WD 3.5" Purple 14TB WD140PURZ Surveillance HDD $549 + Free Delivery @ PCByte

90

This is a great price for a Western Digital HDD and works out to just over $39 per TB.

I'm currently running 2x 6TB WD Purples (spanned) in my desktop PC for my CCTV system and after 5 years of 24/7 use one has died.

My current setup has 13 cams all recording at 1080p @ 30 FPS, which gives me just under 4 weeks of storage before the footage is overwritten, so this new drive will help to push that out even further.

Wish my hikvision took more than 8tb drives. Upvoted!

  • Are you running Blue Iris?

2 out of 2 of my 4TB Purples died after a couple of years. Would not recommend.

    • I thought the WD purples had a high failure rate previously, however when you look into it further they're on par with the others given the environment they're used in.

I think the best thing to prolong a HDD used for CCTV is to get the biggest capacity you can afford to try and reduce the amount of constant overwriting that occurs with CCTV systems. How many days/weeks did your storage provide before being over ridden?

The 1TB WD Green that came with my NVR died on day 1. Switched to a 1TB WD Purple and it's been running 24/7 for the past 5 years.

Not saying this applies to you but I hear failure rates On these drives is higher as people use them in PC’s and don’t disable drive sleep. These are designed to spin 24x7

This store has repeatedly taken money in exchange for items, waited a week for me to contact them about it, informed me that they're sorry and the supplier will give it to them in three weeks, waited four weeks for another message, informed me that they sorry but it wont be coming and asked me if I want a refund or to buy something else.

They appear to be getting free credit by scamming customers in other words.

  • @Diji … Like most online retails in Oz, they probably "drop-ship" (don't physically hold stock and arrange shipment direct to purchaser from the supplier), and further to save costs they may not reserve advance stock with the supplier.

This has been further exacerbated during COVID-19 by some wholesale suppliers showing stock stock as on hand when in fact stock may still be in transit from overseas manufacturers/suppliers, being still on board delayed ships or customs clearance at seaports/airports.

  • Anyone know a good hard drive to store media files on my PC that wont be louder than my fans at 1500rpms?

    • 20db is quiet, but 1500prm tells nothing about sound.

You could use WD Red (non PRO) just for storing files. They aren't fast spinners and not loud.
