Great price given that it's effectively the Echo 3rd gen but with zigbee included. The Echo 3rd gen is $150 and goes down to $100 a couple of times a year so this is a much better deal.

  • Philips Hue Bulb (B22)

Does it need the separate hue bridge?

    • +2

Echo plus series has build in controller

      • +4

Cheers. I found this review saying that it has most of the features of a bridge, but some are missing:

        https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R1BGI88540OBN2/re…

What you can do with the Echo Plus alone:
        1. Voice Control the lights.
        2. Change the color of the lights by voice, BUT you are limited to about 20 colors instead of the "16 million colors" that the > HUE bulbs are capable of.
        3. You can set routines and groups, which is nice.

What you CANT do without the HUE Bridge:
        1. Compatibility with many more sensors
        2. The ability to automate and set scenes
        3. get system updates over the air and future features.
        4. Have your lights sync with music

  • I believes this echo plus 2nd gen had temperature sensor

    • Correct, it has an in-built one

Seems to be also available in limited quantities at Officeworks for those looking for free delivery (metro).

    • Cheers doweyy. Got one delivered

    • Damnit just bought the JB one

  • What generation hue bulb is it?
Is it colour, white ambiance or just white?

    • It's 2nd generation white.

  • Is JBHifi the only one that offer bonus bulb? I want to get it on Amazon for free delivery but it doesn’t come with bonus bulb.

    • Officeworks have it as well with the bonus bulb

      • Thanks I just ordered. Been tossing between the Harman Kardon Allure but at this price, its too hard to say no.

  • This question may have an obvious answer but is the sound quality on this on par or better than the 1st gen OG Echo Plus?

    • I find sound quality on this model (Gen 2 Plus) is better than the Gen 1 Plus. The bass is a bit better, but that's about it.

But to be honest, my Echo Gen 2 Plus is about 4 metres away from my Sonos Play 3, and the Sonos absolutely destroys the Echo Gen 2 Plus in sound quality, power, and every other area. Just some food for thought.

      • +1

Yes I agree about the sound quality. It is unreasonable to expect this to compete with higher range speakers that cost few times more. However at a $100 worth unit, it performs well. I wouldn’t pay more than $150 for this as there are better units at that price range.

  • I thought this would be a good father's day gift so I went to jump on it but no stock in NSW so I checked officeworks and I can get it delivered for free so I pulled the trigger and then it gets instantly canceled.

"Unfortunately, we have had to cancel and refund your order as it did not meet our customer privacy and security standards when shopping with Officeworks."

Wtf? I then tried different payment methods like Paypal and my other credit card and also debit card, all instantly canceled. Everything is under my name and not sure why this would happen so I called Officeworks and the person pretty much just said there's nothing they can do and they don't know why this is happening and the only way to buy it is to make the order in person in store.

Such a bad experience, waste of time and petrol! Officeworks has probably the worst security team in Australia imo

    • i have same issue for months and they never bothered to solve even i called a lot times. Now OW shops in melb closed I cant buy anything from them.

  • genuine question, is this better than google hub i currently use?
    thx

    • I have both I personally like responses from Alexa and “Okay google” never really appealed to me. But this may be personal taste.

      • +1

You could say "Hey Giggle" or "Okay Cuddle" instead… that should get's Google Home's attention (You can also train it that way with your voice training).

    • +1

Both do the same thing. Google maybe be smarter if you ask fact-questions.

However, some may argue giving even more of your data/life to Google is undesirable.

  • Thanks, ordered one for Father's day.

  • Is this a good bluetooth speaker? Can you play music in the car ? Or do I need to connect it with the cable all the time

    • It doesn’t have battery so you will have to use cable at all times.

  • +1

FWIW - the inbuilt ZigBee hub more likely only works with Philips bulb and not with other ZigBee devices such as Xiaomi/Aqara etc. At least, I couldn't get the Aqara devices to work with Echo Plus!

    • Aqara doesn't work well with anything. No official support for IFTTT, Alexa or Google…

  • Seems to be sold out online. Now in store only

  • What’s the difference between this and the 3rd gen

    • If you mean third gen, Echo (not plus) it has the Zigbee bridge. I think the sound quality is supposed to be the same

  • how bright is the bulb? can't find information on jb site

    • 840 lm, 2700k

      • thanks, a bit too low for my study room

        • too low for anything. 2700k is the ugly yellowish "warm" light. I prefer 4000k cool or 6500k daylight. I just bought the amazon one because I would never use this bulb anyways.
