Is it legal to use on road in Australia?

      nup.

true to your username, they are not ADR approved.

I've seen so many older cars with LEDs retrofitted, and more often than not, they're ungodly bright. Are they legal?

    • +3

nope and potentially quite dangerous to other drivers

      • +2

as suspected. why can't they be taken off the road - it's so blinding, and to make matters worst, in my experience they're usually driven by absolute hoons.

      • Only when the housing is reflectors and not projectors. That's the main difference between blinding oncoming traffic and the light cut off adjustment

It's so frustrating. Just looking out for themselves. Here I am keeping my highbeams off so I don't blind oncoming traffic but i'm in a situation where I kind of need them …then a 4wd drives at me with these silly bright LEDs.

      • +7

Agreed, just put a mirror in your back windshield, should let them know what's up.

      • my thoughts exactly

    Deal should be deleted

this type of h4 style is not a direct replacement for the incandescent bulb, the light is not in the same location and the low beam throws a very wide beam blinding others and REDUCING the throw distance. the correct LED replacement should look like this https://assets.kogan.com/images/vicoffroad/VOR-V10AU-H4-LF_2…

  • +1

Probably should use the disclaimer "OFF ROAD USE ONLY"

  • other than being illegal, at least do some research if they are indeed actually any better than your replacement halogen
if you want to trust it there are places like https://www.bulbfacts.com/led-kits/recommended/
even looking through their charts https://www.bulbfacts.com/led-kits/chart/ in the budget section you are probably worse off with LED

6500K is nowhere near natual light at all. At this colour temp, it provides nothing more than poor Ra (google color rendering index if you don't know what Ra is), poor visibility in rain/snow, but only delusive feeling of "brightness" by dazzling human's eyes, bringing absolutely unnecessary danger to other road users, as well as the driver him/herself. This really should be banned on road by all means. They do look bright, but that's merely because human eyes are particularly more sensitive to the light when its wavelength is within a specific range compared to light in low colour temp, thus makes you feel "very bright". It doesn't help in the real world at all. On the contrary, dazzling the oncoming drivers' eyes will absolutely put you both in trouble. Go for a test drive with a car whose headlights are at a colour temp of 6500K or even higher in a real foggy/rainy/snowy day and you'll find the anwswer with your own eyes by barely seeing nothing.

    • 5250k is about best you usually get with LED, thats generally what factory LEDs run

  • Unsafe for other drivers and likely illegal to use on the road. Can't believe it's being sold here.

    • same as you can go and buy them from supercheap or repco. it is what it is.

    • Some halogen are considered illegal too. Aus is a dam joke
