Sunbeam Barista Max, if you can find it. Sub $400 mark, decent reviews.

    • Not really a 'coffee maker's per se. But if you don't mind a mannual process, I can't recommend getting an Aeropress and a good budget grinder such as the Timemore C2 for a total of around $140 any higher. I can't say it's the best option because different people have different tastes and preferences, but it's probably one of the best for beginners due to its ease of use, low entry cost, and versatility.

      • It's super easy to clean
    • Depends if you want a full-blown espresso machine. If not, I would recommend using a stove-top moka pot for espresso-like brew that's fast, cheap and easy to use. Look up Bialetti for starters. ~$50.

      • +1

I have tried moka pot before, quite hard to use and inconsistent, slow to brew, and have to wait to cool to wash. Might as well get a capsule machine, even a supermarket one can do better.

  • For someone coming across from nespresso pods who enjoys a well made dark roast coffee (love travelling and trying coffee e.g in melbs) - would a breville like this be a recommended intro?

Am wary id the extra work with tamping and extracting etc. Vs popping in a coffee pod and go… so am wondering with this at least the grinder is built in? Is this an acceptable quality way of making said coffee vs a seperate dedicated grinder and espresso machine? Or are these automatic grinder machines now fully down pat and precise when you pre choose a grind setting??

Wondering if theres a machine where it can output the grind through the machine if say you wanted a different grind for use in another machine e.g. a filter machine?

Overall though is it a good foray in for a first timer.?

    • There are heaps of resources and videos on YouTube for the barista express since it's a popular model .

It does give you the flexibility to adjust according to your taste . So things like coffee ratio , grind size , coffee volume and grind amount etc.

If you don't want to fiddle around too much then you can use the pressurised basket . The grinder is good but isn't as accurate as the smart grinder pro. But for me the space savings is more important .

My missus has been dead against one of these more manual machines since forever. She was concerned about complexity (that it would be too difficult to use) and the mess. As a result, we bought a super automatic Gaggia (Saeco) coffee machine where you feed beans up top, then press one button and it does everything for you. That machine is probably a step up from a Nespresso, but it eventually died and I was able to convince her to let me buy this one. She loves it and uses it everyday.

The grinder is built in (at the top). The coffee quality in my mind is better than a Nespresso from my experience in hotels. One key benefit is the ability to steam milk (if you like your milk based coffees). It is also better (taste is deeper/richer) than my previous Gaggia Super Automatic. It isn't as good as those more dedicated machines where they have a separate grinder and boiler, however those can cost substantially more (compared to my parent's fancy Italian $2000 machine).

Nothing is as easy as a Nespresso. However compared to my last Gaggia machine, there is less mess (grind) and less to clean up. The other machine would drop the spent grind into a container built inside, but when you opened that panel, you not just had to empty the container, but also clean the automatic contraption inside. The grind would get into corners and and into the guts of this contraption, if you didn't clean it regularly (weekly) it would get moldy. This Breville is much simpler and easier to clean.

I would suggest watching some youtube videos to see for yourself what is involved.

The other benefit is that the cost per shot would be significantly less than a Nespresso…

Good luck with whatever you choose!

      • Don’t know why you comparing proper coffee with Nespresso. You can ask anyone who knows coffee won’t think that Nespresso is any tasty.

  • Got one of these $520 back in 2015 (thanks to Ozbargain). Still running great after 5 years, the steam wand gets clogged from time to time but I just clear it out with a pin. One thing I find weird is the 'Clean Me' indicator has never ever turned on, not even once!

Anyone else struggle to make latte art with it? I've been practicing 5 years and I still fail. I'm putting it down to not enough pressure in the steam wand, but I think that might just be an excuse haha. I've seen Youtube videos where people do it with this machine.

    • +1

Frothing is an art in itself, if you aren't getting super creamy froth, then you have frothed incorrectly. If the froth is like creamy silk and you still can't do latte art, then that's an artist issue.

      • Yeah I feel like my froth isn't getting the right consistency because the pressure is too low. Maybe it's just my frothing technique, I've tried all sorts of things and watched 1 million Youtube videos on it. Surely it doesn't take 5 years to learn when most random people in any cafe can do it. That's why I'm blaming the pressure haha.

I've watched them at my local and they won't even put any effort into frothing, they just sit the jug on there and walk around doing other stuff while it froths. Their machine seems to be much higher pressure though, I think that makes the froth more consistent.

        • +1

The tip of the wand should be barely making any sound, it shouldn't be in too far as to not hear any air or frothing. You don't want bubbles, but you want loads of movement, with the wand as far out as can be without making bubbles. The position changes as you stretch the milk, and you will need to monitor as you froth. The key is to notice what sound it makes, that's what the cafe peeps are listening for. I very much doubt there is an issue with pressure. You don't want high pressure as the milk will go everywhere. Remember that at the correct position, the milk should be moving around a lot, not due to the pressure but the position.

          • @onlinepred: Thanks for the tips, I do already do most this stuff, I guess I'll keep working on it!

            • @bleeder: What milk are you using? This plays a huge factor also as you probably already know

              • @onlinepred: I've tried all sorts, only full cream. Usually just generic Brownes full cream.

I find the milk either all sinks and I get nothing to work with on top, or I over-froth it and it all floats and most of the top ends up white. I can never get a nice consistent medium. I'd love to grab the jug off them at the cafe and give it with a shot with the way they froth it so I can find out if it's my frothing or pouring technique. I'm aware the way you pour does also dictate whether it syncs or floats.

                • @bleeder: If the milk if frothed correctly, it will simply pour in and start building up the top layer slowly. If it's too bubbly (too much air) or if the milk isn't fresh it will just go everywhere basically.

          • +1

@onlinepred: Pressure does matter. If pressure is weak, it's not going to move the milk around as well. Making microfoam is easy enough on any machine, but on machines with weak pressure, incorporating those microfoam into the rest of the milk is a lot harder compared to more expensive machines with strong steam.

            @bleeder

What size milk pitcher are you using? I would suggest using a small sized pitcher instead of big 600ml ones. You will only make things harder for yourself with a large size pitcher.

    • One thing I find weird is the 'Clean Me' indicator has never ever turned on, not even once!

I've had mine for about 4 months, the clean me indicator just came on last week for me!

    • Get a milk temp wand, no more than 65 degrees, and use the fatty milk. Or get a lesson from the local cafe :) You are frothing it too long with too much air getting into it.

      • I feel like if anything I am not getting enough air and it just sinks. I do try to keep the tip near the surface of the milk. I haven't thought about the temp wand, sounds like a good idea, I might do that! A lot of the time I with froth for ages but the milk still isn't hot enough, especially if I use a larger jug.

    • One more tip in addition to the great ones here -
If you're consistently getting a really separated foam, try a secondary jug - pouring some of the milk out quickly into the secondary jug, and then using that silkier milk to make the latte art.
Another tip is start small - get a small semi-hemispherical cup (classic coffee cup about 150-200ml) and make a shot in each, then try pouring. You can see how a shorter distance with a quick pour might effect the crema, and how pouring speeds effects the art.

If nothing else works, find a friend with a machine and try making it on theirs to see if it's any better! Taking your milk all the way to 60+ °C is common in cafes these days.

      • Oooh I like these tips, will definitely give ithem a go, cheers!

I've ordered a clip on thermometer for my jug last week so will so how that goes too

  • is this thing pickup only?

I have been trying to get it delivered in melb…

    • +1

Buy it, they will send it for free. I had mine like that today. You need to call them after purchase

  • +1

not bad with the 3 pc with shopback down to 610

  • I have the BES920 with the smart grinder duo but just want to chime in to say that my coffee purchases from cafes have dropped about 90% since purchasing the duo. Once you dial in your machine and grinder you will almost never want to risk having your coffee prepared by another random barista ever again.

Testing out coffee beans from different roasters is an adventure in itself!

    • Likewise, ever since having my own machine, I have virtually stopped buying coffee outside.

I buy 500g Campos Superior Blend from Woolworths, it's convenient, usually fresh (2 to 3 weeks).

  • +1

I'm in the boat for a new coffee machine soon as my Sunbeam 6910, while still chugging along ok, is getting a little clunky.

I believe the BES920 is one of the better machines out there? I only prep one coffee at a time and I already have a smart grinder so perhaps I'm better waiting for the BES920 rather than this? Can anyone advise? Thanks.

    • +1

get the bes920 only, use the rest of the cash to get a mazzer grinder off ebay or through cashies.

    • If you already have a separate grinder, just get the dual boiler. It has a 58mm group head, allowing more water to penetrate shallower grinds, which is supposed to achieve better extract. The machine also has a timer so you can pre-heat in the morning. You can also top up water from the front.

  • +1

I have the dual boiler model with the separate grinder. Love the dual boiler, going strong after hammering it for 2 years now, at 2-4 coffees a day. However the grinder packed it in after 14 months. Had to turf the whole grinder. Why, well the part that went, which was crucial to the grinder, was plastic! It should not be made of plastic but metal, solid metal. And it is a non-replaceable part! Consequently, I believe it is a manufacturing design by breville so these things are kaput in 2 to 3 years.

    • and the part would prob be the same with the models with the built in grinder. so just beware.

      • I know right, certain manufacturers use plastic gears in oil pumps, it's quite common people replace them with aftermarket metal gears. But then you got ask who in their right mind would design high wear components using plastic. :D

        • who in their right mind would design high wear components using plastic

Might be the sales dept. Look up planned obsolescence.

  • This machine is the best. I am useless in the kitchen and even I can make an awesome coffee thanks to this. 2 years and going. Love it!

  • Lasted me 5 years so far, I use it everyday.

Get fresh local roasted beans, and good full cream milk or the "gold" versions of milk. You will not look back.

  • What's everyone's golden ratio?

18g in 36g out in 25-30 secs and timing once coffee drips into the cup?

I've noticed to achieve this the pressure dial goes all the way to the end yet some people say in needs to be roughly in the 12 o'clock position.

    What's everyone's thoughts?

    • Mine is roughly the same, 20g in 40g out in 25-30 secs.

I find that the pressure dial needs to be just a bit past 12 o'clock position to get a nice thick flow & crema.

      • How are you getting 25-30 secs brew time just past the 12 o'clock position? Anything I brew for that time is always right at the end of pressure dial.

        • Hhhmm might just be my beans, i've been using the same beans for the past 2 months so i've basically perfected every variable. are you using the double unpressurised basket?

          • @MJ90s: Wow now my next question the same beans for the past 2 months! wow aren't they stale by now? Yep, double shot unpressurised basket.

            • @ekto: hahaha by the same beans, i mean from the same roastery, i normally go through 500grams of beans in 2 weeks, so i have been re-stocking with the same beans each fortnight for the past 2 months. I feel like sometimes the pressue dial is not the most accurate, if your shot is thick, honey-like then you're good. I've heard Barista Express machines are all a little bit different.

  • Does anyone know what Costco is charging for the BARISTA TOUCH ?
Can't bring myself to pay over $1400 when they were less than 1k a few months ago.

    • Price has gone up to $1,300. It was regularly $1,100 and down to $950 just before mother's day, but it did not qualify for the free coffee and accessories promotion.

    • +1

Prices for Breville coffee machines have been permanently increased (or will be soon). If you can snag one now, I would.
Barista Pro is going up to over $1000.

      Source: Friend works for Breville.

  • Edit 3: Free khapra beetles if ordering from Canberra stores.

  • Black one not in store close to me, silver one doesn't have discount, only $100 store credit. Called nearest shop they only can sell for $660 in store (without store credit). I guess in store credit is better deal if I can find what to use it for :)

  • great deal but I already own the smart grinder with the Breville duo temp pro expresso model we got as a gift.

trying to find deals for the BES920, would you guys say this is the best bang for buck model at this price range?

  • Can the $100 In-Store Credit be used in ANY store? or only with the store we pick up the order? Cause mine pick up store is quite far (no stock for the close store). Thanks

  • Choice.com.au rates the BES870 as equal second best with the significantly cheaper Sunbeam Mini Barista Espresso Machine EM4300. Any thoughts about whether the EM4300 is better value for money?

    • TLDNR: If you have the space, buy the sunbeam em4300 and a decent grinder.

Would not rely on those affiliate review sites too much.

Bear in mind, I believe, that those review sites get paid by you clicking the link to the purchasing site when buying the product. It's always in their interest to have more positive reviews on mainstream products, that way they can earn more and better affiliate commission that way by reviewing the products more people buy.

And choice is also membership too.

I was considering the EM4300 too but bought the Breville as we have limited powerpoint space in the kitchen as it has the built in grinder which is less trash.

The grinder is often more important. The breville grinder in the BES870 will probably break and you will be stuck with an oversized expresso machine.

If space wasn't an issue, get the EM4300 and search around for a decent grinder. The breville grinder I've found is inconsistent AF. I bought it purely because of convenience.

Once you work out how to do proper expresso, upgrade later on to a gaggia.

      • Honestly confused, are you complaining about the Breville grinder here? When you say the built-in grinder is less "trash," are you talking about less waste produced?

        • +1

All built in grinders are pretty crap. The one on the breville is not THAT bad.

If you have the space, get a separate grinder, it will probably cost you a bit more, but least later on you can just upgrade the coffee machine and keep the grinder.

Anything inbuilt is normally pretty crappy.

  • Brilliant machine. Highly recommend!

  • oh ffs. got it from costco 2 weeks ago for $699 as no one had it on special back then. guess the covid panic has settled down and people have stopped panic coffee shopping in melb.

    • return it. costco has good return policy.

  • Love my BES980. Had it 4 years. Never missed a beat.

  • I really want the black. It looks so good. Why is there always a price difference to get good colours

    • I thought black is cheaper version? At least they TGG had discount on black, but not silver.

We bought silver, so far me and my wife both think that coffee using moka pot on the stove tastes better, but we still learning the machine and coffee beans are not the best (from Aldi/Coles). Checked some youtube videos about dialing in, proper pressure etc. so more or less understand the process, hopefully fresh beans makes big difference.

  • any of you guys recieved the $100 store credit yet?
