I've heard a lot of complaints about this laptop unlike what reviewers are saying.
Anyone had any experience with them before?

    • The hinge on my xps 9360 detached from the base plate of my laptop, pretty much rendering it useless at the moment. Now I am not sure if this "ailment" occurred due to the fact that my laptop fell or something when at school, but like it is kinda inconvenient. Other than that, an the awful webcam placement, (on my model at least, I think they may have fixed it on this model) the dell xps series has treated me extremely well.
Not really sure why OP is calling them "niche" lol they are like super freaking common an extremely popular an have been for many years, an for good reason as well - they are fantastic.

Private school eh? Common among the privileged I'd say.

        • That's a really odd judgement/leap to make.
I got my 9360 around 3.5 years ago for ~$1400. Not really a privileged price point.

You don't know if steve9999 is at high school (private or public), primary school, university… could be an adult doing part time study outside their job.

      • I have the same model, but I've had no issue with the hinge so maybe it is from the drop.

Agree, the webcam placement is awful (understandable for design constraints), other than that it's great!
I replaced the WiFi card with an Intel, but that was just because I was a preference thing and only cost me $20.

    • Where did you hear these complaints? As a general rule, people complain online a lot more than they give positive reviews, so there is heavy bias towards complaints for any product.
I've owned a couple of XPS's over the last 5 years or so which I use 10 hours+/day and found them to be excellent. I might even upgrade to this one as this is a great deal.

      • That's right but sometimes you see more negative reviews than usual. That was the case with xps.

        • Was it? What is considered the normal amount of of negative reviews so I know for next time? How far from this normal range as a percentage is considered acceptable in your opinion? How many reviews do you have read before being satisfied that you have a reasonable sample amount? What factor of error do you use?

    • I've got 25 XPS 13's (various models bought in the last 3 years). Of those:

      • One 2yo 9360 was boot looping and required a mainboard swap (was out of warranty, but Dell were nice enough to sell me a new support plan for cheaper than the part)
      • One 3yo XPS 13 2-in-1 needed a replacement battery (was dying when unplugged for 20 minutes), replaced myself for $100

Overall very happy, and my developers only complaint is that the camera is on the bottom of the screen on most of them… and that the RAM is soldered so they can't upgrade from 16-32GB (which I just did on my XPS 15)

  • Haha about the prices going up .. nah they are going down .. new model releasing already with significantly better Intel cpu .. much faster cpu, and oncpu gpu > 200% performance, and thunderbolt 4 I believe ..

I mean this promotion ends this Friday 7pm and price will go back up

      it's just a fact, mate

then next promotion will come around, no one knows when, and prices will go down again, and maybe lower than now

but that's true about anything tech, isn't it captain Obvious?

      • +2

Yeah sorry maybe my tone is too irreverent, no harm intended, just letting everyone know the new model is already released and it's a significant improvement, so people can factor in their assessment of the price!

        Sorry for tone mate!

        • all good :)

it's the fundamental idea of an outlet, selling previous generation models mostly

and true, with each subsequent generation released these units should be discounted further

      1. This link is Dell US
      2. The cheapest i7 w/ 16GB RAM is $2124USD ie over $3000 AUD once you include shipping

The point I'm trying to make is about the processor - the next gen is out, and it's a gen that actually makes a difference, unlike many intel gens in recent history

Note the new ones have i7-1165G7 not 1067G7 .. and big difference in cpu speed which goes to 4.7 Ghz not 3.9 Ghz

That's because apparently intel has finally got 10nm working properly .. integrated graphics performance more than twice the speed and CPU about 20% better

        https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/196597/…

        • Sure, but at almost twice the price…

          • -1

@1st-Amendment: Initial releases are often priced at the absolute peak of their price, manufacturers often try to clear out stock just before a new model comes out, and it's up to the buyer to decide what is important for them in terms of the price, features etc.

However many people may not have been aware that this is the situation, that it's clearing old stock .. so now they are and can consider price, and value to them, accordingly.

Personally I won't buy these XPS lines at their inflated prices, I bought a 9550 already and had three major problems with it .. they are not worth it at multi-thousand price levels, the quality just isn't there!

  • Stunning but small display make sure you have 20/20 vision… and WTF orders these with Windows Home?

    • +2

      Whats wrong with windows home?

    • this is a mystery really, why all those high performing panels with wide colour space come in these ridiculous resolutions mostly

and nothing wrong with windows home. there should be just one windows called WINDOWS the rest is marketing to make you pay more.

    • What does Windows Home not do that you need it to do?

      • +1

        Bitlocker, remote desktop connection.

Granted, dell charges more for the Pro upgrade than bricks and mortar reseller builders but still, for a "premium" laptop you'd expect the better Operating System.

        • Win Pro is not better, it just has more things that most people don't need. This is Oz_Bargain not OZ_pay_more_for_stuff_I_never_use.

      • Domain Join and Bitlocker are most of what I need. Want our staff to use Azure AD for local account.

    • I always order these with Windows Home, only takes 20 minutes to upgrade them to Pro (works out cheaper via Volume Licence's than the markup to the next model given the Home edition's are generally the ones to go on sale).

    2k for a refurb laptop???

    • Please provide link to a cheaper and better spec'd laptop… Plus it is $1819…. Not really $2K.

  • Have had my XPS 9360 13 for almost 3 years now, never had an issue, reliable compared to owning hp’s & compaqs. Dell still provide update and support after warranty which is helpful.
Only due for a battery replacement soon as it approaching 3 years, no complaint with it as this is common with any laptop.

  • I have this exact spec of this model from work.
So many issues such as heating up and suddenly dying, wifi dropping, usb-c connection issues (now solved in recent bios but couldn't use usb-c monitors for few months) and so many.
One of three laptops in my team had constant blue screen on arrival as well.

    • +4

Sounds like someone has been doing something to their laptop to get out of doing work? This was common in my workplace years ago. A paper clip here, a paper clip there…. call IT support, replacement came next day and meanwhile they sat there having tea and biscuits and chatting on the phone…

  • No really familiar with windows machines but why is this a niche product?

    • +1

Pretty much top of the line business machine and overkill for the general home user who has less cash to splash

      • Except these are consumer line not business line ..

Xps ones are thin and light, powerful and also good screen, however they are flaky as crap with many people finding a wide range of problems with them.

The business lines are not so thin and light or nice screens for equivalent money, but more more likely to just work without problems.

    • +1

Because most people don't spend $3k on a laptop to watch Youtube on :)

  • REFURBISHED

    • +1

Noted in the title as an abbreviation: Refurb

  • I specced a new one of these for a friend.

They say it does email and internet good.

Budgets - use them or lose them.

  • I'm a little worried about buying refurb. Has anyone had experience with this?

    • +2

Refurb means someone bought it new, complained about something and sent it back. The shop then does a full diagnostic and replaces anything faulty and resells it at a discount under manufacturer warranty. I buy tons of stuff like this, never had a problem.

      • cheers mate!

      • +1

Refurb also often means it failed the initial QA in the manufacture process, was sent back through, fixed if necessary and then re-tested and sold
May have never left the factory

        • Thanks lads but I decided against one after doing a bit of research and finding how many issues people were having with the 9300. Issues with the fans, flickering screen, Bluetooth and wifi, etc.

Most of which seem to be due to Dell or 3rd party software and can be resolved with a fresh install of Windows but it just doesn't seem worth the hassle.

          • @revolutionismyname: Yep that’s where I landed too.

Off to Apple I go, less of a gamble and I know it’ll last. Still rocking a 2012 iMac that runs like a dream after a fresh install.

  • Depending how important the screen is to you, this may not be the best deal. At this size FHD is more than enough for most people (our guys all have 2 monitors 90%+ of the time they are using the machine)

For example, I bought the new 7390 (10th gen 6 core 16GB, FHD screen) a month ago for $2000 (15% online discount) and have ~$200 coming to me from shopback, and was given a $240 Dell Advantage voucher.

I'm also pretty sure you can't use Dell Advantage vouchers against Dell Outlet refurbs.

    • +1

I did quite a lot of research on this, the FHD model in Australia is non-touch and matte finish, with a plastic surround to the screen.

The UHD/4K model that’s on sale here for $1819 is glossy touch screen with full glass across the whole panel, no plastic surround.

Overseas has the option of a touch-screen glossy FHD model with the full glass treatment. This might be the sweet spot, but alas not on offer here.

Personally I hate matte, it’s dull and not very sharp.
