Where to Buy Cheap Pepper Can Be Black or White

So finding cheap salt is easy but finding cheap pepper is quite tricky.

What's the best value black or white pepper you guys can find.. I'm assuming bulk is best..

The cheapest I can find is like $38/kg or $30/kg but you need to grind it.

Salt is like $0.90/kg or $3/kg in those convenient drums..

Are you telling me you can't buy pepper in bulk cheaper per kg than $30/kg?

I am looking to buy a few kgs once and just use them over a few years since pepper doesn't really expire and I have lots of space to store food.

So where is a good place to maybe cheaply bulk buy some ground fine pepper.

I have a grinder somewhere but I used it for chili one time and the mess it made and having to pour it made it both uneconomical and wasteful.

So TL;DR where to buy cheap fine ground black or white pepper can be in big bulk or in fairly large serving containers because I don't think I'm gonna find cheap pepper in 125g containers or smaller.

Costco or a catering supplier. Not sure why you need kilos of pepper nor why this is worth your time over a $2 jar from Coles whenever you need more.

Edit: Oh, it's an AlienC post. That explains it.

    • The bulk buyer in me is strong.. crazy but strong.

Don't really think many sane people buy pepper by the kg for HOME use.

    But why!?

Costco or any catering place will be your best bet for cheap pepper.

Did you even google? The first hit has pepper for $18/kg or $14.80/kg if you order 10kgs. They also have a 10% off your first order. So cheaper again.

Realistically I think I need about 4-5kgs of pepper and looking for the most cost effective choice.

I found that pepper lasts anywhere between 2-4 years and it doesn't really spoil or go bad to make you sick it just loses flavour and quality.

      • +31

There is no way in the world you are using 4-5kg of pepper in 2 years. Far out, just buy a bloody pepper shaker.

Maybe they are making their own cured meats?

Even then I would want as fresh as possible

          • +10

@greatlamp: OP’s previous history indicates they live in a vegetarian household; doubt they’re making their own cured meats.

4-5Kg of pepper is about 1000 teaspoons. Let's say you have one teaspoon of pepper every single day. That means your 4-5Kg will last about three years. I don't think a teaspoon a day every day is a realistic consumption rate for pepper, unless you're putting it on your weeties instead of sugar.

        • Even 1 teaspoon of pepper is a lot

          • @Serapis: That's what I'm saying, but AlienC seems to think that's what he's going to consume.

I use about 1 - 2 teaspoons (of whole corns) most days in our family cooking.

Mortise and pestle is the way to go for grinding.

I buy mine in 500g bags from our local Asian or Indian grocers - usually cost about $8.

        • Main use will be for chips and potato bake.

And to make some of my households food have some flavour when I get trapped into dining with them.

Tabasco, sesame oil, soy sauce and chili powder has saved me in the past now pepper will join this expedition.

      • it just loses flavour

Adding flavour is the whole point of pepper. Don't buy bulk ground pepper. If you really must stock up, stock up on whole peppercorns and buy a pepper mill - here's a cheap one, here's a better one. Refill it every 6 months from the bulk peppercorns.

      $14.70 a kilo that's 50% off and it's already ground not bad.

I just received an Amazon order recently damn wish I had seen this.

Go to any Indian grocery store. They have bulk packs of pepper that you can pick up pretty cheap!

P.S - you'll also get large size packs of other dry spices you need such as cardamom, cloves, turmeric, coriander powder etc. generally in 200gm packs. Much cheaper than the tiny packs they sell at coles / wollies

  • I will only accept black peppers in my household.

    • +4

oh shit, i actually have some white pepper, segregated away in the back of the cupboard.

  • +14

Pre ground pepper years old sure is going to lack some of its oomph

Whole peppercorns stored air tight maybe, but there's a reason they don't sell massive bulk packs of pre ground pepper

    • I may (profanity) up then with a recent Amazon AU order coming this Friday.

What's Amazon's cancellation or return policy?

    • "Vietnam has emerged as the world leader in pepper production. For 2013, it exported between 130,000 and 135,000 tons of pepper at a value of around $900,000,000."

So wholesale is 7 USD or about AUD $10/kg.

Remember people used to literally sail around the world or trek camels across deserts for pepper and other spices.
    $30/kg would be luxury!

It will deteriorate in flavour over multiple years in storage, so I would hesitate to buy too much. Our family of 6 uses about 200g a year.
Coles has white pepper at $30/kg or black whole corns at $25/kg - but sold in normal 100g-200g sizes.

Maybe stock up on the free sachets at McDonalds or somewhere else next time you are at a food court?

I've heard that pepper was once worth its weight in silver, I dunno how many thousands of dollars per kilo that would be in today's money!

      • Silver is currently AUD $1,100 per kilo…. Gold on the other hand.

    • Maybe stock up on the free sachets at McDonalds or somewhere else next time you are at a food court?

That stuff is pepper bark chips - no flavour found there.

Asian/Indian shops (< $20/kg), may be you can grow them in Sydney climate, super easy to grow in right climate.

Black pepper should be the house staple imo. But, if you're thinking about any pepper then it don't matter if it's black or white. They print expensive white pepper ads in the Daily Telegraph, but store brand is actually second to none. I told you about quality and it's true. Either you're wrong or you're right. But honestly, if you're thinking about pepper types it don't matter if it's black or white.

    • That doesn't work so well without music behind it.

      • Do you wanna be starting something?

        • Well, you got to be starting something

  • Not sure if I'm reading this right (I mean I'm searching for bulk pepper at 4am….) but 6kg for $11.95? At the very worst, surely it's at least 1kg under $12.

    • Damn nice find but they only deliver to South Australia in 3 postcodes.

Also minimum for delivery is $75 so won't work for me in NSW but thanks for the effort I appreciate it.

  • I have used this guys for spices and nuts. A reliable small local business that import themselves, cheap prices. $10.80/kg for ground black pepper https://www.nutgrocer.com.au/spices/black-pepper/

    • All of those prices are higher than local grocers or even supermarkets.

      • Like to know how you figured that out or what I am missing. Checking Coles no name ground black pepper online is $1.65 for 50g vs Nut Grocer at $10.80 for a Kg.

        • Not pepper, but everything else.

And the fact that the ground costs 50% more than the whole suggests that it's not just pepper haha

    • Shipping kills it unfortunately.

Already ordered 2kgs of black pepper powder, 500g of cracked black pepper and one packet of soya wadi from Amazon AU.

So this will have to be for next time maybe in 10 years if they are still around.

  • You need a course in business strategies…

You are willing to tie up your assets in a product that would be sitting around taking up valuable space, for 10 years or more.

Look at car manufacturing, they run on a strategy of J.I.N, Just In Need. Thus they maintain liquid assets (money) to pay for the business, and no need for expensive storage (pantry) cost.

Get smart… I thought this was a smart site!

      • I thought it was Justin Timberlake.

    • Well for what it's worth storage is not a problem and I don't think we can store cars where I live to make some money nor will it go good in a potato bake wait what are we talking about again.

Op has found the next big hoarding item for Covid panic buyers. Pepper.
It will sit nicely with the unrealistic toilet paper stash.

Off to coles now to beat the mad rush!

    • Pepper is the cure to all our ailments including loneliness I mean covid.

  • Indian groceries. All kinds of pepper in all kinds of form available in large quantities.

  • Ended up getting some pre ground black pepper from Amazon AU.

Will probably ended up getting the coles brand white pepper at $30/kg.

It is around $17/kg at some websites but shipping kills it and I only need about 1-2kg max of white pepper.

Gonna be making large batches of potato bake for home food soon so stocking up on black and white pepper and maybe chilli powder if I find the right one.

    • +6

So after all that this guy gets some pepper from Amazon and will stick to the Coles brand at $30/kg. Yeah ok

      • Well the other options weren't as cost effective or didn't deliver to nsw so this is the best we got.

I think the Amazon AU white pepper is out of stock but I preordered one.

    • How many DOZENS OF KILOS of potato bake are you making to justify these massive quantities of pepper?

      • -1

Not a lot but other people in the house will use it for cooking and making chips etc.

This way I don't have to think about it for a few years even then it still might be edible and have some taste in ten years who knows I'm interested to know honestly how certain foods keep especially long lasting items or "non perishables".

Not gonna lie this is somewhat a curious experiment like my i7-2600 1050 Ti 4k gaming pc and the verdict on that one is that you can game at 4k on some games but low settings and below 40 fps.

Yeah I dunno finding it hard to find good home made recipes I can do without stuffing it up or buying a lot of ingredients that don't keep well.

At least with potato bake it really is only potatoes, cream, cheese salt and pepper to taste but the cheese might be all you need flavour wise we will see.

Minimal prep and clean up.. Ingredients are easy to manage.

I try to not complicate food too much leaves less headache throwing out stuff and more head space for other stuff.

I am considering making subway recipes at home but honestly you need more commitment in the week to make that because food will spoil and you will have excess leftover ingredients which you then have to throw or make more of something that can utilise it.

There are zero waste people I'm more of a full utilisation kind of people I still produce waste but I try to use all of the cow per we but I don't always achieve that unfortunately I'm not perfect just trying to be it's a never ending process.

Sorry for the wall of text hope it helps or reminds some body.
