Would 100% buy this as a daily laptop for my non gaming partner if she needed an upgrade.

    • +5

And what are you planning to buy for your gaming partner?

      • +3

        Ps5

        • +3

The gaming partner always gets looked after.

      • +1

Well played Marty… Well played :)

  • +9

You had me at it runs Fortnite

  • +11

    Just be aware…

    • no Webcam, not even a basic one that looks up your nostril

    • Port selection is a bit prehistoric - 2 USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0, plus your standard Audio jack and HDMI.

    • no backlit Keyboard

    • Also in one of the reviews which shows the picture of the box, it says:
      “Integrated graphics”
      Description said “dedicated”

      • +15

The integrated graphics are dedicated to the owner.

        • I'm looking for a 14" laptop with 3 USB-A's for pops.

Was going to get previous gen Acer Swift3 had great port selection + a USB-C
          (couldn't find any stock sadly)

Current gen Swift 3 they removed one USBA 🤬🤬

      • it's a Ryzen

    • Thanks, no webcam makes it useless for most people these days. Even my 120 dollar chromebook has one

      • +5

No webcam makes it useful for the privacy conscious?

        • +4

so could a piece of tape, a disabled driver, or one of those stick on sliding windows. Esp since covid no webcam makes this a non-starter for most people who work

          • +1

@Jackson: A lot of people have separate work laptops for that anyway. No webcam wouldn't be a big deal for a lot of people, I've used mine like twice in a year

            • @tpup1: A lot of people have their laptops bought for them by their employer, for just about every small business owner I know their personal laptop is their work laptop. For a part that can cost as little as $5, and with every phone and tablet in the world sporting one, it's extremely short sighted for a webcam not to be included.

There's always people who don't use it, until they do, then it's a pain. I still have a laptop that I use regularly from 2004, basically every device I've had since has had one. If you want people to buy your product, you should build it to work for most people. Especially with all the people finding themselves out of work, your personal laptop needs to be able to support zoom/skype for job interviews

          • @Jackson:

            a disabled driver

Ok you don’t know much about privacy. Just because your closed-source OS is reporting that the driver is disabled, doesn’t mean it actually is.

            • @Blue Cat: That's presumptive that you think I'm using a closed source OS….

Also if you delete the driver, the driver is deleted. Someone would have to hijack your computer to get it going, by then you have bigger problems

              • @Jackson: As long as your BIOS/UEFI is closed source, in theory, you can never be sure what your hardware is doing as long as it is connected to a powersource.
Old ThinkPad with Libreboot is the only way to be sure, however, not really practical in this day and age.

Now, where did I put my tinfoil hat…

        • +4

There probably is one, but only accessible by the CCP

          • @Kanjus: Also accessible by the CIA and associates. You seem to keep forgetting to mention them.

      • Just use an app that lets you use your smartphone as a camera

    • On the plus side, no camera means the CCCP can't see into your bedroom.

      • -1

For sure, CCCP and CIA should stop spying on the mass population.

    • No webcam? The perfect laptop

      • I'm only one zoom meeting away from agreeing with you

  • What's the warranty situation if you run into problems?

    • +30

      electronics recycling bin

    • Unlikely you'll be able to get much out of it

    • +2

I got a refund from these guys twice, one for a faulty product, once half to fix a product that had broken so i'd say good.

      • Refund on a laptop or a USB cable? Ones a good result :)

  • +17

Why buy this when Lenovo ThinkPad Gen 2 is only $100 more with local warranty and Ryzen 5 4500U? It's a big performance increase from the Ryzen 5 3500U, I have both Lenovo Gen 1 and 2 so I do know.

  • +1

A bit expensive for a machine that just runs Fortnite!

  • +3

no webcam across the redmi production line. That killed the deal for me.

    • what? no webcam, that's a crazy omission. cannot buy it in this day and age.

  • +4

Got my redmibook 16 from banggood a while back, best laptop i've ever owned

  • Does it run Crysis?

    • Will it blend?

      • Will it survive a water jet?

        • Is there a chance the track(pad) could bend?

    • Its 2020, Crysis is old hat, the new machine stress king is "Does it run Flight Simulator"

      • What about the remaster?

  • +2

Last Gen CPU, only 8GB of ram, no webcam. Not sure if this is a stock clearance or a deal.

  • +1

    Sorry, not a good deal.

The 512GB 16GB ram version only cost 3599RMB (=720AU$) In JD China
    https://item.jd.com/100012045076.html

    • +1

I'm assuming JD China doesn't ship to Australia so not really comparable to this deal. Edit: Actually looks like you can but the average Australian might find it hard to navigate the site in Chinese

      • +3

They dont ship to AU. Sorry, the following items are restricted items, please return to the shopping cart to modify

    • +1

there is at least 10% or $250 tax on import.

      • Thanks. Good to know it.
My friend bought a monitor from JD China without paying any tax. I don't know how he did it but now looks it's illegal.

  • WTF? No webcam. Strange design choice.

  • +1

My laptop from 2009 had smaller bezels than this

    • huge bezels and no webcam

  • I think there'll be better deals on Ryzen 4000 once Tigerlake comes out

  • There's the 16GB R7 version for $220 more. Not sure if it's what I'd call a deal though.

  • What is this …fortnite? Is it bundled antivirus? (Im a dinosaur) /s

  • While this laptop does have integrated graphics, they are quite powerful and manage to get approximately the same performance as an MX230 (Found in many laptops these days)

    According to this website:
    https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GeForce-MX230-v…

Keep in mind that up to 2GB of the ram will be used by the Vega 8 graphics. Here's a review of this laptop I did a few months back: https://youtu.be/t_EC8jEap9s
