What Are Some Nice-to-Have Items that I Should Buy for My New Home?

As per the title. Have been renting so I have all the essential things (fridge, bed, tv etc) but as I’m about to move into my first home, I’d like to hear about your household items that seem non-essential but now you’d highly recommend to others? I guess it’s a bit of a celebratory housewarming present to myself…

Eg. Airfryer. (I already have one but this is a non-essential item which is more of a “nice to have/make life easier” item)

    Fixed interest loan

    BBQ
    Coffee machine
    Outsource your mowing
    Build a veggie patch
    More power points
    Solar panels and maybe battery

    • +5

Outsourcing your mowing is a good way to get outsourced weeds too.

  • +4

    Chromecast Ultra
    Arlo Pro
    Aldi lawn mower

    • +1

We recently got an electric mower and it’s great. So much quieter and no fumes. I would highly recommend one if you have a lawn

      • +13

Yeah but then you won't smell like petrol fumes mixed with sweat and therefore don't get the luxury of swearing like a construction worker and quenching a hard earned thirst with a big cold beer.

I have a rocket mozzafiato coffee machine that I purchased a couple of months ago together with a new grinder. It's an expensive hobby, but certainly still cheaper than buying coffee out everyday (I drink 1-2 coffees a day everyday).

It's certainly no aldi beans paired with breville - although I used to have that for a few years before I upgraded big time.

If you're in the same predicament as I was, then I'd say it's a good "spoil yourself" piece! St. Ali currently selling the La marzocco Linea Mini for $5990 with 2 years worth of italo disco coffee beans delivered free. Not the cheapest, but certainly one of the better LM deals!

    • +1

Had an ECM which is now the Rocket brand. Lasted at least 10years. It was cheaper to have it one shipped from a Sydney store to Melbourne than getting it locally. Might be looking to get back into a Rocket. Already have a grinder which is still working.

      • +1

I strongly believe the ECM craftsmanship is a whole level above rocket. Little details like the stainless steel slide on the tray, the way it fits perfectly with magnetic latch, the smoothness of the handles and pivot, the rounded edges and lack of welding spots as it's all one piece of metal.

I love my rocket, and I think it's a great looker. But ECM quality and attention to detail cannot be beat by rocket.

How many years that you need till it reaches break even point?

      • About 1.5.

  • Tv, You will be bored if you don't have one.

    • +11

I don't. I use PC and mobile devices more than TV

      • If you watch video entertainment on the largest of those screens, then it basically a TV. You can't really tell people you don't own a TV or don't watch TV.

        • +2

yes I can. Read the OP question. and don't confuse people with TV and monitors.

          • @ntt: Do you tell people you don't watch TV? And do you also tell them that you watch streaming services all day on your big screen monitor?

            • +1

@AustriaBargain: OK, I see what you keen on. I do not bother to have a TV to make me feel happy.
YES, I use PC, mobile devices and they are big enough to satisfy me, including streaming netflix , prime, gaming, and …whatever the rest.
And stop saying big screen monitor or whatever you imply it is a TV. You have a big screen TV, cool. Everyone has different things to enjoy their life, I actually don't own a TV until late 30, and don't use it a lot.

  • -5

Are you owning or renting? As some things are more 'owner' items.

But insurance even if just renting, get contents! (but if owning, get home/contents!)

Pick and match from what is listed above already, but I'll add good wifi!!! So a mesh system like google wifi to get the show rolling.

    • +5

You don't read much to you. If you read the OP, you'd know if they were buying or renting.

  • +15

A Toilet Plunger. You won't know you need one until you need one.

  • +8

    Robot vac
    Nice ornamental or fruit trees
    Indoor plants
    Coffee machine
    Under sink water filter system
    Solar panels
Nice door mat / entrance mat

    Thermomix

    • +11

      …. is an overpriced whisker

its a finish the sentence question right?

      • +8

        Q. How do you know if someone has a Thermomix?
        A. Oh, they'll tell you…

      • -7

Those that can afford it, buy it - those that can't neg it.

      • -2

        Ignorance is bliss, right?

      • +2

I want a microwave that has a stirring device in it, stir my stuff with a plastic spoon. When the recipe on the back of the box says to stir 3 different times during the cooking process it really becomes much too involved, requires too much attention.

  • Everything that xiaomi made. From kettle, slippers, umbrella, cup, heater, etc

  • +8

    Veggie patch as said above
Strip lighting for kitchen and/or bathroom
    Sonos

  • +2

    A cockatiel.

  • +4

Definitely a nice coffee machine. Or a robot vac.

    • +1

Took the words out of my mouth, definitely coffee machine followed by robo vac.

      • +1 never underestimate the importance of a good coffee machine and nice lil robovac

  • -1

an ATM to keep your money and easy withdrawal :)

    • +4

Mine have legs and yell at me for trying to withdraw. Not recommended!

    • Easy withdrawal for robbers?

  • I spent 2k on a pocket spring latex mattress a long time back. I recently replaced it with a full latex mattress ie one big lump of rubber. I am a big fan of it.

I also have a safe to house my high yield investments…

    • +1

Or in other words, a garage.

  • Robo vac

  • +15

Definitely have excessive amounts of CAT6 cabling running to every room in the house - guarantee in the future you will still be looking for just one more connection. Yes WiFi throughout the property is a must but you can't beat hardwired for the non-portable devices (it also frees up bandwidth for the mobile devices).

A fire-resistant safe - for those essential documents as well as a copy of important digital files.

Have a few favourite personal photos professionally enlarged/printed/framed and mount throughout the home.

    • +1

      second this.

My house has 4 ethernet ports, 2 to master and 2 to living room.

Master just connects to desktop and TV.
Living connects to TV and as another access point. It's amazing.

How do you run more cables? Is it having another router or more switches and drilling holes to guide the cables to each room?

      • +3

How do you run more cables?

I did it the the lazy way - had a cabler come in and crawl around under the house to run everything back to a 24 port switch. Was definitely worth the smallish expense to have it done right (and much more professionally/neater/safer than I could have done)

        • Ahh the perks of the older house design! I don't have that option so it'll be drill through walls and ceilings. Might just put this project on hold!

          • +1

@pippohippo: i got cat6 cabling done for my POE reolink cameras which was all done from the attic and small hole in wall to get the wire out. Also I got 3 cat6 ports done during house construction.

            • @jedimaster: That's awesome. I need to do some googling and workout the best way to do my cabling.most likely have to drill through walls along the ceiling of ground floor and through the floor on the first floor.

              • +1

@pippohippo: i hired someone from airtasker if that helps. more professional touch ;)

    • It's a shame we can't DIY ethernet cabling in Oz.

  • +6

    Stick vac and/or robo vac
Coffee machine (if you drink coffee)
    Hot water dispenser
    OLED TV + Switch/PS/Xbox
Nice comfy L-shaped sofa and/or recliners
    Smart doorbell + security cams
Room spray (if you're into scents)
    Outdoor fire pit

  • +2

Hammer drill if you want to do some reno around the house / building furnitures.

    • Cool , but in my case if your a veggie at that thing it wouldn’t be much use .
Maybe for supporting tradies to fix up the failed DIY ‘s :)

  • +6

    Hammock
    Chaise lounge
    Solar panels

    • +1

Plus one to the hammock - it’s so relaxing to just chill in on a sunny day.

Wall mount your flat screen tv - makes it looks so much nicer and saves entertainment unit space

  • Nice curtains or blinds.

    • +1

      what would you consider 'nice'?

      • -1

        Plantation.

      • Silent Gliss curtains & blinds.

    • Good to oxygenate the house, but be educated about what you buy - some are poisonous ( https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/charming-dieffenbac… ).

      • +1

Yes, something to consider if you have pets or little ones who will try and eat them.

The plants absorb the poisons out of the air and concentrate it. A local pool was lined with peace lillies which looked amazing, until the staff went around and removed all the flowers

  • +1

    pizza oven
    robot vac
    in-ceiling speakers
    solar panels

  • +1

    First of all, Congrats!!

    Xmas lights 🤣

  • +2

I think a must is a large secure parcel box .

    • I've seen a house with one, looks good and practical - where do you get these from?

  • +3

Good quality Knives & a chilled/hot filtered water dispenser e.g. zip or billi tap.

  • +2

large wall map cuz maps are cool

  • +2

The 2020 Ikea gimp collection is nice

No home should be without one.

  • +1

    airfryer and a projector

    • The projector is a real need for me - now to convince the wife.

      • you just need to buy an airbed and promise her weekly movie night in

        • I need to find a few more movies worth watching on a big screen - she is more into short run series than movies that benefit from cinema style viewing. Maybe I can get her to appreciate Top Gun (the original) on a big screen - one of her favourites for some reason (half naked, sweaty, muscular men may have something to do with it).

  • +6

“Live, Laugh, Love” wall decals for the bedroom or lounge.

    • +1

I've always wanted to blow my brains out all over one of those things.

Give the people finding my body a good chuckle

      • Makes a good conversation starter for guests.

        Guest walks into the room:

        "Oh, FFS…"

    • +1

And "Dance like nobody's watching, Love like you've never been hurt…." posters in every other room.

  • +6

buy a projector for your bedroom so you can shoot an image to the ceiling and watch movies while lying down

  • +9

buy a hydroponics kit to grow "tomoatoes"

    • +6

Good roof insulation so thermal doesn't pick up that you're growing a ton of tomatoes in your ceiling space.

  • +2

Depending on your likes these may not be suitable for you, but my most used "nice to have" items are:

    1. Coffee machine - something decent, not the cheapest one you can find.
    2. Philips hue lights - we tried kmart ones and didn't like that turning them off / on again didn't reset them to their usual state, though we had our first power outage at 3.30am Sunday and ALL hue lights came on 100%
    3. Google assistant to control the lights and answer questions / set timers
    4. Decent cooking equipment - think Global knives, Stainless steel cookware, cast iron pan
    5. Portable induction cooker - our previous stovetop was garbage and couldn't get the pan hot enough, the induction did a fantastic job of it.
    6. Bluetooth power consumption device, really cool to see how much power is being used at a given time
    7. Water filter
    • Have you got a recommendation of a Bluetooth power consumption device?

      • TP-Link Smart Plug w/Energy Monitoring is something I use for my 3D Printers. It's Wifi (not bluetooth).

  • +1

    Insulation

  • +1

    10git local network

  • +8

A nice rug that will really tie the room together.

  • +3

    Hookers and blow.

  • +1

Wood fired pizza oven and a quality water filter for sure

  • +4

Decent set of cutlery - 18/10 quality. I picked up a Tablekraft Cutlery set when I got my place and love them.

  • A nice set of kitchen appliance.
Definitely a good vacuum, Miele comes to mind.
Definitely also a good washing machine or French door fridge.

    • Not a Dyson?

      • +1

I have always used Miele, so I have a bias. The name sounds better as well IMO lol…

    • +3

A big sack of rice and a rice cooker

  • Santoku knife

  • +1

Breville Smart oven Pro (or a good standard oven)
    Coffee machine
    Dryer
    Magnetic knife rack as suggested
Digital front door lock so you dont have to carry keys
    Night light in hallway
    Ceiling fans
High quality hose on retractable holder
    Lemon tree

    • +1

I second all this and add:
      Lawn/Garden Fertilizers, Garden tools
      Garage Shelving
      Non Slip Drawer Mats
Pantry\Linen Shelving boxes from Kmart, Bunnings
      Windex & Cleaning agents
Good setup for Study area (desks, monitor, printer, chair, bookshelf etc)
      Cable Ties!!!!!!
      Dymo label printer
Wifi Mesh for coverage throughout your new home
and the list goes on mate…..

    • smart oven over the phillips airfryer?
