Extension Leads/Cords That Come in Reels

I just noticed something today because I was on the hunt for around for an extension lead of around 5M for the garage. There is very little in the way of househould extension leads that come in reels. During my search, I found household usage leads will easily come in 15M even 20M lengths (not typical but they're easily available) but as naked cords. Typically, I can find reels of extension leads, but in heavy duty/tradie usage scenarios and usually beginning in lengths of 25M.

Best I could find was :

eBay

When I was in the US, reels were a common format for extension leads, and from what I can gather on the internet, likewise in the UK. In my experience in three asian countries, these were also quite common.

Does anyone know why it seems to be the exception rather than the norm here in Oz?

  • Reels get stuck and they're bulky. It's just an extra complexity that you have to pay for and lug around.

You seem to know a lot about electricity. Is it okay to plug four 60W lights into a single power cube? It adds up to 240W total at max brightness, and Australian electicity is 240V so it matches the maximum yeah?

      • 240w at 240v is 1 amp. The standard electrical sockets and power cords are rated to 10 amp.

        • Sweet, I can buy 36 more of these lights and use them all one socket.

          • @AustriaBargain: Good luck finding your 36 socket power board.

@[Deactivated]: Just daisy chain the power cubes of course. Cube into cube into cube, like a human centipede, but with cubes.

It can be dangerous to draw high power on an extension cord that is rolled up tightly (as it would be in a reel). Consumers are price sensitive, so extension cords for consumers won't be heavy duty. Tradies are probably less likely to draw high power continuously, and with the extra cost that they pay, they get a higher quality product.

You can buy empty reels and put whatever lead you want on them but for 5m, why bother? Coil it up and hang it on a hook or something.

    • That's certainly doable, and TBH, probably the route I'm going to take. I was just surprised that something I took for granted as commonplace elsewhere would actually be quite rare here.

  • I've had this one for ten plus years
it's a bit fiddly to wind in/out (kids struggle)
no idea how much I paid, certainly not $65

    • Yep, I've seen them too. They fall under the "heavy duty" class that I was looking at. Also a bit longer and pricier than what I had in mind. I only need around 4.5 meters and only need it once in a while thus me searching for the household type reel.

      But thanks for sharing.

Here you go, Bunnings to the rescue: CordTech 5m 4 Socket Home And Office Cassette Reel $16.97.
    Link: https://www.bunnings.com.au/cordtech-5m-4-socket-home-and-of…

    • Holy smokes. I can't actually follow the link because for some reason it will just send me to the landing page, but looks like I will physically check out my local bunnings! Thanks heaps. From your description, it's exactly what I was searching for, at a price I'm comfortable with.

Strangely enough, even pasting the exact description fails to generate any hits on their webpage but since you found it, at least I can show the staff.

      Cheers!

      • Try searching the Bunnings' site for extension leads. Came up in the top row, in the second page of results for me.

        • If you're asking at the local Bunnings, the stock/item number is I/N: 0188522.

          • @DashCam AKA Rolts: Next time I pop in, I'll remember to ask if this item number is in stock and see if their system will say yes.

Thanks again for the help. Much appreciated!

        • You're a legend. Just got back from my local and they DO have it.

Funnily enough no amount of changing search strings on their website will make it show up! But they physically had 3 different lengths of this on the shelf.

Even if I just input the brand cordtech as a search string, it just shows me 3 other products that were not this. local search result

When I change my local store to Adelaide though, it will successfully show the items. I guess their stock system and their customer facing system still have some issues.

for some reason it will just send me to the landing page

I think that means that it's not available in your location/state. It does it for me too. The person who posted the link appears to be in Adelaide.

Better to ring your local Bunnings store than just go there and find out it's not available.

Edit: The code you need to ask about is I/N: 0188522. I just changed my "local store" to postcode 5000, and I can now see the product.

  • In a similar vein (cord), I've seen someone in the US with a hanging retractable power cord in their garage. Wish they have them here, maybe some laws prohibiting them here?
