Got your money's worth out of that CRT..!!!!

  • Just rebuild the crt.

Under the back, remove the rainbows, put it back together and vac it down again. Good as new.

          • @brendanm: I still have a box full of rainbows I removed from CRTs back in the day…

Hi ilove, looking forward to your next post!. Ta.

    • next post: how do I recover data from my floppy?

      • love floppy. and vhs.

  • Put the old 7 logo on screen and everything will be all right again.

  • Did you swirl magnets around the screen too?

    • ?no idea how i got it. maybe i forgot to turn it off…

      • what model CRT is it? Anyways I went with a Hisense series 7 65P7 which was pretty good bang for buck at them time. My main gripe with it is that you can't easily stream to it from Windows. Other than that it's been a great tv.

It's possible you got too close to the screen with a strong permanent magnet (loudspeaker, motor etc.), which messed up the alignment of the electron guns. As stated above, a degaussing wand will fix it, but I don't know if you want to buy one just for a single repair on ancient technology. I'm sure the local TV repair guy has one, but they will probably charge you more than that or what the TV is worth.

Depending on how bad it is, it might actually fix itself over time. CRTs have a degaussing coil around the tube, which is activated when you turn it on (you should hear a deep electromagnet sound for a couple of seconds and crackling of static). It's not as powerful as a handheld wand, and it may not work as effectively until the set has rested and cooled a bit before turning it on again, but multiple on-off cycles should slowly fix the problem without having to buy anything.

  • https://www.rtings.com/tv has very useful and basically scientific-level reviews. Just make sure that the model you are interested in is available in Australia, as that isn't always the case :)

  • It’s 2020, get a nice 80” lcd flat screen

  • CRTs are great for retro gaming! Before you degauss it just check around for speakers and power supplies. The magnetic field range can be quite high so if you have a speaker nearby just try rotating it to see if the rainbow changes at all.

    • maybe i can live with the colour burn ins. i like my new akai set top box… triplej and radio and channels…

  • Have you tried turning it off and then on?

Does it have a degaussing circuit ?

    • idk

  • I think i might of did something

What do you think you might have done?

Unplug the TV power cord from the wall overnight, then plug it back in tomorrow morning and turn the TV on. If that doesn't fix it, try it again the next night.

    • turn the tv off when it was screen showing something? idk. maybe it's the tv…

      • TV is now fixed! hooray!

        • The rainbow swirls were caused by something magnetic or electrical coming too near the screen, maybe something as simple as speaker.

When you disconnect the power from the TV and leave it off for a while, the next time you turn the set on, internal circuitry will try to remove any magnetic disturbances inside the picture tube. This is called degaussing, and often doesn't happen automatically if you leave the set plugged in. endotherm explained it pretty well above.

  • I'm so thankful to have this CRT
