  • Thanks OP. Got one!

  • Thanks OP! Ordered one for $400 last week but cancelled a few days later. This price is too good to pass up!

  • Would these work in the new DS920+?

    • +1

Yeah should be fine in any Synology NAS.

  • My wallet hurts. I pulled the trigger and bought 3.

    • +1

I think someone was saying earlier that when you make purchases over $1,000 in total, they give you an additional fee.

      • Now that we will pay get, I don't think this applies any more

        • pay *GST

  • +2

Are people backing these up. That's a lot of data to lose with a head crash…

  • Do people use it to store personal data like files, pictures, movies? Or use with backup services?

    • yes, I have a Raid 1, plus two drives like these to back them up. think i got about 3TB of movies/pics now.
(I rotate the two drives offsite so i wouldnt loose to much in the event of a failure)

  • Drive sizes are crazy nowadays. Theres going to be a day in the future when someone's gonna lose 14 TB of data.

    • +1

      That happens every single day.
… Luckily they bought more than one 14TB drive, so they just restore from a backup and carry on as
      normal ๐Ÿ‘

      • Thats $680 and 28 TB of data. What the heck are people so precious about? Their bluray rips??

        • +2

          Linux ISO's mate

        • To people with imagination, their dreams are valuable and even 28tb is only enough to old a fraction

  • I saw some posts on other hard drive deals saying they come with AU power plugs, do these come with AU plugs?

    • No, but you can ask WD support nicely to get one and they'll ship one for free.
So you'll have 2 adapter's in the end (but only one with AU plug).

    • My drive came with both a UK plug (yuck) and an EU 2-pin (which I much prefer :) )

      • I got the same two snap-in plugs. I asked for an AU snap-in via support > warranty and got a reply around an hour later asking for a shipping address.

  • +1

    Now $419.22.

  • Took a week to ship but has now been shipped on Friday and arriving today.. so 4 days delivery time over a weekend.. that's pretty freaking awesome..

    • I ordered on Sep 6th and yet to be shipped.

  • +1

Received 3 of 14TBs today, delivered by DHL, took 9 days from UK , really fast consider I have a parcel come from same city took 5 days .

    • Hope yours were packed a bit better than mine.. 2 drives in a cardboard box with only 1 side having airbags. Box was a bit worse for wear. Still, they've powered on and seem fine. No AU plug, only EU & US..

      • You can ask for an AU snap-in plug via support > warranty at no cost to you.

        • +1

They sent me 2 whole new adapters.. :)

          • +1

@Vladdo: Huh, dunno why they would do that, but hey, you're sorted now. Oh and my box came with cardboard filler, not the usual air bags. It worked fine so it's all good.

For anybody wondering, this is what is in the enclosure according to CrystalDiskInfo - seems to be CMR, Helium filled.
    WDC WD140EMFZ-11A0WA0

CristalDiskMark below, this is with the disk still in the enclosure until I make sure there's no issue with the drive, after which this is likely to replace my existing internal HDD setup.
    SEQ1M Q8T1 - 207 MB/s Read, 204 MB/s Write
    SEQ1M Q1T1 - 205 MB/s Read, 205 MB/s Write

It's also surprisingly quiet during the benchmark, so good initial impression.

    • I'm doing extended test on mine, using wd software. I can hear a few soft knocks like tapping your finger on plastic. should I be worried ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

    • Those heads still gotta seek ๐Ÿ˜‰

Unless it's loud or the SMART counters don't come clean I'd think you're good.

  • Finally got the HDD this morning. Never shucked them before.

From what i have read, I need to run a scan while its still in the box to ensure there are no errors.

What is everyone using to test the drive before shucking? Wester Digital Software like "WD Drive Utilities for Windows" or another?

    • that's what I used. 20 hours elapsed, 2 more to go ๐Ÿ˜‘

      • +1

You can run WDdufw in parrelel and do them all at once (if you have enough usb ports ofc). Been a while since I used it last, if it doesn't open a second instance, do "run as administrator" to get a second one going.

        • +1

My bad, I actually meant WDDLgD (WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics). It had been so long since I used it, I assumed the one mentioned above was it ;)

          • @CyberGenesys: Thanks for this. Is running Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics (EXTENDED TEST) enough or should I get Windows to do a full scan when it's done?

Looks like it will take 19 hours. Fair enough, I can wait another day. I've put a USB fan on it in case it overheats.

    12.7 TB ><"

There's no way to get it closer to 14 right?

    • +3

Count it decimal like the hard-disk manufacturers (1000), you will get your 14TB.
Your computer counts it in binary (1024), so sees less than the decimal 14TB.
      So 14000000000000 /1024/1024/1024/1024 = 12.73TB

  • I ordered 4. In one order 1, in another order 3. No import fees. I was not planning to buy 4, but the first 1 looked so lonely…

I believe the order limit was 5, and can be found when you try and add 30 drives to the cart (a warning appears).

Shucking is easy. Just pull. No tools or prying needed, and no broken clips.

I've not typically pre-tested these, but since the shuck was non damaging I can reassemble if needed.

  • Thanks Team!

I attached the drive via USB but WD Utils as it kept saying attach drive. Gave up and shucked it.

For those interested, the drive is a WD140EMFZ.

    Looks like its a - https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-libraryโ€ฆ

    • I kept having the same issue, i just did a chkdisk via cmd and called it good from there lol

    • Try WDDLgD (WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics), should provide the same options as WD Utils but is only 600kb.

      • yep found that and works a charm :) thanks!

    • BIOS couldnt recognise the drive. looks like 3rd pin issue. :(

can you use electrical tape or is there a specific tape that should be used?
      or
can you use the Molex to Sata cable instead?

      • As long as the 3rd pin doesn't get 3.3V, you're good. Doesn't matter if it's because you aren't supplying 3.3V as is the case for Molex adapters or if there's 3.3V, but it's blocked as in tape, nail polish, physically scrapping the contact off.

      • So the molex to sata works a treat!

I would recommend that instead of mucking around with tape.

        • Just make sure that the SATA end isn't moulded. Been reports of fires due to shorts. Depending on the SATA connectors your PSU uses, could also be easy to remove the orange 3.3V wire without damaging anything and avoid adapters. Can't think of any time you'd actually use it, but if wanting to sell the PSU later, would want it restored.

  • Mine arrived fine, had EU/UK plugs but used my Seagate external psu (12v 1.5a) was replacing a 4tb for my raspberry Pi NAS.

    • I got the same two snap-in plugs. I asked for an AU snap-in via support > warranty and got a reply around an hour later asking for a shipping address.

      • Nice I might ask for one, I have a bunch of 12v 1.5a power supplies anyway so I am fine.

  • Was anyone able to switch between the EU/US plugs? I've been trying to press the "Open" button for the last 10 minutes with no luck!

EDIT: Nevermind. I turns out I have to pull the switch rather than press on it.

    • I got the same two snap-in plugs. I asked for an AU snap-in via support > warranty and got a reply around an hour later asking for a shipping address.

      • Nice. Did you ask on Amazon or to WD themselves?

        • Western Digital. It was nice and simple but I was expecting pain.

  • +1

Test took 23 hours. All good.

Question - Is it normal for these 14TB WD to make a clicking noise or parking noise constantly?

    • Same question I had. their clicking seems a bit harder than I expected. Still have the box in case I need to return it

  • +1

Someone just asked me how to get the AU plug so I'll put this here.

I received a message less than an hour later from [email protected] asking for postal address etc. 13 days later I received a package with a full AU plug (not just the snap-in I asked for) and another USB 3 cable.
