so disappointed with Samsung Note 20 series for not using Snap 865/865+, this Asus phone is a much better value for money and specs wise.

much better value? I wouldn't pay for half of the price for this Asus phone, the build quality looks pretty cheap with such a dated design, just awful. But thanks for sharing.

    • +9

Yeah! This candybar design is way more dated than all the other candybar designs.

the reason for the bezel is designed for landscape gaming, so that your skin does not interfere with intense gaming.
secondly, its for the front facing DIRAC speakers which allow you to have the audio advantage eg. surround sound, hear left / right footsteps in shooters, etc.
        your comment is outdated.

icymi, there hasn't been a great deal of variation in the rectangles used by phone designers ever since Apple sued Samsung in a battle for ownership rights to the rounded corner.

Built quality for the ROG II was suitable & there's no reason for that to have gone backwards for this phone.

Even with Harvey Norman's special margins it's $300 cheaper than the equivalent Note Ultra 5G, though last year it came with a lot more accessories for the price.
Also, it's not hamstrung in gaming by an Exynos SoC.

It would have been quicker for you to just say you didn't like Asus phones.

That moment a phone costs the same as a gaming laptop or desktop…

    • +19

Where were you for the past few years?

      • +3

        shrug

        • my NEC P3 was $5000 in 1990. had to take it to telstra to programme the number into the phone. Then $60 a month plus pay for very expensive calls

    • +8

I just noticed this phone has more ram than my gaming desktop..

        • +11

lol most are on 32gb now, ok boss.

  • Isn't the Snapdragon 865 missing support for major Aussie 5G bands or something? Which is why no one bothered importing S20's from OS?

  • +2

    This phone seems really good.

But I'm gonna hold off for the 6G, 1024gb,. With 16gb ram and Snapdragon 900. It has a 6.61" screen.

I've heard that no phone can compete with it. And it'll be a bargain at $1,999.

    • +5

      Does it run Crysis though?

      • +1

        No crysis no fs2020

  • Not entirely sure why a phone would need 12gb ram.

To hold things in memory for multi-tasking. The more memory available, the less the phone needs to shut down apps while the user is doing other things.
Especially helpful for game-oriented phones to be able to pause a level and come back to it 3-4 hours later and not have to start over because the phone needed the memory space for something else.

      • +1

But surely you'll still be forced to close apps for battery longevity.

        • Not really. Aside from the 6000mAh battery, memory uses bugger all power and only slightly more than bugger all if it's just holding something.

It's a different story when you're playing and it's constantly being written to, though even then it's still bugger all in comparison to other components.

Same price @ Wireless1 with a BONUS Anker 20,000mAh Powerbank

    • -2

for this spec you probably need another couple of these powerbanks for finish few rounds of gaming…

  • +4

The specs are quite similar with Oppo find x2 pro which is between $1200+ and $1400+

Considering findx2 pro has a better camera and build quality(not sure the actual quality)
Trust me 865+ won’t have any difference to 865 in terms of gaming. Also the 144Hz refresh rate comparing to findx2pro’s 120Hz refresh rate screen, at least I can’t tell any difference. ( I can’t even recognise the difference between 90hz and 120hz. Lol )

This one is still bit more pricy in my opinion.

    • +1

My thoughts exactly! Replying this on my Find X2 Pro and it's been a great phone since day 1. Also, 38mins to full charge is fantastic! I no longer keep my phone on a charger all night.

      • I second thing! Got the Oppo Find X2 Pro for $1147 thanks to an Officeworks price error and absolutely love everything about the phone!

    • actually no, there are no shoulder triggers.

So it's the same price everywhere because it's the RRP?

This site isn't for advertising retail releases.

    • +1

Good point, standard pricing. I wouldn't mind as much if it was a high demand item, but comments suggest this isn't the case.

  • Not to mention the never ending stream of bloatware on Asus phones….

    • they offer the stock home version in settings.

    • +1

Not so much on the ROG phones. The only bit of bloat is the Armory app & even that's kind of useful for adjusting phone settings on a per game basis.

I feel as though Gerry Harvey should be paying for the sponsorship and advertising on this site.

Where's the bargain? This is the normal price

  • +1

Tencent version is hundreds cheaper and same thing.

  • -2

ohh wow when you need 144hz to send a text and play fruint ninja.

  • get the asus rog phone 3 865 for $923
    snapdragon 865 plus 12gb ram $1023
865 plus with 16gb ram ~$1153 (estimate, not interested in 16gb ram in a phone cause its overkill)

other similar options include red magic 5s which preorder has released today too approx $923.

    theyre all on ebay.
combine with cashrewards approximately 1-2%, saves you another $10-$20.

tencent versions with global bands supporting all AUS telco bands (as long as ur not vodafone which sucks anyway), including international stock rom.

why would you even bother buying jb or harvey norman. is warranty really worth an extra $700 when ebay/seller/paypal will sort things out for you if there is a genuine problem? warranty seems more like a marketing ploy if u ask me.

    • PayPal will only cover for 6 months FYI.

    • Red Magic 5S is something I am looking at now, with my disappointment trying to order ROG 3 from buybuybox (my mistake).

Through Red Magic website, students get 5% discount too.

  • I can't even imagine spending $1700 on a phone. Although I guess it makes sense if you are using it instead of a computer, or can simply just afford stuff like this.

Grey import seem a lot cheaper, probably worth the risk.

    • buybuybox doesnt seem to have great reviews. avoid this one.

    • I ordered there about 9 days ago, they haven't shipped the item yet, and not replying to any of my messages asking for update.

I've now escalated to PayPal claim.

It's disappointing because I have bought a phone from them before.

After this, I will just stay clear from them. Waste of time.

  • Another grey import option is Black Shark 3 now going for under $700 on Aliexpress. Whether you trust Ali or Xiaomi is your choice…..

    • you dont want this. its 90mhz and underwhelming compared to this months released gaming phones..

  • not to mention the lenovo legion phone with 90w charging, 0 - 100% in 30mins, 0-50% in 10mins..
the choice is yours, wait or just get the rog. i got the rog because its design is sleek and modest, spec beast, 6000mah 1 charge will last whole day of intense workload and gaming or 2-3 days using as a basic phone.

black shark is underwhelming now compared to these recently released beasts, red magic, legion scream "im a GAMERRRRR" which is not really for me personally.
