Note: Coming from Amazon US,

I picked one of these up last month and haven't been playing anything else (stopped playing Call of Duty for Beatsaber and HL Alyx!)

Probably cheaper because of new version coming out later in the year I guess. But this is really good nonetheless!

The rift S is also cheaper

Just make a burner account I guess. But that is a dumb change imo.

      • +33

Yeah. I have no interest in FB. Now I no longer have an interest in oculus headsets.

      • +19

They ban fake accounts. Good luck risk spending $$$ on games only to have the door slammed in your face one day.

        • +1

It's not a fake account. It's a valid account opened for the oculus. You open a gmail account named oculus234332gamil.com and open a facebook account with the name john oculus. Done. Let them close a couple of account and lose the $$$ and ACCC will do the same as with Steam return policy.
Not sure why everyone is doing a big deal about the fb account. It's just a common login. Facebook won't risk the backlash of closing account that have purchases attached.

          • +1

@SrMoure: That is a fake account. You're using an alias. I'm sure the ACCC will be pleased after you tell them you've used an alternative account that violates Facebook tos and they tell you where to go. This is a big deal because Facebook actually bans fake accounts and there's no way around it. They are definitely losing money with a certain group with this move but obviously they must know something more than us right?

    • +4

Make simple account with no friends or sensitive info

      • +15

        Done….. oh. Sad… 🙁

        • +3

Sad? With an empty account you can finally have that peace and quiet!

          • +1

@dbmitch: He/she means that they already had an account that met the criteria.

      • +4

So you mean I can use my real account?

    • +1

Existing users exempt til 2023 I think? I'll jump ship then.

    • +3

Hopefully there's enough backlash to rescind the decision

      • +2

Let's not forget that this is Facebook we're talking about here.

  • Pretty good price almost purchased yesterday but a word of caution, have read online that oculus don't honour warranty in Australia. Amazon terms:

Manufacturer warranties may not apply in Australia and manufacturer service options may not be available in Australia, but you may have other rights under law. You are responsible for reviewing available product information to ensure that the International Product you are purchasing meets your needs and expectations.

Just concerned this is the sort of device that may need warranty. Fingers crossed for Amazon au to have stock soon.

    • Manufacturer warranties are usually regional. It's highly unlikely for a US product to have its manufacturer warranty honoured by any company.

    • +6

It's sold by Amazon AU so they have to stat warranty which I would suggest 2 years at this price point

        • +18

No, it's not incorrect at all. It's sold TO Australians so it is covered by ACL. Amazon can't escape their legal responsibilities with this disclaimer. You need to find a clue and stop spreading nonsense.

          • +7

@Krogers: Yeah, it's like how valve claimed that they didnt officially sell to Australians so they didn't have to give refunds. They got a huge fine from the accc for that one. If they sell to aussies then they are bound by australian law

            • +6

@[Deactivated]: Not to mention Amazon AU domain is owned by Amazon Australia so theres not even a chance of them worming out of ACL

              amazon.com.au
Registrant: Amazon Corporate Services Pty Ltd
              Registrant ID: ACN 082 931 600

        • +4

There's a reason why Amazon AU has the line

but you may have other rights under law

          • +3

@camshandez: All good points happy to be proven wrong. Now whether to buy or wait?

            • @Captain Hindsight: There is a new model coming at the FB event later this year. We don't know if it is a more powerful model with better screens, or a cheaper cut-down model.

The existing one does work tethered as a HMD for your PC, so you can play all the PC titles as well, so it would still be useful even if there is a newer model that leaves this one behind.

I'm holding off though to see the new model, and hoping it will have a bit better screens, refresh and more up to date snapdragon on board.

            • +1

@Captain Hindsight: Yeah, I was sceptical only last week on buying some RAM from Amazon UK, but had a mate point out that line in the terms, stating that's their way of not really pointing out they're still required to handle warranty.

Shouldn't have to be so hard, but I guess if they can make you believe they won't give any help, then you'll never ask for it

        • +2

They say this as most people will read that and not even bother to claim.

    • +1

can confirm. i had a samsung odyssey+ that the right eye screen one day died and contacted amazon about it, they said go to the manufacturer to sort it out then i went to samsung usa and they said samsung australia should be able to help you out so i contacted them and they said they cant help me because its not an australian delivered product.

tl;dr. dont buy expensive shit from amazon usa.

      • +8

Amazon AU can not refer you to manufacturer legally, they have to deal with the warranty.Only reason you did not get warranty is because you do not understand the rights afforded to you in Australia as a customer of Amazon.Escalation with Amazon was your next move then a complaint with the AAAC if that did not work out.

      • +6

I had similar shit, contacted consumer affairs and they forced Amazon to sort it out as it was purchased via Amazon Australia, even though it was delivered by Amazon USA.

        • -1

I would try but even though i bought in November they said its warranty went out in July which is complete bullshit, i honestly will never buy anything Samsung or Amazon related ever again, worst experience ever.

          • @HKS: Instead of getting angry and letting companies screw you over just read through this
            https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

Email support, tell them the consumer guarantees apply regardless of any warranties suppliers sell or give to you and apply for a reasonable time depending on the nature of the goods or services and the retailer can’t refuse to help you by sending you to the manufacturer or importer.

Products must be of acceptable quality, that is:
            safe, lasting, with no faults
            look acceptable
do all the things someone would normally expect them to do.

and request a refund or replacement as something of that price failing after 9 months is not reasonable. If they say no follow it up with the options accc give you on page above.

      • +7

I told Amazon support that I didn't get any response from manufacturer so they just told me to send the item back and gave me the full refund (including postage fees)

      • I had a similar experience but with the B&H sale around Christmas last year. Worked for 30mins then went black. Got the run-around between Samsung Australian and America and never had it resolved. Put it down to a life lesson.

        • +1

basically what i experienced. life lesson indeed.

  • Keep in mind this is amazon us via au, so delivery will take a while. I just ordered my rift s through Amazon and fastway lost it at their depot so it took almost just as long anyway. Replacement came a couple days later however and Amazon (AU) support was excellent.

    • +8

      Fastway is the worst.

      • +2

From the 6 other times I've used them the items have arrived before the scheduled time so I was pretty happy with them. Losing a $600+ item however is really annoying though. When my one arrived ( via auspost) the packaging appeared to have been tampered with (amazon tape cut and reattached) however nothing was missing.

      • They always delivery after the guarantee date for me so that's some easy credit

      • fastway have changed their name to Aramex btw.

    • +6

      "lost it" … Fastway …

    • +1

I swear Fastway franchisees are only in the business to steal parcels..

    • +8

Fastway courier dropped a large amazon box (pressure cooker) on my front porch, and it was stolen, even though I was home the whole time, no ringing, no knocking. Amazon sent out a replacement using Australia Post, as I requested.

Amazon is good, Fastway, very bad. I've had many bad experiences with them.

      • Is there any way to tell if something has been sent via FastWay when it was supposed to be auspost? Like the tracking code changes or something?

I think I'm currently going through shenanigans for a interstate package, it was due last Wednesday but the tracking went from updated to delayed and now nothing is updating about it… And it's been 7 business days.

All my Amazon stuff has come (annoyingly they split all the packages up instead of 1 large box but whatever).

  • New to the VR stuff…

If you have a high end gaming pc would you go Rift S?

    • +2

I was on the fence for a while but decided the quest + remote desktop to get PCVR was worth the risk. It feels amazing being wireless! (For reference, I've only played PSVR previously)

    • +4

I just got the rift s and its amazing. You could always get a quest link cable to use your computer to power the quest. The rift s Is a bit more comfortable from reviews I've seen. Being wireless is really nice but if your wanting to play half life alyx or boneworks you'll be tethered anyway. I personally went with the rift s and have no regrets.

      • I thought you can still play PC VR games wirelessly, no? Or too laggy?

        • I think you need an add-on to do wireless.

        • +2

I use Virtual Desktop to play PCVR wirelessly on the Oculus Quest.

Lag is about 25ms and can be noticeable sometimes but provided you have good 5ghz wi-fi it's not too bad.

I started playing Half Life: Alyx via Link cable until I quickly got annoyed by the cable, so I ditched it and went wireless with VD for the remainder. Much better experience.

I mostly play Assetto Corsa though. For this I use the cable as you're seated anyway.

        • +3

Have a Quest and don't even own a link cable. Always use wireless to the PC. No noticeable lag in anything I play.

        • I went with the Quest for the option of going wired or wireless, didn't want to always being tethered.

Can play wirelessly using Virtual Desktop (paid) or ALVR (free). I have used both, the paid option is more seemless but the free version works, you need to install software on the desktop for both. ALVR requires a bit more tinkering on the PC, often each time you use it. VD just works, don't have to touch the computer at all. I have a good 5ghz WiFi about 2m from my play area, but I notice the lag when playing Beatsaber at higher difficulty.

Using a 5m Fasgear USB cable off Amazon to connect to the PC is much better re lag, cable gets annoying though. I'll probably rig up something to hold the cable from the ceiling later on which should help.

I haven't used any of the Rifts but I hear the Quest is a lot heavier. That the weight is in the front sitting on your face so it can get uncomfortable real quick, you can attach a battery to the back of the headstrap to help balance things out, there are lots of options to do this. I went with a 3D printed one that works quite well.

Best thing I bought during COVID, get exercise without going outside and have fun doing it.

          • +1

@Sike O: Thanks for the detailed post! I was thinking to grab one to help with iso blues but ended up getting an indoor bike trainer and Zwift instead. I've always liked riding bikes but this takes it to a whole new level

      • I have the Rift S, my friend on the other side of town has the quest. Really wish I had bought the quest, I like it just as much for seated PC play, but the standalone stuff is so much fun.

    • +1

I personally use a HTC Vive with the wireless adapter and it's awesome.
Fairly sure the Valve Index is the way to go on PC, but wireless is a must have once you try it, and the Index is hard to get in Aus.

      • +1

It's also more than double the price of the rift s and getting it into Aus will bring it to around triple the price.

      • +1

It seems the valve index isn't designed to last. There were quite a few reports of it breaking despite careful usage online.

I am going to wait another few years so they can iron this stuff out first. Like buying an iPhone 6 vs an iPhone 3.

    • -1

I bought a Rift S and love it.

Quest would be good because of the HDMI input.

However, it's a heavy bulky thing.

    • Yeah, probably. Quest is cool but Rift S is the most comfortable of the two and PCVR games look and run better.

      • How do PC games run better on the Rift S, they run on the same PC.

        • Quest compresses video and streams to the headset. In some cases you get compression artifacts. Rift S on the other hand directly outputs video. I probably shouldn't have said "run" better.

    • +1

To make your decision harder, you can get the link cable for the quest to run Steam and PC VR games on the Oculus Quest.

      • I'm leaning it now, but probably gonna wait till the potentially new model I think…

    • +2

      I personally wouldn't.

      Cons with the Rift S:
80Hz screen when most are 90Hz (Index goes up to 144Hz)
      Bad in-built audio
Fixed IPD (Set to around 64)
      Slightly smaller FOV
      (Facebook account required)

The problem is, we're not really spoilt for choice in Australia.

Fortunately, if I was buying a headset now, I would be looking at the HP Reverb G2 which comes out later this year.

      https://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Offer.aspx?p…

Currently looking like it will cost $1100AUD. There's a comparison table half way down the page that seems accurate to my eyes.

Of note is the resolution: "2160x2160 per eye" vs "1280x1440 per eye"

What makes this better than the Reverb G1 currently available for sale?

      • IPD Adjustment (60-68)
      • Lenses and audio in partnership with Valve (in fact the audio is straight from the index) - significantly better clarity and audio than the previous G1 (and apparently better than almost any other available consumer headset)
      • 2 additional tracking cameras for the controllers

      Cons of G2
      - Controllers don't have any finger tracking
      - Controller tracking isn't as good as Index/Vive Pro/Original Vive and is slightly behind Rift S (but is better than Cosmos) - but supposedly still passable

That said, it's not actually out yet. The impressions above are from pre-production units that youtubers have.

  • +1

There's 30gb worth of games floating in the high seas for this.

    • There's way more than that. I won't risk it though as I don't wanna lost the few hundred $$ of games I've bought.

      • If you're going to be buying games you may as well purchase the Index due to rip off Oculus Store prices compared to Steam. You will probably pay more overall while having a inferior HMD by buying the Oculus if you purchase ten to twenty games.

        • Can't you just use this with Steam anyway?

          • +3

@scuderiarmani: You can indeed. Wirelessly too.
I own most of the big games on SteamVR, I just buy some on the Quest so I can play them stand-alone.

  • +3

Love this headset, do yourself a favour and download Unity and watch some YouTube videos on making your own games ( I like a French dude called Valem).

Tip- get a magnet detachable usb 3 cable for developing so you can build, then quickly disconnect for testing.

    • +1

I've been tinkering with Unity a bit and love it. I also have a Rift and recently shared this Star Wars themed flight sim for fun - https://eggman28.itch.io/star-wars-flight-sim

If anyone has a flight stick / game controller and is interested in trying it, you can download it from that link.

I also have a build version that works with my Rift and it takes a strong stomach but way more immersive than just a 2D flat screen experience.
If anyone is interested in trying the Rift version out, feel free to comment on that page and I can look to sharing that version as well.

      • +1

Haha I love it, but you went against the direction of the arrows 😂

  • How do these go with folks who wear glasses. I have a PSVR and my glasses were rubbing on the lense leaving a mark on it.

    • +1

They have a glasses spacer attachment thats pretty good. I use it.. no issue!

      • I got a friend to 3D print these, got lenses off Zenni, now I don't need to wear my glasses when playing. You can buy commercial versions of this as well.

    • I just bought magnetic lenses inserts so that I can play without using glasses. Being magnetic I can just yoink them off to pass to others.

  • My delivery was quick but admittedly it was before all this COVID19 debacle really took hold of the world. Ordered my Oculus on 10/02/2020 and received 13/02/2020 via FedEx (shipped from Hong Kong). I've had no issue with the headset. …..and its's absolutely AWESOME!!!

  • +3

Don’t buyyyyy new quest coming next month.

    • Yeah, this is my thought exactly.

Crossing fingers the new version includes a DisplayPort cable, given they haven't been showing much love to the Rift S I think there is a good chance they'll merge the two. At least then you will have less problems with compression artifacts and latency (complaints I've heard about the Quest plus oculus link).

Would also be great if they increase the framerate as well.

    • +1

Yeah, but it wont be this price

      • Yeah but old one will still likely to be cheap. If new one doesn’t offer a solid improvement then just jump on the old one.

        • That would seem like a plan, but i reckon they would try and exhaust all old stock before the new one comes in

          • @jackwoz: what new features on the new one vs this old one?

            • +1

@Blitzfx: Absolutely no idea, from a quick read of rumors its expected to be 10% small and lighter, dual microphones, upgraded CPU, more ram, larger battery.

  • +1

I'm bordering pulling the trigger, but now worried about non local and if a new model is coming…. Uggghhh

  • I bought 128GB version for $799 because it was delivered by Amazon AU. Extra GB / Amazon AU / availability made the price difference worth it for me.

If the Oculus Quest 2 is amazing, can also sell the original Quest and upgrade.

    • I think I grabbed mine for $719 really early on, then even managed to get TRS on it haha. Been sitting mostly neglected though for the better part of a year… :S

  • -1

Don't buy. Get HP Reverb G2 for the launch price of $1100 or wait for it to discount to $1000. 2x better visuals, a tiny bit worse tracking, significantly better audio solution, and no facebook tracking :). I got it for $779 through a pricing error, but I would gladly pay $1100 for it.

    • +5

This is a completely different product, its $400 cheaper and doesn't need a PC to run it. The HP Reverb G2 hasn't been release yet anywhere and an Australian price hasn't been announced as far as I know.

      • Oh yeah true, I forgot this can be ran without a pc. In that case yeah go for this if you don't have a pc, let alone a really good one to push the G2.

        • and don't forget Quest can be wireless with PC as well.

Reverb G2 will need a powerful pc to run.

      • The price actually went up for preorder for $1400. Then they took it down again. Anyone that preordered got a phone call and was told the price would likely be $1100.

Additionally, they received a further ~$300 discount off the $1100 for the inconvenience.

You can search reddit.com/r/HPReverb for details.

  • +1

These were going for $1000+ during lockdown 1.0. So glad I have mine to get me out of the chair a few times a day.

    • I got mine in April off Amazon for $649.

  • Is this ready to play for HL Alyx?

    • nope. Alyx is steamvr only so you'll need to buy a oculus link cable or get remote desktop to play it which both cost $$.
Quest also has some drawbacks such as comfort and weight distribution so fixing these things if they bother you will also cost some money.

If you're exclusively playing PCVR games just get the rift s. Plug and play, more comfortable and better visuals.

      • Maybe my neck is stronger than those who have been complaining about comfort? I find it fine, and I play 1-2 hours at a time :P I have a gaming PC and have been playing HL Alyx wirelessly via remote desktop (PC and Quest is wifi 5Ghz). 5 hours in Alyx, there has been 2-3 times where the game glitched for 1 second (I think from my wife streaming Netflix). I don't have any regrets buying the Quest! And I don't think I can go wired after experiencing it.

        • I don't have one personally but I hear a lot about it being uncomfortable and front-heavy.
I would just personally recommend the rift s to phr0 over the Quest as he asked if it was ready to play HL Alyx which it is not.

          • @Creamy: The Quest is front heavy but I added a battery pack to the back and that works well and gives it more runtime. Cables hanging from roof hooks and elastic are still a pain and using the Quest without a cable is a far better and uninterrupted experience. I'm happy with the Quest.
