  • How does the GT540 do when playing BF3?

How would it do against my desktop PC with a Radeon 4670 1Gb and a Phenon II 550 @ 4GHz?

    Thanks

    • -4

      Hi xDEFiNE,
The 2nd Gen i7 Quad would be a much faster CPU, I dare say it would be almost double the speed with Intels new introduction of "dual threaded" CPU's. The i7 quad core actually recognizes 8 processors in the laptop, kind of like an Octo-core (octo-core is my own terminology though lol).

Then the Radeon 4670, 2 years ago it was great sure but the new GT540M again would just smash the 4670. If you check out the system requirements for BF3, this laptop meets and exceeds both the minimum system requirements and the recommended system requirements.

      • +1

The 540M won't "just smash the 4670": http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark…. Almost the same results, and that's just the mobile version of the 4670.

The 540M is just a mid range chip, so it's not exactly going to be fantastic for gaming. xDEFiNE, you'd be better off with an HP with 6770M if you want a gaming laptop for a similar price.

        • "…you'd be better off with an HP…"

Right there is where you made your mistake! :p

        • -1

The two scores are entirely different on notebookcheck.net, have a look again Carbon… The GT540M scored about 30-40% higher in most fields.

        • +2

StewBalls: In terms of reliability, maybe (although Acer really isn't much better), but for value for money, yes, HP is much better.

dereko: 30-40% higher in most fields? Orly? 3DMark01 is 14% better, 3DMark03 is 10% lower, 3DMark05 is 17% better, 3DMark06 is 17% better, 3DMark Vantage GPU score is 37% better. I'm not denying the 540M is better, but it's hardly a massive improvement given as you pointed out there's 2 years between them. Compare to the 6770M for instance. That's something you'll see a huge improvement with.

        • HP consumer grade laptops are rubbish; therefore any percieved 'saving' is false economy! :)

        • Acer consumer grade laptops are also rubbish, hence I don't see any advantage for this over the HP.

        • I'd take Acer over HP any day Carbon, if you had any real experience with either or both you'd have a better idea of what you were talking about! I've never seen a good DV5 or DV6 series HP, the same perennial known faults over & over! :(

I seem to recall having this very same discussion with you once before, it was as pointless then as it clearly is now! ;)

Re: HP & specs, well you can't polish a turd! Especially a turd where the issuing rectum (HP Aust) won't honour the warranty…at least Acer actually fix their mistakes in a timely fashion! :)

P.S. Please don't go pointing to that vintage SquareTrade study for reference again. I think laptops were steam powered way back when that was conducted! :p

        • I do have real experience with both. But whatever, you're right that this discussion will be just as pointless as the last. Btw, there's no point putting exclamation marks at the end of everything you say - it won't make your argument any stronger. And if you've got a more recent study that's just as comprehensive I'd love to see it. Until then, anecdotal evidence is useless.

      • "Smash"? the 4670? LOL…

Thanks carbontwelve. I'll wait for a good deal on a HP.

        • -3

As above xDEFiNE, look at the scores for yourself - the GT540M does pull in as the clear winner out of the two :|

      • @ CarbonTwelve above ^^^

Wow, if my use (or misuse) of punctuation is a major problem for you in the discussion Carbon, then you've got deeper issues bro!!! :p

If you're so experienced, you should know that buying a laptop based purely on specs is idiotic at best! Recommending a brand that a quick google search will reveal the same known faults in many iterations and a manufacturer seriously reluctant to admit or fix the issues isn't so wise either! Acer may not be perfect, but at least if (only 'if' mind you, since unlike HP I don't know of any persistent Acer issues) my professional and personal experience is that you will have your machine back to you, working perfectly, in 10-14 days couriered door to door! Try getting that from HP!!!

How's about you come up with some newer empirical evidence then mate, if it's so important to you???

Anyway, as much as I enjoy a good pointless discussion, I'm off to have a good weekend…you have one too! :D

        • I wasn't a major problem, it was a suggestion.

I'm not recommending buying purely on specs. Look at my posting history and you'll find plenty of comments saying that HP have bad reliability. Stats show that Acer are just as bad.

I don't need to bring newer empirical evidence because I'm not the one calling the existing evidence into question.

        • Problem, suggestion, deflection, whatever…again, pointless!

So why then are you recommending a brand that you yourself acknowledge is sketchy if not for the specs??? It seems you're also happy to compare anecdotal evidence ("comments") to "stats" (presumably from the old SquareTrade chestnut) to make your point, that's not good science…it's actually a pretty specious comparison in any man's language!!!

You do realise don't you, that especially with IT & any technology, the results of cross-sectional studies (and even longitudinal for that matter) can vary significantly over time for a number of reasons???

No, you don't need to bring new data, just a consistent line of argument would help! :)

        • Where am I comparing comments to stats? The reason I recommend the HP is because you can't get similar specs for anywhere near the same price range. I caveat that with the poor reliability and leave it up to the reader to decide whether he wants to take the risk.

Yes, I know results of reliability studies can vary over time, but unless there's evidence to the contrary then I'd suggest that the SquareTrade results be taken into consideration.

You want to complain about my line of arguing, how about you actually provide some evidence to counter the SquareTrade results for Acer? So far all I've seen is you complain that it's old, which does nothing to further your argument that Acer is significantly more reliable than HP.

If you want to play BF3, the cheapest way is to upgrade your desktop. You need to get a much much better laptop graphics card to get even mid range graphics performance. The 540M will be similar or worse than your desktop graphics card.

      • Lol of course, I'm not that stupid :P But I'm looking for something on-the-go too.

I'll most likely get a GTX 570 for my PC in a few weeks time. My 4670 struggles at 720p with all medium settings.

    • I think its hard to compare between desktops and laptops. You're trading mobility of your machine and performance for price imo. Personally if you don't need a laptop to run around with then stick to your desktop and upgrade a few components. For $700 you can do a lot to making your desktop wicked. I'd just change my graphics card to an ati 6850 for starters, about $170 probably cheaper if you look around.

Not a bad deal for the laptop though after cashback.

      • I was thinking a 6870 for $200, but my friends suggested that the 570 was worth the extra $150. If it's that much better, then I might grab it.

  • I've double checked, the scores don't seem that much better. Also my 4670 has 1GB of memory opposed to 512MB and the core's OC'ed to 800MHz and the memory is OC'ed to by about 50MHz (can't remember the exact clock speed)

    • -1

Yeah but the GT540M can reach as high as 2GB with the nVidia turbo technology opposed to your 1GB on the ATI card. Processing speed is faster, not a huge difference but still faster, processing capacity is double though, the two aspects combined result in you having a much faster graphics card.

If you like, come in to our store and I can actually run graphics bench mark tests on the machines in front of you (I have laptops with the 4670 GFX) and then you can literally see for yourself the graphics difference.

  • would of rather bought this acer with same specs for $670. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54124#comment although no 3 years warranty
