Cyberpunk 2077, Is It Worth Going 4K?

I have a beautiful 32" 165hz LG widescreen 1080p monitor driven by a RTX2080 Super, is it worth changing the 1080p out for a 4K to play the new Cyberpunk 2077?

      I wholeheartedly disagree.

Can't edit once it's replied to lol

      • But can still reply to once it's edited ;)

  • 100% yes. Just try any 4K HDR game on PS4 Pro.

  • I bought a 4K tv, and games that are built for 4K for my ps4 pro look amazing. The older ones I don't see much of a different, but if it doesn't cost you much more, I'd definitely do 4K.

    • Yeah whatever the one x and ps4 pro do for 4k games looks fine to me, even if it is 30hz or whatever. Most games have been around 30hz for decades anyway. Movies are 24hz.

yes but then buy a RTX 3080 to run it

Depends what you value, framerate or resolution. Personally I run games at 1080p@120hz vs 4K@60hz, I prefer fast motion that looks more natural and all post processing effects at max. I found games at 4K will drop frames with action. I run a QLED TV so res isnt that noticeable on the couch

    • With the new GTX cards, 120hz at 4k will be achievable, rather than one or the other.

      • 3090 cinderblock of a GPU sure.

Rest not sure, I'm looking at going from a 2070 to 3070, its a bit better than a 2080ti, 60 maybe on a older title, not 120.

Will have to look a the benchmarks to decide

Even the 3080 can do it as can be seen here and Gpus are just going to keep getting better at 4k 120.

For a new screen, I think 4k 120 is worth it over 4k60 or 1440p120 or 1080p120 as it will just keep having reduced hardware costs associated with it and perform better as time goes on.

I tend to use the same screen for more than one build though so that affects my view.

          • @NobalaKoba: Interesting. DOOM is optimised and runs on a toaster, like to to see other games.

Having a think. for me is the HDMI interface is an issue, I game on a TV. 4K is limited to 60fp through HDMI. Damn it even if card can do it a TV cant, yet.

              @Bid Sniper: Hdmi 2.1 can do 4k 120.

There's more monitors and TV's with hdmi 2.1 that do 4k 120 coming out recently.

My TV is a 65" OLED 4K 120hz GSync LG C9 and is an absolute beast.

I heard the CX is getting some smaller models coming to AUS soon, but price is still high.

At least the tech is now there and consumer available, it'll just keep becoming more affordable from here.

              • @NobalaKoba: That is a beast TV! 2020 model?

My QLED wont do 4K@120hz, only 1080p.

                • @Bid Sniper: C9 is 2019 model, CX is 2020.

They're fantastic TV's and as soon as I saw the specs of the C9 before it released I knew I just had to get it.

                  • @NobalaKoba: the LG CX 55 is on sale atm for $3095 in most stores but I was hoping for a price on the CX 48 as my old gaming rig has a Samsung 46" 3D TV which is a great size. Seems after all my browsing it's now between the Odyssey G7 or G9 (on pre-order special at HN) and the LG CX.

Consider 1440p. It's a great inbetween res. Balances PQ and high framerate.

  • I would seriously consider a high end 1440p monitor 27" or larger over a 4k monitor. Your gaming framerates will be more sustainable over the next few years and 1440p has a nice lift in pixel density over 1080p to give you more eye candy.

Nah, getting 4K for gaming now will see you struggle for most AAA games - you'll either have to keep dropping big bucks for the highest end cards in order to keep up, or drop the graphics settings down a few notches. Also getting 4K at anything over 60Hz is a PITA - your graphics card will struggle, and even if not you'll have to deal with DSC, multiple cablesor chroma subsampling issues.

If you must upgrade resolution, stick to 1440p max if you're mostly gaming on it.

IMO you'll see greater improvements if you pick a panel with better contrast - VA gaming panels are getting better at motion handling nowadays and give superior contrast to IPS. Check out RTings if you want way more information than you ever asked for about monitors…

  • Not with a 2080 Super, you'd be better off with a high refresh 1440p display. If you're after the best overall, you'd probably be looking at the Samsung G7, but note that quite a few people have been having problems with Gsync and the 1000R curve may not be something you can tolerate

This is next level pre-ordering here. Not just $75 for a game but several hundred $ for a new monitor!

    • That's like saying buying a TV is like pre-ordering movies to the next level. A new monitor will benefit more than just one game.

      • You guys don't throw out your hardware after using it once? I've been doing it all wrong.
I realise he can use the monitor for other things, I just find it amusing that he wants to purchase it specifically for a game that hasn't been released yet.

        • Ozbargainer gamers use Ebay.

went from a 1070 to 2070 just to play subnautica smoothly. Old car on ebay, sale on ebay for 2070, significant upgrade $200 out of pocket and enjoyed all other games with performance boost. on lower deprecation curve with 2070 and will upgrade to 3070. Sell 2070 for $500 by 3070 for $800-900, $300 upgrade.

OP will probably do the same if has no use for the current monitor

Do you think he's gonna play Cyberpunk and then proceed to never play another game on it again or something?

Nothing wrong with wanting to play a game with the best possible experiance.

You got people out there spending thousands on certain TVs for PS5 purely because they support HDMI 2.1 (4k120hz even though there zero chance games will play at 4k 120hz on it at least any games that wouldn't run on a toaster haha)

  • Ultrawide 1440p 144hz+ is the way to go mate
It's the perfect balance between resolution and HZ, and also Ultrawide is bloody amazing.
I had a 2080 super till a few weeks ago when i sold it in preparation of RTX 3000

  • So many choices!

Thanks for the advice gang, it's good to hear from others so I can make sure my perceptions are realistic.

Originally I was looking between Asus ROG Swift PG43UQ (maybe it's older sibling the Asus ROG Strix XG438Q) or the new LG 48 CX OLED (was leaning towards this one), sounds like I should consider other monitors like the Samsung Odyssey G7 or G9.

Lucky I held off, my initial impulse was to buy a 4K LG from Umart which was on special at the time but has since gone out of stock.
