You need gets your facts straight. 3rd gen Ryzen is the 3000 series, code-named Matisse, on desktop, like the 3700x. On mobile it's the 4000 series, Renoir. The 3700u is 2nd gen Ryzen, code-named Picasso. It's uses the 12nm Zen+ architecture vs 7nm of the new series. I have both and there is nothing wrong with the performance of the 3700u if you are not looking at benchmarks everyday.
The problem with your statement is you seem to be butthurt over your ownership of a 3700u. There is nothing wrong with 3000… say last year. So why would you be pushing 3000 series stuff when 4000 is here. Further would you pay $1k for 3000 series stuff now? I wouldnt.
I apologise for getting the terminology wrong, its 3rd gen for desktops but 2nd gen for laptops but why would you pay for 3000 series now that 4000 series is out and sometimes even cheaper.
There is nothing wrong with the performance of a lot of modern pc gear. The issue is you're better off buying the newest gen for similar money, today.
And Asus is not what I'd call a brand I would chance $1k on. Lenovo yes. Dell yes. HP maybe. Asus no.
I have a 2000 series laptop… Its fine. I bought it in 2018. Would I recommend it in 2020? No. But then some people like to buy older gen stuff in 2020. God knows why.

Better off with this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/557105 (marked as expired but $659) over the 2070 performs closer to the super variant, it would be a good deal if it was a Super.
Is the video card good as a replacement for GTX680. Yes that's right I haven't upgraded in 8 years lol.
May as well wait a little longer for 3000 series if you've waited that long, and also upgrade the rest of your build and monitor along with it if you haven't already.
2070 was discontinued a while back for good reason. The 2060 Super is virtually identical and much cheaper
