PS5 Vs Xbox Series X, What Are You Buying?

Hello OzB community,

Interested to get everyone's thoughts about what they're leaning towards, the PS5 or Xbox?

What is it that has you leaning this way? Exclusives or brand loyalty?

I've always been Xbox myself, but starting to lean towards the PS5 as any Xbox exclusive is generally available on PC.

Had same issue with ps4 vs xbox one, and a gaming PC too. My xbox one doesn't get used much at all compared to the other two.

Hasn't this been asked before? We still don't even know the prices

  • +3

My personal choice will be PS5 as a preference because of pretty much the same reason as you said - exclusive titles.
All the big Xbox franchises seem to be heading to PC and since I have a gaming rig, no point in investing in the Series X - at least during launch.

The only reason that I may consider a Series X down the line will be for the backwards compatible titles, so if they announce some cool OG Xbox releases (a guilty pleasure of mine was Enter the Matrix back in the day) then I'm down.

    • +2

Enter the matrix, what a game! especially when you could 'Hack' the game to put in cheat codes (still one of the best ways to put cheat codes into the game), also unlocking the local multiplayer 1v1 fights.

      • +1

Try Path of Neo if you can, was much better overall IMHO

  • +3

    Halo Infinite.

Going for a PS5 launch day for sure. Coupled with PC covers majority of gaming bases.

    • BTW with XCloud running series X consoles at launch you can play series X games with gamepass ultimate on your phone, tablet or PC (running android emulator), that provides you with the gamepass/xcloud console games, also (unless sony has backflipped) you can only use your PS4 controllers to play next gen games on xbox with xcloud, as sony said ps4 controller for ps4 games only on ps5.

plus there are rumours that xbox one and PC may get xcloud apps too!

it makes sense as microsoft losses money on consoles, especially early on, and they can get the people hooked bad on gamepass ultimate and committed to xbox more.

      • you can play series X games with gamepass ultimate on your phone, tablet or PC (running android emulator)

Why on earth would you want to? PS has had remote play for years already. Not recommended.

i've always been an xbox person myself. not too bothered about the exclusive titles on PS4/PS5 as most tend to be RPG's and i'm more into multiplayer games, also i mostly play multiplatform games (not including Halo).
main reason is most of my friends play xbox and i prefer the controller.

  • +2

PS5 first because I've always preferred Sony's exclusives. The PS4 really knocked it out of the park. I personally think MS shot themselves in the foot by saying all their first party titles will be also available on the Xbox One for 2 years which will limit their XSX versions.

I will probably buy the XSX (not the gimped rumoured Xbox Series S) after 2 years. My X1X will be used in the meantime.

  • +2

I'll be getting an Xbox mainly because of their commitment to complete backwards compatibility. They're also going to go HARD this gen on first party exclusives since a lack of them bit them on the ass so hard last gen.

    • I really hope they release some awesome exclusives next-gen so they can give Sony a run for their money. Competition will be much better for all of us.

I know some games like Halo is planned to last the life of the generation (like 10 years) but I really hope they keep this down to a minimum. I cannot imagine playing the same game for such a long period of time no matter how good it may be. I have better things to do with my time.

      • WoW says hello. 15 years in with new expansion on the way…

        • Yeah not for me

    • Sony have also made this commitment, just going to roll it out over time (same way Xbox did)

      • +3

We don't know to what level though unfortunately. Sony has only said they'll be making games backwards compatible, where Xbox will be going back and adding 4k+HDR to previous titles

    • +1

Not really going to be going anywhere near as committed to first-party exclusives compared to Sony, especially when they aren't even making games exclusive to their own console (all playable on PC as well). It was quite clear from their last event that they care more about Gamepass than they do the Series X.

In terms of BC they will probably take the win, but I don't think anyone sees exclusives being an area Xbox will win (and from their business strategy it doesn't even seem to be a priority for them).

  • Probably neither for a couple of years or so at least. Already have a PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

PC should have me covered as far as Xbox goes, so I'd only get a PS5 to play the exclusives. Will be in no rush to get one as I have plenty of PS4 games still to play, and I'd rather wait for a black PS5 to release. Mainly bought the Xbox One to play some of the backwards-compatible games.

    • "wait for a black PS5"

The white outer shell is likely to be user replaceable with alternative colour/pattern shells. I think Sony have gone this way because with PS4, you are stuck with the colour/design you bought (and some limited edition look good at the time but don't age well). With PS5 you can change it up after purchase.

Expect third-party rip-offs to show up once the Chinese copy it.

      • DBrand Swarm for the win here for the white!

  • +2

Both on their respective Launch Days

  • +2

PS5, Sony keeps hammering out fantastic exclusives one after another. Ghost is my GOTY.

PS + PC is the way to go. Add Switch if you need portability and like Nintendo first parties.

    • Ghost was my GOTY until i got to Act III :(

  • Xbox, because it's so much more hardware. I was also really underwhelmed by the look of PS5 launch titles, esp. Gran Turismo. (Mind you the only Xbox launch title that wowed me was Flight Simulator, and I'm getting that on PC anyway).

Also Gamepass ultimate is a game changer, I get most of the games that I want included on PC and Xbox.

    • +1

If anything your comment just shows why one shouldn't bother with an Xbox this generation as all its games are available on PC anyways (assuming they own a capable PC)…

      • +3

Yeah sure, except sometimes I prefer to play my games on the couch with a controller. And you'd have to have a pretty powerful PC to match the new Xbox, especially because it is tailored for running games.

I've had Playstations, Xboxes and Nintendos, but with this generation, the gulf between the Xbox and the PS when the Xbox X was released was too big. It's the only current gen capable of true 4K in most games, and it's very solid machine. 4K makes a difference to me especially when I'm using a projector. I want the most graphics power available, and the best online experience. Xbox delivers this. (That being said, if all your friends are on PS, then it's going to deliver the best online experience for you).

Ps5. Already have a beast pc. Literally no reason to get xbox. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft shut down the xbox division in favour of focusing on gamepass.

    • I doing the opposite. With a Xbox I don't need a beast PC for at least 2 years. I will sell it play everything on xbox

  • +2

    Both.

  • +5

    We need a poll.

  • PS5, though not at launch as I'm not in a hurry for another console. Already have PS4, PS3, Switch, Wii U as well an as average PC. Owned a PS1 back in the day, PS2 is the only one I skipped.

I've never owned an Xbox, but it is interesting to see their strategy. With this new generation, MS seems to be positioning the XSX as more of an optimised hardware device to play PC games (considering it's desktop friendly design, I wouldn't be surprised if MS allow it to dual boot into Windows). I can see them refreshing the build more often than last gen as well. This will put pressure on Sony to keep up performance wise.

  • PS5 for sure. Not sure why you'd get an Xbox at this stage as you can play most games on PC and the exclusives on Xbox just aren't interesting to me.

    • If you don't have a PC..?

      • +1

Buy a PC and you don't need a Xbox (spent 2k++). Buy a Xbox and you don't need a PC (spent $750 lol)

        • I'm doing the eb trades in deals. I have a xbox one x and a one s. It's good having 2 xboxs as i buy one copy of a game and they can play multiplayer together. Will do a pc upgrade in a year or 2 and bonus i can use my brazil ultimate on all of them. I will play fps on pc but some games like assassins creed i prefer to play on the couch with dolby atmos

  • Nothing at launch for sure….

Really depends what you like and play most often. If you're a fan of third person action games Sony is the way to go, they've got some great exclusives. I'm really looking forward to the God of War sequel and Horizon in particular.

If you like playing multiplayer games, shooters, racers and third party games like Call of Duty etc…. go for the Series X as graphically it will be superior to the PS5, enough in some games to be the difference between 30/60fps. Playstation at this point in time doesn't have any shooter exclusives and I think I'm right in saying that for the last 10 years Forza > GT. Services such as Game Pass on Series X are far superior currently to anything PS5 offers, as well as their backwards compatibility, keyboard and mouse support etc.

Unfortunately I don't have a crystal ball and can't predict who's going to have the better exclusives over the generation which is why I'm personally waiting a year before I buy anything and I already have a PC.

    • -3

Nah forza was never better than gt except maybe 4.

  • PS5 but I'll wait until they release some special edition console. Then when the PS5 slim is inevitably released, I'll get a special edition console of that one as well.

    • You could make a PS5 fort with all those consoles! :)

  • +1

Ps5 the minute it's available, bruv!

  • +1

    PS5 of course.

  • Probably buying a PS5 with disc drive not initially, but sometime next year for the exclusives.

Will probably get an Xbox Series X too next year if it supports backwards compatibility well, as I've got a huge amount of 360 discs and that Elite 360 of mine will probably crap out at some point. Also for Fable, I'm a Fable tragic.

  • I've been a Sony fanboy since PS1 but honestly at this stage it's looking like Xbox will be my first purchase with superior backwards compatibility and game-pass.

Neither will probably be bought at launch, though.

    • How dare you change brand loyalty!!!???

I assume this is the very logical reason you were negged

  • +2

This is quickly going to devolve into people defending big corporations' products or belittling both in an attempt to feel superior by announcing your allegiance to the "PC Master Race".

Remember these are entertainment devices. Buying one early only serves to feed egos at the cost of a higher price point which will then lead to subsequent years of belittling the opposition and defending your early adoption to justify the purchase - as is any console generation.

  • I'm a PC gamer and will be for the forseeable future. I game at a desk with a headset and smaller monitor so a keyboard and mouse are more fitting for me. I'm also just a hardware enthusiast and love poking and prodding at my machine. But if I were to pick one it would be the PS5. My console friends all prefer Playstation and say they would upgrade to the PS5 (biggest reason I would buy it), and I prefer Sony's exclusives. If the XBSX is cheaper than the PS5 though it may change my opinion.

  • XSX without hesitation!

  • Halo Infinite now is been delayed to 2021.

  • I'm not looking to buy any consoles at the moment. Maybe in the future, like in 1 or 2 years.

  • +3

PS5 without a doubt in my mind. I work in the gaming industry and with the recent delay of Infinite until 2021, launch day is going to be a painful one for XB. Even with SM: Miles Morales and HZD2 around the corner, Sony already looking to flex their muscle. Not to mention securing exclusive content in upcoming games (Marvel's Avengers, COD etc.) will only help the brand grow further..

  • +2

Going PS5, as a PS exclusives appeal to me more, and the xbox one I enjoy is on PC as well.

That said I hope the xbox budget system pays off for them, I like the idea of them releasing a budget system, pairs well with the strong value of the game pass. Makes it a solid choice for families. Would be hard justifying 600/750, then with increased game costs.

  • PS5 all the way, exclusive tittles such as Sackboy, HZD, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Bloodborne, etc.

  • I have always been a PS guy but I've gone with the Series X this year. More powerful + game Pass is an excellent offering. I don't rate the PS exclusives that highly.

  • +1

I've gone for a PS5 almost by default, Sony smashed it this generation with a better console and great first party games and exclusives… but honestly right now with game pass I think a Xbox Series X is a better proposition, especially with the cheap game pass ultimate from Brazil… I think in time thought the Playstation exclusives will start to roll out and it'll most likely make it the more appealing console but time will tell.

edit: I should also point out I'm not getting a series x as i have a decent gaming laptop with Ultimate and all the free Epic games… 400+ Steam games etc

  • No option for both?

  • +2

I'd say it's not smart to buy either, at least not at launch.
PS5 is looking seriously underpowered and reports are devs are already struggling to make their games perform on the system.
Its announced lineup isn't amazing either.
XBSX is in an even worse state, the hardware looks good but everyone is dreading another generation with 0 exclusives.
A lot of what they've announced only has a CG trailer so it's hard to be excited for anything on that side either.

My honest advice to anyone would be to wait and then probably get the PS5 slim/pro.
The PS5 is too oversized for there to not be a slim model, it's too underpowered to not get a pro model and its SSD usable space is too small for larger capacities to not be coming too.
Paying $600-$750 to play a PS3 remake 1-2 years sooner doesn't make a lot of sense. And a lot of the other announced "exclusives" are coming to PS4 anyway.

Hold your cash and get the better revision.
PS5 will probably end up winning this gen again, but you don't want one of the launch dud systems.

    • Is the power gap between ps5 and series X bigger than ps4 pro and Xbox one X?

      • +1

It's actually probably about the same.
To qualify my comment I'll say this is based off both the Resident Evil 8 development (which is apparently having trouble running on PS5) as well as resolution/framerate targets of each system.

PS5 appears to be targetting 4k for real this time but only at 30fps, with 1440p@60fps for performance modes (features in Demon's Souls for example). This means that we will probably be seeing a lot of games just barely doing proper 4k and a few doing faked 4k on the PS5 side, similar to how PS4 pro had to do fake 4k a lot this gen.

In contrast the XBSX appears to really want to lock in 4k when possible. 4k @ 60 would be a big step forward but is obviously very demanding. And this could mean tradeoffs in terms of graphical detail. Halo Infinite is an example of this potentially polarizing the playerbase. They should be applauded for targetting 4k@60fps with a 1st party AAA game, but they were ridiculed for the graphics looks pretty poor compared to expectations. You also have a selection of titles targetting 120fps with the Series X for performance mode. This is pretty astonishing for a console even if they're mostly last-gen games.

Again I want to emphasize I'm not trying to fanboy and will probably never buy an xbox. I have a PC which plays 99.9% of xbox games already. I just think the XBSX is much more impressive just in terms of actual hardware. Which suggests to me that Sony will eventually fire back with a PS5 pro. The PS5 as it is right now seems almost like a prototype. It's underpowered, oversized with little storage space. If I was cynical I'd say they left that much room for improvement on purpose to sell other PS5 revisions later in the generation. But either way, I think it's a good idea to wait. A better version of the PS5 with more game available seems a lot more attractive a proposition, especially considering how expensive they've made this version at launch.

    • I'm not sure about "seriously underpowered" according to spec comparisons, series x is slightly in front for CPU and graphics https://tinyurl.com/y4h7qs4z but PS5 has faster IO throughput and larger expansion potential for the SSD - according to this site https://tinyurl.com/y5r4d3z2. PS5 also has "variable frequencies on both the CPU and GPU" which means "the PS5 performance will vary depending on how much it’s being pushed by games". So yes, this could be tricky for developers to create efficiencies but will mean the temp should stay low and the device could last longer.

      • Because it's not underpowered. People are mentioning debunked rumours about PS5 having problems with specific games like RE8.

Funny enough, these so-called rumours don't mention Series S having problems running those games even if it has almost half the GPU and RAM than PS5.

  • I had the original Xbox and loved it, stuck within them with the 360 and loved it but then the E3 they showed of the Xbox One, saw it was a disaster and decided to jump ship to PS4. My brother had a PS3 and it was awesome at the end of its life cycle so in the end I knew I made the right call.
If I had to call it now, this generation is gonna be a close one now that Microsoft has their priorities straight. However, Microsoft exclusives can be a hit or miss whereas most Sony exclusives are a hit, with a few being misses.
Personally, if I were in your shoes, maybe stick with Xbox so you can keep playing the games you have on Xbox and a few years down the line get a PS5 if you think the Series X didn’t measure up to what it was supposed to be.

  • There's no 'both' option.

Both have pros and cons. So I'm getting both. Will mostly lean XSX because of gamepass and the superior controller (for me) though. PS5 will be gaming with mates and exclusives.
