $5 won't be far off - see some UK pricing below which is still sold at a profit !
I've never understood why paint is so expensive in Australia.

Paint has to be the biggest scam in the building industry
I'd love to hear what this costs to manufacture, but my guess is, it's probably about $5 worth of chemicals
