eBay Fees - It Is What It Is? or Are There Special Workarounds

I haven't sold on ebay in years, have mainly been using gumtree/fb marketplace.

But some of my items aren't selling, so thought might be time to give ebay a go.

I had a look at the fees however, its 10.9% of the final price (including postage), plus paypal will take 2-3%…

I guess that's the way it is these days with the high fees, or do people have any ways around it such as this one:

they often have deals like "sell 3 items for $1". need to keep an eye out in your "messages" inbox on ebay (a lot don't come as emails).

As singingwolf said ebay usually have promos for selling, like sell first 5 items for free n such. You usually get emails from ebay. HOWEVER, ebay being ebay there are T&C's that are pretty strict and to be honest sometimes are a pain in the butt to monitor… esp for higher value items.

I haven't sold on ebay in years, have mainly been using gumtree/fb marketplace.

I also sell a majority of 2nd hand and newer items via Gumtree for years and haven't had much issue… apart from the regular scammer trying to scam me lol but have since sold a few items via ebay (sunglasses, headphones etc) and took up some of their selling offers due to COVID-19 here in Melbs making trading on gumtree a bit more difficult.

  • As above, wait until they offer deals. They usually have list for free offer, I just had a couple of sell for free offers and get 10% of sale price in vouchers offer (max $50 per item). Just sold a couple of items 1 for $600 the other for $75, cost me nothing apart from paypal fee for one (other was cash), and got $57 in ebay vouchers.
Have a look in your selling overview area to see what offers you have.

I believe you could import a listing from Gumtree to eBay and not pay any fee. However, it is limited to 2 listings a month.

    Or are there special workarounds

Use multiple user Id and wait for free insert and FVF listings.

  • Since eBay switched on their Managed Payment System most sellers are captured by the MPS. Under the MPS eBay no longer use PayPal and capture the full commission for themselves, depending on the value of the item it will be around 13%-15%

Facebook marketplace is free and I've had alot of success there.
Ebay fee's just eat up so much nowadays
Plus if you get shafted by the buyer, you still have to pay the fees and must fight to get it back - just not worth it

  • Don't set up automatic fee payment. Create new account.
