Cheapest plan that lets me get e-sim for watch?

I'm after the cheapest plan that lets me get an e-sim for my watch.
Data doesn't matter too much, 5gb/month is plenty.

I don't mind what network, but as I understand it, only Telstra and Optus offer this feature, is that right?

Thanks!

I’m with Optus for my phone with a sim only plan, and asked them to add a service for my watch which was $5 a month. I then just said I didn’t want to pay for it and after a little back and forth I got the watch add on for free.

    • They don't do $5 sim anymore. I wanted one for my iPad.

      • I think he is referring to the $5 per month for an e-sim/number from Optus so you can get calls, etc, on your watch.

      • try dodo prepaid

No network in Australia provides a standalone plan just for Apple Watch, you need to have it as an add-on to a postpaid phone plan.

Telstra OneNumber eSIM is $5/month, Optus Numbershare eSIM is $10/month and Vodafone NumberSync eSIM is $5/month.

Telstra and Vodafone have no data and use the phone plans quota, Optus comes with 1gb data.

Plus the cost of your plan, I’d say Vodafone $35/month postpaid phone would be cheapest with NumberSync, making it $40/month.

    • Optus is $39 + $10 = $49 and Telstra is $55 + $5 = $60. These are for their cheapest postpaid plan that supports adding a watch eSIM. There are other possibly cheaper plans, but that’s all I could find that mentioned eSIM add on in their contract.

      • Wow, I guess I'll leave LTE turned off for at least another year then! :(

Any one know if this might have changed in the last year and what the lastest best options might be?

If you only need to use mobile data on the watch then it can be done very cheaply. You will have a separate mobile number for the watch, so you can still call / text using the other mobile number. I've used this method successfully on my galaxy watch 4. The method will be different if you have another brand/model of watch, so it may not work.

Simply buy a Vodafone prepaid SIM card, and recharge on the pay and go $10 plan. You must sign up for auto recharge to get 1GB data. The plan lasts for 60 days, and includes 1GB data ($5/month, 0.5GB/month), and has $10 credit for calls / text. Alternatively, if you need more data, you can get a 365 day plan for $250 with 150GB data ($20.8/month, 12.5GB/month). Sometimes there will be discounts on these plans. Once you have activated the SIM card, request a SIM swap to esim in my vodafone on your computer. You will get a QR code and confirmation code.

These steps only apply for Galaxy Watch 4. In the galaxy wearable app, open the hidden menu by clicking on about galaxy wearable, then clicking on the heading galaxy wearable (above the version number) 5 times. Then click on test esim feature, and enable testmode and QR testmode. This will allow you to set up the esim using a QR code instead of trying to activate through the carrier. Finally, go to the add mobile plan section and follow the instructions.

You should now have cheap mobile data for your watch without paying insane amounts for a postpaid phone plan.

      • Would this work with other providers besides Vodafone since there are some smaller providers doing esim now?

      • I wonder if this will work with Apple Watch!?! Has anyone successfully used this method to hook up an esim on Apple Watch?

TruPhone is not taking new customers :(

  • u can get a cheap apple watch plan with Truphone for $9.99 a month or $99 year
but this option DOES NOT let you port your number across as it is a stand alone plan

    https://go.truphone.com/plans/AU

    • and you will have to use the family setup mode for your apple watch

      • … it all sounds great until you realise you cannot use Apple Wallet payments with family setup

  • You can do the vodafone $40/month plan + $5 Numbersync for = $45/month with 40GB

    • I've been looking myself and this does seem to be the cheapest option. Crazy how expensive this is tbh.

    • Noob question. Does this plan allow you to use the 40GB data on both the phone and smart watch? Or data only on the phone, and call & text on both the phone and smart watch?

      • +1

At least with Vodafone in my experience it allows you to use bioth data and call and text on the watch, for the $5. Here's the link if you need more info Vodafone Numbersync

        • Thanks!

Sorry another noob question if you know the answer. Do we need an esim service to be able to activate Vodafone Numbersync?

          Edit:
I am reading Step 4 in “ How do I sign up to Vodafone NumberSync™?” here, so sounds like you do need an esim service.

          • @ilovefullprice: So how it works, is that you have your main service on your phone (either ESim or physical) and then in your watches respective app you set up the mobile service. Currently on both Samsung and apple it uses an ESim that is sent to the watch over Bluetooth, that is automatically done as part of the setup (that I know of). Then it was just added on my account and the next bill.

            • @rupp1e: Will Vodafone Numbersync work with a prepaid annual plan ? I got the 150gb deal advertised here earlier.

              • +1

@arcticmonkey: Unfortunately it won't work with your prepaid, Numbersync through Vodafone is only valid on a postpaid plan as it is seen as an add-on.

  • Hi guys

Anyone had anyluck with kogan mobile and linking the phone and wearable?

Currently on the optus $49 plan and fed up with paying so much.

Surely with esim takking off now it shouldnt be much longer to find some deals

  • Anyone got a success to a cheaper option to make cellular watch working independently for calling? I got Galaxy watch 5

  • I'm considering https://www.au.jumpysim.com/ for a watch as an independent plan.

They are using the Telstra 4G/3G network.

    Unlimited calls & texts.

    2.5GB: 13.75/m (12 months pre-paid)
    1.0GB: 16.99/m

    • So does this work with an apple watch? The cheapest on their plan is $20.

      • unfortunately, no.
Once again Australia proves to be one of, if not THE most backwards western country in the world when it comes to technology

        • after further research, seems like you can actually use these plans on other watches, or at least I could not find anywhere on the Spacetalk webiste precise information stating the opposite. But geez it costs so much. $165/year and you will have a different number on your watch then on your mobile. total cr*p

  • Any updates on this? So only Telstra, Vodafone and Optus offer synced plans? Thanks

    • looks like so.. I bought a pixel watch LTE today only to find out Kogan eSim does not support smartwatches. I am gutted.

  • I have found that the cheapest and easiest solution for this is amaysim - at least it worked well with my Pixel Watch LTE. Got a $10 pay as you go but could switch to a $60/year plan + $10/GB data (I imagine a watch would not consume much data) if I find the pay as you go thing is not sustainable.

You won't have the same number as your phone however you can try and automate some call forwarding to your watch if your phone mobile carrier allows it. Kogan mobile and most other carriers do not allow it, or allow only if you pay extra.

The only one I found that allows for free call forwarding (although untested at this stage) is Woolworths mobile. With it you can set up an automation on your android phone (with Tasker or similar) to turn on airplane mode when your watch disconnects from your phone, and set up call forwarding to your watch number when the phone is unreachable (as it is in airplane mode). Then when the watch reconnects to your phone, airplane mode switches off and you are back to the normal use.
