  • Wonder if anyone is going to bring up the eBay Plus deal from almost a year ago… hahah

    • +4

That was for the Samsung T5, so technically a difference product.

Specs on this one looks like Samsung now puts an NVMe SSD in this. T5…. not really NVMe.

  • These are not shuckable, right? If if remove the case, I can't do much with what's inside - it's neither SATA nor M2?

Great price but is warranty valid since it is a US model? Not that much would go wrong with an SSD
    And would OW price beat?

  • +4

is this worth it or are you better off buying a NVME and USB enclosure for slightly more?

    • +1

if you really need the extra speed then yes. I was using T5 running games on it via macbook pro, works fine. no speed issue! if you're getting NVMe and enclosure, make sure the airflow is good enough. It may get hot if you're playing games on it. For file transfers they are both ok. Get the cheapest one!

    • NVME + USB way better in value.

If you are looking at 500GB specifically, it is hard to beat this because a NVMe enclosure for USB 3.1 gen2 is roughly $40 at the moment? So, you are looking at $84 or less for a 500GB NVMe SSD.

The main advantage of an NVMe enclosure is that if you were an OZBer who over-purchased NVMe SSDs, being able to access those excess NVMe SSDs without installing it to an m.2 slot on a motherboard can be quite handy.

In terms of quality, USB 3.1 gen 2 cables do matter and Samsung would include at least decent cables. I do wonder whether Samsung used one of those standard chipsets or their own one in this.

  • Thanks. Ordered.

Samsung Global warranty AFAIK… check web-site…. I have a couple of T5's with Global warranty attached.

  • Nice units and a good update to the earlier T5's… hanging out for a sweet deal on a Samsung T7 Touch to compare with my SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD Portable (1TB) …. (nice prices on these at last see link: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07YFGSDQR/ref=ppx_yo_d…)

    EDIT - I was mistaken :P

btw I have a 500GB T5, it's pretty damn good so these should be even better.

Should be a minimum +2 better if my math be right.

  • very tempted to pull the trigger. T5 just seems to have gone out of stock everywhere.

  • I was after a t5 to “externalise” the spinning disk on a 3yo iMac and provide a much needed pfmce boost. Is a t7 just a newer model?

    • Yes and its double the speed too

        Thx

  • The T7 touch 500GB was down to $134 on ebay less with 5% ebay GC

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-500GB-T7-Touch-Portable-…

    Was $149 - 10% coupon last week

So not really a great deal for non touch model. Why is Amazon US getting so expensive, amazon.com used to be 30-40% cheaper before compared to Aussie retailers.

    • can't really say amazon US is expensive. Prices on Amazon fluctuates often.

If anyone is interested in 1TB, I picked up a 1TB T7 Touch from Officeworks today for $255.55 price matching shoppingexpress ($269). The touch has a fingerprint unlock which is pretty cool.

    https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/samsung-t7-touch-1tb-…

    • it's not cool when the interface/hardware is corrupted and you can't back up or copy the files! haha. sometimes fingerprint authentication is another problem. (ofcourse yes, more security. probably not needed).

      • There’s fingerprint or password. Or you can disable it

  • I bought one of these during one of the previous deals. It's incredibly fast (C-to-C) with my other OZB deal, the Acer Aspire 5 14-inch @$488.

You don't even see the transfer window on files unless they're quite large, and even then it only takes a few seconds!

  • Great Deal!
