I see KOTOR II, I upvote

For those who haven't played, and need a good Star Wars story after the Disney Trilogy… KOTOR 1&2 are fantastic.

I've been meaning to play the KoTOR sequel. Hard to resist at a historically low cheap price. There's just too much else to play though.

for someone who's never played it but loved Mass Effect and Jade Empire, how does it hold up today? Besides the story is the game still fun, and is the first game essential before the sequel?

KOTOR 1 has an arguably stronger story (I still prefer 2, personally - but they're both excellent).

With actual gameplay, KOTOR 2 wins, hands down (both 'game' aspects like character building and replay-ability; and in 'technical' aspects like high resolution support, mods, achievements etc).

Playing KOTOR 1 is absolutely not necessary to enjoy KOTOR 2 (quite similar to watching the OT films, before watching the PT).

excellent I'm sold and the weekend is sorted, thanks! I'll probably just play 2 with mods

@sleepyowl: I think I differ in opinion here, playing 1 first is absolutely a good idea imo. Lots of references and Kotor 2 even opens with questions about your main character in the first game.

        • It's definitely not essential, I have never played the original but 2 was a great game and I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. Maybe ignorance is bliss though!

I actually have both in Steam already. Think it came as part of a May the 4th special for a few dollars a couple of years ago, haven't given the original a crack yet though.

      • I absolutely love KOTOR and I played it after Mass Effect and Jade Empire (which are sooo awesome games!). Honestly I think it holds up very well, gameplay I loved, story I loved, graphics are of course as it was for the time, but it still worked great for me.

Personally though I felt starting on 1 felt better, its not needed story wise, but I feel the second built upon the first that can make the second a little confusing in playing (not story wise). But this is a very minor thing, I will say though that they're very similar gameplay wise that it doesn't feel like the difference is very big (say graphics wise or what you can do). I guess I loved the first so really recommend also.

        • Alright maybe I'll give the first a shot with some updates mods

    • they were great but after watching a speed runner explain the levelling system i cbf playing the game anymore lol

Just an FYI, these are gonna be free on gamepass soon. As part of the EA Play addition coming at the end of the year

  • Nice thanks OP!

Anyone wanting to play KOTOR II, I would strongly recommend installing the Restored Content Mod. The game was rushed out before Christmas and as such vanilla feels quite… unfinished.

Do not install the droid planet. Just search for TSLRCM.

This is quite simply (with the restored content mod) the best Star Wars game. Jedi Fallen Order may have been a step in the right direction but I doubt we'll ever get anything as good as this again

    • the jedi knight II series were epic too, fallen order looks like a dlc in comparison

      • Still astounds me how Jedi Knight 2 came out in 2002 and Fallen Order in 2019, yet the former still has the better combat system

        • +1

what sets the older games apart is they have big and diverse levels, i watched some fallen order gameplay and all the levels look the same lol

  • +3

KOTOR I & II are my favourite games of all time, everyone deserves to experience these great games.

Before you play this game, PLEASE make sure to go to the steam community workshop and download the KOTOR 2 cut content restored mods. This reintroduces a lot of content that were initially meant to be in the game however was cut out due budget cuts and time constraints before release.

Just FYI, looks like the original KOTOR has the same deal if you want to play them in order: https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/star-wars-knights-of-the-o…
