Cheers for the brickhawk link - really keen on a NES set but I keep missing it.

Bought this twice, once for the train, and the second time for the electronics (cheaper to buy them this way, as the OP has said).

Paid $119 both times though…not sure what discounts were going around at the time. Amazon both times, so maybe it will pay to wait if you're a real tight-arse, otherwise I think it's still a reasonable price anyway.

This is definitely a worthwhile set and probably the best Lego train set for for first-timers, but I just wished they included a 4th car that was an identical control car to the first, so the train would look good going in forward or reverse.

        I would but I'm exclusively a Star Wars/Technic collector.

This is one of the rare Lego City exceptions to my rule and I would have no use for the extra track pieces.

Always remember, broadening your Lego horizons is a dangerous and expensive precedent. Best to stick to one or two themes tops.

I kind of forced myself to stick to themes in the top appreciation zones .
Normally unless some crazy specials repeat themes don't get close to competing .
          My bad .
Star Wars is still ok being around 7% pa in its history .
