VR Headsets to Be Used as 2nd Monitor?

Im looking for a fhd or higher resolution headset that can be hooked up to a laptop or gaming console to be used as a second monitor. i enjoyed watching movies and playing games on a virtual big screen with a psvr so id like to purchase one for myself, but its resolution isnt the best. its 960x1080 per eye and quite grainy when it came to fine details. a higher res headset with the same hdmi versatility is something id really like so i was wondering if anyone here had come across something like that.

There's really only two "affordable" choices right now, due to the pandemic. Rift S or Quest.

The Oculus Quest is an all-in-one unit with built in Snapdragon CPU, is battery powered and you can also stream your desktop wirelessly to the quest without any cables, so it's highly recommended over the Rift.

The Rift only works when connected via DisplayPort and USB 3.0, it cannot do HDMI

Windows Mixed Reality is pretty much out of stock and it's not like it's actually any cheaper, the HP Reverb (1st gen) is $600 and so is the Quest.

Also the PS4 only supports Sony PSVR, it's not compatible with anything else.

it is! you can use any hdmi cable and itll load up on the virtual screen. ive played regular xbox, pc + ps4 games & ive watched movies when ive linked it up to my laptop.

im interested in purchasing my own but the resolution just wasnt what i wanted. fhd in each eye would have been sublime.

its nto a vr headset i really care about, its the virtual screen.

      • Interesting, I thought VR headsets needed special drivers to work. I guess you don't really need the 6DOF tracking at all?

You could look on eBay or gumtree and look for used vr headsets, specifically Windows Mixed Reality ones. Example

AFAIK they all mostly have the same resolution, 1440 x 1440 per eye or in the case of the Samsung Odyssey Plus it's slightly higher at 1440 x 1600 per eye

I had a Lenovo Explorer HMD and it was on "okay" vr headset, the sweet spot for the lenses is pretty small so it was terrible for gaming, and frequently became out of focus because of the poor headband design, and the face interface foam was also subpar.
Will be fine just for sitting and watching videos.

        • The Samsung HMD has the same issue as the Lenovo.

I'm not sure why you think having half the visible area of the headset blurred because of poor lenses is acceptable for videos.

          • @Diji1: I used my VR headset for cardio (beat saber and boxing games) so there's a constant need to reposition the headset if it comes loose

If you are sitting down and staying still, it'll be in / stay focus and you won't have to constantly adjust the fit and tightness of the headband.

Op's use case is very basic, just sitting down with mouse and keyboard means they don't have to spend $600+ on a 'decent' headset with good optics / controller tracking when a $200 used WMR headset from the previous generation can do the job.

        • thanks for your suggestions, unfortunately none of them work with the same versatility as psvr.

  • PSVR is like sitting inches away from a huge 720p monitor. If you were fine with that, why not just buy a huge 1080p TV.

very true, if only i could find one that was 1080p
