Waitress refused to change my order even though I am just order more of the same thing

I went to this restaurant today at lunch time at 1.10 pm , I was served by a waitress. I ordered 12 pork and prawn dumplings for $13.80 and some other dishes.

They have opening special price of 10 dumplings for $8.

After my food was served, I asked if I can get another 8 pork and prawn dumplings, so that I can get 20 dumpling for $16 instead of 12 dumpling for $13.80, taking advantage of the special price.

This is a pretty reasonable request, I was not asking for a refund or cancelling, I am buying additional food.

But the girl waitress, did everything in her power to deny me that request. She said she can not do that because she has already put the order into the system, that she has no way to modify my order once it has been entered into their system, I asked her if there is anyone in the restaurant that can help her to change my order, she said no, she would have to call her boss and it would be all much hassle to just save me a few bucks, literally her words. I was absolutely horrified at that comment and decided not to pursue my request and finish the meal and not come back as a return customer, apparently as a first time customer, I am a hassle and annoyance instead of a customer to her and I am apparently not worth her time and effort.

I have never been to any restaurant where once the order is in the system, it can not be changed or overridden by anyone in the restaurant.

She suggested I make another order of 10 dumpling for $8, instead of 8 dumpling for additional $2.20 ($8x2-$13.80) as I requested. She made no attempts to ask her colleagues or her superior if there is a way to modify my order or any way to help me. Pretty much just get your business with as least amount of service/effort as possible.

For those work in restaurant, is it true that once a order is in the system, before customer pay, waitress can't update the order?

  • +1

This is a pretty reasonable request

Yeah, no it’s not. You ordered 12, then ordered 8.

Next time, order in batches of 10 to get the deal.

    • -1

Which is 20 in total, before I paid a cent.

      • +3

Yeah, nah. It may be 20 in total, but you ordered 12 and then 8. Neither portion size is “10”. You tried to game the system and lost.

        • The total is 20, which is multiplicative of 10. Regardless of the technicality, the waitress didn't want to do anything to change my order.

Makes huge rant post on internet over a few $$’s

Something isn’t adding up here. What am I missing? Either you support the local business via your rich girlfriend’s parents or you’re using this angle as some form of argument lever.

You ordered 12. The deal was for 10. You went on to order 8, when the deal was for 10. Your order was entered as 12 and 8. This is a you issue, not a them issue.

            • @pegaxs: I don't dispute the fact that I ordered 12 first, and then I wanted 8 to make up 20 to get the special. I have stated that numerous times.

It is the fact that the waitress refused to help me that gets me.

@canberrascooter: Did you act like you did in this thread with the waitress in person? No wonder she refused to help.

Deal is for 10, not 12 and not 8. 10.

What next? Ordered 4 then 7 then 3 then 5 then 1… but she wouldn’t bill you for two lots of 10 to get the deal?

                • @pegaxs: nah, were extremely cordial. I asked her politely with a smiling face, when she refused and said that it is too much effort. I said it's okay no worries with a smiling face. But I was not happy inside at all.

                  • +6

@canberrascooter: So, instead of saying you were not happy with her or the store policy, you thought you would burden us with it instead?

Yeah, I’m not buying it. People don’t have the conversation you just described and then get on an Internet forum and produce a thesis on the interaction. I worked in hospitality for a long time to know exactly how all of this conversation went down. Did you wrap it up with the “well, I’m never coming back here again?” or did you let them know you’ll review bomb them on every site you can?

Hell, I want to know what place this is, just so I can send them a sorry card and buy someone a round at lunch. It’s people like you that make me want to support them.

If you like the place and want to support a local business that is probably doing it tough in these times, do it. Pay the full amount. Hell, it’s not even your money you are pissed off about.

OP, from the situation you've described, you are a difficult and over entitled customer.

The offer is 10 for $8, or as you have chosen the other offer for 12 for $13.80.

Your request for modification of an original offer came after accepting and consuming the offer. And the staff has every right to refuse which is perfectly normal.

The offer isn't offered in part or conjunction of another offer. You will see this disclaimer a lot in businesses, and a restaurant does not need a state the obvious.

You may think that you are entitled to modify the offer and as an expectation of good customer service, but you are wrong.

Good customer service is honouring and providing the goods as per the agreed offer, in a timely and friendly manner.

This is why you should be careful when causing a commotion for a 2nd modified order, it may taste a bit funny the next time around.

    • +1

OP, from the situation you've described, you are a difficult and over entitled customer.

Nope. It's a troll post. See the others they've posted as well as comments. Literally baiting people for reactions which unfortunately is working.

    • What the OP is pretty much asking the wait staff, amusing if they have a electronic POS. Is to cancel the current order (13 dumplings) and re-order 20 dumplings.

For a busy restaurant your pretty much screwing up the cancelling of orders in the kitchen and getting the manager involved in approving the cancellation. I don't think that fair on the restaurant staff and to kick up a fuss about.

Don't screw with the people who make you food, people will remember you.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/541425
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/509237

Obviously you need to clearly establish terms before agreeing to anything.

This remains the same, even with dumpling acquisition and negotiations.

(No Pot Plants were harmed in the sending of this reply).

  • +3

You ordered 12 dumplings, then ordered 8 dumplings. At no point did you explicitly order 10 dumplings for $8.
The customer is not always right, you can't order 4x 6 pack of nuggets and expect to get the 24 nuggets for $9.95.
You ordered 12 and then 8, yes they could've given you the deal if they were nice about it, but you can't expect it as your order was different to the 10 for $8

    • Also why is OP eating 20 dumplings at once, plus other dishes. Maybe the girl routinely changes and refunds orders for customers, but she just thought OP had eaten enough already. This could have been the scene she was seeing unfold before her https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veE1pGEaJig "eight dumplings. And the bucket"

  • -1

Regardless if the op didn't see the deal at the time, they should of just made the change and also done it with a smile. Without the customer they wouldn't be in business reason why the customer is always right. In this instance it cost them a returning customer and a 2 star review, hope they learn from the experience.

  • +1

If there was no 8 on the menu then you were ordering off menu. Also they do have to heat and prepare them, why would they go through that effort for just $3 when you're ordering off menu anyway. Menus are carefully designed to screw you like that but they are usually non negotiable. It's up to you to determine the best value for you before you order.

The girl could have removed the 12 dumplings from your order, which may mean refunding you, then put in two orders of 10, and then tell the kitchen to actually only prepare 8. And if you're never eating there again then she probably should have done that for you. But how was she to know that you'd overreact to being denied an unreasonable request. And it would have been rude of you to make he aware that you'd never eat there again unless she did that thing, it's a high pressure situation that isn't called for just because you couldn't decide how many dumplings you really wanted. She and the restaurant owed you nothing more than what you already paid for.

  • +4

My god… The sense of entitlement behind so many posts here nowadays is just depressing.

So let me summarize. The tortured some minimum wage waitress over a few dollars' savings on a second batch of dumplings, then came on here to what? Boast about you valiant defense of our fundamental human right to cheap dumplings?

Get some perspective mate, move on and maybe next time maybe consider that the pittance that your waitress earns isn't worth dealing with this sort of hassle.

  • -1

    Karen alert!!!!
From your post, you sound like a total Karen.
I would đź’Ż assume that you were rude to this poor waitress and she just didn't want a bar of you.
Get off your high horse and stop thinking the world owes you just because you paid for some dumplings.
The ego and self righteousness of people is always amazing to me.
PS: I don't think the restaurant will really care or be affected if you ever come back or not 🤣🤣

    • It is a Kenny and I think he is yanking our chains. Look at the rest of his posts.

  • Can we flag posts like this with a timewaster tag?

  • Another person who wants to blame everyone else for their own screw-ups.

  • What you're saying is, if the restaurant has entree and main course sizes of the same food, you order the entree and when it arrives and you like the look of it, you ask the waiter for more of it and turn it into the main size. No no no!

  • +1

I'm on the waitresses side. It counts as a second dish because the chef needs to cook it twice rather than once and serve it twice.

    • two 10 dumpling packs is also two dishes. What is the difference?

      • They still need to cook it twice instead of one batch. If you ordered a larger portion, they would only cook it once despite being served on two plates.

  • If your girlfriend was poor would she still be your girlfriend?

  • This is a trick many men try in brothels - highly undesirable. This is Australia - haggling is not custom.

Nope, I didn't overreact at all, my GF was with me so I didn't want to make a scene or anything. I was felling horrified but still put on an tatemae.

        • +1

          THE HORROR!

  • Why not just eat the extra dumplings? Far outt some people would kill for a few extra dumplings and here you are making a big deal out of it … IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE CHOSEN PEOPLE ON EARTH TO BE GIVEN DUMPLINGS EAT THE SHIT OUT OF THEM!

  • OP, I work in software - specifically order handling, stock, and such.
I can guarantee, once an order is fulfilled, and 'closed' in the system there is no going back and changing it.

    • That's a crap system. I used hotel management system before, it is very flexible in terms of customisation and pricing

  • If you have problems like this, then your life is pretty good.

  • OP, are you a Karen? Cause you sure sound like one lol

  • the boomers are out, using the Karen name

  • Who goes and has dumplings without their bikie enforcer? Your own fault.

  • Me ex Rachel would say 'This is why she is the young waitress and not the owner or customer'.. i wouldn't let little things get to you like this. She may not have been smart enough to know customer is king or how to do simple maths, but you stuffed up ordering by not giving it enough thought :)

    Say gidday to Nico!

  • How much was their humble pie?

  • +1

It's unclear how OP approached the situation or made the request or what his/her demeanor was etc.

I once ordered a meal from a chinese restaurant that uses an electronic ordering system. As soon as I ordered and paid for my meal, I looked to my left where I saw a specials board which had my meal on it plus an extra fried egg all for the same cost as the original meal ordered.

I asked if I could cancel the meal and order the special instead to which she said, sorry once it's been paid it cannot be changed. I put it down to a lack of awareness on my end, and let out a '..awwww… next time then..' to which she responded '.. that's okay, let me run to the back and tell them to give you an extra egg..'

OP complains about customer service but I've seen my fair share of simple questions asked in such a rude way by entitled people. Not saying OP is this kind of person, but it would be good to get the waitresses version of things in terms of what the customer was like.

    • Sure you can ask her for her version. I was extremely polite and my gf was present.

We even asked which part of China we're from.

      • Did you end up paying for breaking your friends pot plant?

Just trying to gauge the character of person, as what your version is of one thing is completely different to another's. You appear to be asking/posting a lot of posts about what others might see as straight forward outcomes.

Perhaps you're seeking validation for a course of action you took and possibly getting a little defensive when others don't agree with it.

Edit: The comment about the waitress was rhetorical

        • Did you end up paying for breaking your friends pot plant?

I was also eligible for free postage so I thought that meant I was entitled to ask for a discount because I was saving them postage costs.

Don't neg me, I have changed.

If the waitress was any good she would have mentioned the special when she first took your order.

I really don't know why people are so happy to accept bad customer service in this country, it's crazy.

If the waitress was any good she would have mentioned the special when she first took your order.

Agree. But perhaps it wasn't meant to be overtly promoted since they make more money from the menu price.

Annoying a paying customer over such trivialities just makes no sense at all.

Agree, but in this case the CS wasn't bad (perhaps she could have worded he response better).

The OP really doesn't have grounds to be upset it was his mistake. He also didn't express his dissatisfaction to the waitress anyway, so she wouldn't have known he was upset. Although, I agree, a customer shouldn't need to get angry in the first place (generally).

If I were the OP and missed a discount or special, I would have given it a shot and asked (like the OP did) and if it declined, no big deal, it was my fault. I wouldn't write a bad review and a forum post about it…

It's not a competition over who's right and who's wrong though.

It's an unhappy customer, who can be turned into a happy customer, for a few cents worth of dumplings.

        • Like I said, the waitress may not have had any clue he was unhappy.

nah, were extremely cordial. I asked her politely with a smiling face, when she refused and said that it is too much effort. I said it's okay no worries with a smiling face. But I was not happy inside at all.
