For $10 you can add a cushion on top and it could be a seat.

    • +5

      I'm already doing that now

      • +6

ha ha, come back here and upload your pic :)

    • wow…

  • that is really cheap, at that price, that are practically giving them away

  • +36

I can finally build me that "tv wall" which they used to have in tv shows (in lieu of large screens which did not exist yet)

  • +3

Awesome - i need a new anchor for my tinny!

  • +5

I was going to go and grab one just for fun, but remembered those things were so heavyyy. =(

    • -3

at those sizes they wouldnt be

  • +1

How much is copper? Maybe you can buy it and resell the copper inside??

    • +18

Why would you even bother? What I was going to do is buy one and donate it to charity. =)

      • +24

Charity doesn't want technology rubbish…..no one wants technology rubbish…that's why they're $10 each! They should pay you $10 to take one away. I won't neg (but I should!!)

        • +3

The one charity in Blackburn that I have been donating to does still accept CRT TVs. And remember, they are TVs; you can watch tv, dvds, play wii, ps2 on them. They can do the same basic jobs as today's LCD, LEDs. =)

        • +6

In the ACT it costs more than $10 to take a CRT TV/Monitor to the rubbish tip (its either $15 or 25)

        • +2

They also work with traditional 3D media :P So you can have yourself a 3D TV and get everyone to ooh and ahh until they actually come over lol :P

        • @TScott - Which charity in Blackburn (VIC) takes them?

        • +2

@daydream- It is EASTERN Emergency Relief Network. They have a warehouse you can drop off donations at Factory 1, 10-12 Thornton Cres, MITCHAM, VIC, 3132. I am sure the many in need right now would appreciate donations of electronics, household objects, blankets, pillows of any kind. =)

      • +5

yea… op shops in my area have signs saying they dont want these types of tv's.

Not that its a bad deal…

  • +1

Worth buying just to throw in the trash and hear the explosion.

    • +15

fun if you're 12yo, but otherwise socially irresponsible.

      • Yeah, but still fun.

      • +2

That's where Big W will be taking them anyway.

  • +1

Great TV's. I've had a 51cm for years and years, still works perfectly with a set top box. One great little feature is having independent volume control for each station, especially useful for switching between TV and DVD/BD.

  • +2

MADNESS. where did they dig out these old stock?

    • +1

probably someone used to work in their warehouse..forgot to put them on the system!

I said "used to work", you get the meaning! ;-)

  • +44

Awesome…time to upgrade my old Black and White TV.

    • +6

Black and white TV? I bet you're using new fangled transistors! Why, my TV still uses vacuum tubes and needs a minute to heat up. Time to upgrade!

      • +4

Awesome - time to update my ……. radio?

        • Awesome……..time to upgrade my camera + kodak films :D

do you know how much troubles to take picssss & fast flip + watch it like a movie?
only troubles is: Kodak has gone bankruptcy as I heard..(having troubles finding Kodak films)

          thanks OP!!!!!!!!!

      Lol CRT = Shitbox

  • +1

Wow, awesome price, too bad i dont need one

  • Pretty good antique investment.

  • +7

I saw countless CRT TVs being thrown out on the nature strip - free to anyone who wanted a one.

    • +2

On the way to work this morning I saw people putting out stuff on the nature strip. Among it all was a massive rear projection 80cm+ screen. Coming home all the stuff they had put out had been taken…except the massive TV.
7yrs ago my 80cm Sony CRT cost me $3600. Last year I gave it to my sister and she ended up selling it on ebay for $8.
Summary…no one wants these! BigW should of made this deal years ago.

  • +1

HOW EVEN? ZOMMMGG MUST GET TO BIGW RIGHT NOW!

    • +15

Starting to suspect being an engineering professor doesn't pay too well… jk ;)

      • +5

Many experiments I want to do with 10 TVs.

      • +2

        lol muchly

  • worth it for a second tele out in the shed or under the patio. 34cm is perhaps a bit small though!

    • Keep one in the garage and one in the laundry, dad did this during the tennis.

      • my grandad did that in the war.

No, hang on, he was protecting communists

    • +18

The TVs have already been made (probably years ago). Whether they get used and then thrown away, or thrown away right now, the environmental cost is already baked into the product. No more are being built (I believe the last CRT factory closed in 2008).

CRTs are still popular with one very select group: console gamers who cannot (rightly or wrongly) tolerate even a few milliseconds of lag that most LCD and plasma screens introduce (even in 'gaming mode').

      • +2

agree. Good for making an old gaming or arcade cabinet for classic retro gaming emulation. As LCD just cant handle the low resolution of these classic old emulation and gaming consoles.

        • +1

Hmm, I didn't even consider that. Arcade game cabinets just don't look genuine without a real CRT.

        • +6

Man, I crave for those arcade stations with a standalone streetfighter 2 console with CRT boxes.. too bad my carpenter-fu is weak.

        • Slowmo: Dude. Wood Fu.

        • +2

          Grasshopper. Level-up here: http://www.arcadecab.com/Intro.htm

      • +1

you forgot, the cool interlacing you get when you try to film a scene with CRTs in them… won't get that with nowadays technology. bah!

      • +4

Actually, you need a CRT-based display to play old light-gun games; they won't work at all on plasma or LCD TVs.

        • +1

Just moved across the country and left my old 68cm CRT behind.

Am now regretting this, as I have a spare room I could have turned into my Nintndo room and had crazy duck hunt parties :(

      • -3

Real gamers don't use consoles they use PCs…

Even if these are quicker at processing images than modern LCDs/Plasmas they are still a poor choice due to the shit resolution and size….

        • +10

Real gamers just play games; they don't get emotionally attached to the box they play them on ;)

    • +19

I'm quite certain my farts do more damage to the environment.

      • It's a pity the 'Explosions_Hurt' username is already taken…

        • maybe 'Farts_Hurt' not taken yet?

    • +5

      Put down the bong hippy.

  • someone buy a pile of these and make a house

  • Antique.. Could be worth more in 40 years..

  • +7

remove the tube and make a fish tank !

    • +17

Damn - I just got through converting all my fish tanks into CRT tvs…

      • How long did it take to train your fish to reverse?

    • genius

    • That's exactly what I was going to write !..
      have you done this ?
I've seen them before. How water tight are they?

  • +6

I can live out my rock n roll dream. I'm going to take one to the top floor in the highest hotel in Sydney and throw it out of the window :)

    • +5

And kill someone, good work idiot.

      • +3

Everyone knows you aim for the pool, just do it after the pool shuts. Or in winter.

        • +3

Pretty sure the owner would not give a shit if they own such a high rise hotel, just pay some poor boarding student to clean it.

      • +4

what a dick you are PainToad, get a sense of humour.

  • +2

is it compatible with my betamax ?

    • +3

Not only Betamax, it works with Laserdisc too! Not too sure about anything else though.

  • omg, they still buy set top box if they want to watch free air channel, they should sell to the hotel.

    • +43

This post made my head hurt.

      • exactly!

    • +3

Despicable 'use' of the english language.

  • +4

Are these tv HD or full HD? 50htz?

    • 50Hz, yes. 50x hurts your eyes through interlace flicker.

    • +14

      3D actually

      • yeah 3D if you are a liliput sitting inside the tube :-)

        • +1

its 3d if you get 2! one for each eye!

    • +5

full HD loooool yeah… they are heavy duty alright… one last you for decades.. always fixed by banging them. unlike the wussy LCDs nowadays. :P

    • +1

these are lastest/newer technology..much more advanced than 3D LED 200Hz.

  • You can get fat back Sony tv's on Ebay for 0.99 cents.

    • -_______-

You're not remotely familiar with the concept of shipping are you?

      • +1

It's not like big w have free delivery on this….

        • +4

          …you realise it's in-store, right?

      • +2

Yes i do know what shipping is,but most old tv's on ebay are pick up only just like this post.

  • +4

We can hook up blurry player and watch movies on it 

    • +15

blurry player to match the blurry tv?

  • +5

$10 to buy? Are they serious? I just put a 51" Sony TV (still working perfectly) out on the nature strip yesterday.

    • +6

      51"? Don't you mean 51cm! ;)

      • Could have been one of them hugeee rear projections.

        • I've seen that, even rear projection TV is costing too much electricity today(with the electricity bills in VIC)

    • +1

I threw out a 68cm CRT at the tip (& it didn't even smash atthe >2m drop) and have a 38cm sitting in the back room waiting for hard rubbish day. I also have a spare 47 inch led, not in use. So I don't understand the positive votes on this post ;P Not a bargain, if anything they should pay me for storage; they take up so much space :)

      • +2

the positive votes all goes to all the comments, read on!

      • I also have a spare 47 inch led, not in use.

        Ooh - can I have it? :D
We still haven't upgraded from our CRT yet :O
