Please consult with your doctor to verify the following before continue talking this drug!

    • Thanks

I take this drug a few years now…
      Will investigate alternative

    • +1

umm my doctor had me on these for 2 years (higher strength ones) just by chance that doctor was sick one day and I saw another doctor. new doctor said straight away you shouldnt be on these for long term.. then I read about a lawsuits a few years later.. hmmm

    • +1

OK, umm so whats the alternative? This shit sounds bad but without them I'm screwed. I basically cant even lean over let alone lay down without them.

      • You know what the alternative is… surgery.

      • +1

Talk to your own doctor. Some patients actually benefit being on this lifelong.

      • I had it pretty bad for years. to the point where liquid would rise just like a high tide at the back of throat and stay there. I had endoscopy procedure to further investigate , Dr said everything looked okay and from that day onwards I had been cured. I guess the placebo effect was real in my case.

      • Have you tried Apple cider vinegar? This actually worked for me.

  • If you see a Dr, can you get this cheaper with rebate or something?

    • -1

in my understanding, rebates through prescriptions only happen if it's in the PBS list.

      • Not true. The pack of 30 is prescription only, but even private prescriptions (i.e. non PBS) would make it cheaper than buying without a script. Also it's good to keep your doctor updated on medications you are taking

        • i stand corrected!

    • If you have a prescription you can get higher doses, and/or a box with more in it. I've had 40mg prescriptions of 30 for ages. Prices vary for generics but are much better value than this.

Edit: my current box is 30x40mg for $13.

  • All drugs (medications) always end cheaper with a prescription. Go for a higher dose which is even cheaper and cut tablets in halves depending on your 'script.

    • +1

Not all tablets can be cut without affecting their absorption and effect. Nexium cannot be split.

    • That's not true. Ventolin, or Dermaid isn't cheaper with a script (if you are not a health care card holder, or aboriginal, respectively).

Also Nexium 40mg is harder to prescribe, along with lesser repeats under PBS compared to the 20mg.

  • Stocked up at full price… then I got my prescription in the mail shortly after…..
Wasn't sure if these go on sale. I'm new to the drug, recently prescribed by a gastro doc to see if settles some acids reflux/bad guts. So far hasn't done anything (2nd week, am also taking 40mg day)
But scary reading those lawsuits, don't wanna be on for long
    Anyone else tried iberogast ?

    • +1

I tried these and followed the advice of taking it for few weeks but didnt help me…

i even did the helicobacter test, nothing came up…

in the end the doctor told me to stay off caffeine and spicy food for a while which indeed help… i think it was the caffeine that did it…

      • no coffee !!! thats my greatest fears, just bought a new coffee machine as well. but have been contemplating a 1 month detox to reset everything.
but dont want to try just yet until i stick out the Nexium/iberogast routine for at least 8 weeks to see if any help.
I have always felt worse after too many coffees in a day, been back onto morning routine of collagen/glutamine/Vital greens on empty stomach in the morn and feeling better for it, delaying the coffee to 1 hr after awakening.
Gastro says next step would be fodmap to eliminate certain foods if this nexium fails.
i recall the best ive felt in the last year was actually having a big meat lunch and skipping dinner, woke up normal, so maybe fast dinners and less carbs.
Have tried Keto, didnt mind it, my psoriasis flared up though

        • What collagen do you use if you don't mind me asking?

        • coffee and spicy food… all the good stuffs in the world!

i too have a coffee machine at home hence i ended up drinking more coffee than usual…

i bought some decaf as well at some point and switched my tea to rooibos for a while just to reduce caffeine intake…

however, i'm back to consuming coffee daily now but at least i pay more attention when im starting to feel worse in my stomach these days…

          • @meong: aha. my partners Thai so hard to avoid the spice.
yea, ive managed to do just 2 coffees a day, with oat milk. but having 2 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon can feel the guts squirming and throat burning a little.
Rooibos is great, might need to get back on it.
Did the decaf make much difference to stomach?

            • @shonofear: it did….

i went with decaf instead of completely staying away from coffee because i like the whole morning ritual of seeing the espresso shot pouring onto my cup… so it also helped with keeping the habit as well… some decafs were quite nice to drink…

              • @meong: ah man.
now getting nausea after a coffee, somethings gotta change.
have u tried a bit of baking soda in your coffee to try balance out the acidic levels? been reading online and some seems to work.
but decaf is less acidic so might have to try

                • @shonofear: apparently its not the acid in the coffee itself…

its the caffeine that created the extra enzyme in my stomach based on what the doctor said…

so i did try different coffee brewing which did help a little to reduce the acidic level such as pour over (kalita filter) or cold brew but in the end its the caffeine effect that lasted that made my stomach go crazy…

In a country where we get ‘free’ healthcare we should all definitely be consulting our GPs before purchasing any medication
Often times, things like nexium and hayfever medications are a fraction of the price of the stuff you buy off the counter
Plus you get the added bonus of having a physician give you advice!

$8.50 for 20mg/30 tablets with a prescription. The 40mg varieties now require an authority script (your GP needs to call Medicare(?) for approval).

Omeprazole is another similar prescription medication.

  • Yes definitely see a doctor before taking this. I have a 20 mg prescription. Generic prescriptions from my local Amcal are about $13 for a 30 pack. My gastroenterologist said it was necessary for me to take PPIs after a gastroscopy showed how damaged my oesophagus was. Before seeing the doctor, it was getting to the point that some foods ('dry' foods, such as chicken breast and bread) were nearly impossible to swallow. I would prefer not to take the drugs, but the alternative for me is worse.

    • mind disclose what's the cause ?

      • Genetics and diet I suppose. Reducing intake of coffee, chocolate and alcohol helps.

        • -3

Load of garbage. It’s carbs. Try keto for a month and GERD / Acid Reflux disappears.

          • @deelaroo: You do understand how the upper and lower esophageal sphincters work, right? Sometimes they don't work, due to injury and/or age related innerviation and mechanical issues.
Also in some cases, the cells in the stomach that produce acid can be overactive.

All of this stuff is best investigated by a medical professional who specialises in upper GI.

            • @Oofy Doofy: I'm talking about the acid. Ofc keto isn't going to magically tighten up your esophageal sphincters, but if there's no acid its a lot less of an actual issue.

              • @deelaroo: There is always acid. Over eating, specific foods (high fat, deep fried etc) can make heartburn and acid more prevalent, but it's not the whole story. There are specific amino acids in certain types of foods that can make the LES not do it's just appropriately, because they influence muscle innervation.

Some people don't even know they have chronic acid reflux/GERD until they have a gastroscopy.

An ENT worth their salt will check your vocal cords out with a camera that can take high speed images / video and confirm acid is getting to your vocal chords. Usually followed on by a referral to an upper GI doctor/surgeon for further examination.

Anyway, a manometary test will confirm problems for certain, without any other diagnostics. If that test shows problems, then its scope time.

You can be sweet for decades of your life, then hit midlife and your body starts failing, the slow decline.

I'm sure the keto diet is useful for some people, it has its merits when used as a tool for certain medical conditions, but the human brain evolved because we were able to source large amounts of plant carbohydrates to fuel brain development.

        • for me I put down to hidden stress even though I didnt feel stressed. strange one.
