Hi, it looks like Lenovo has finally allocated AU stock of this unit versus the U.S. stock from the Amazon deals I posted before. The retail store is selling this unit at around $2699, but you can obtain it from the Lenovo Education store for $1879 delivered. Shipping time, at the time of posting the deal is 6 to 9 days, but could blow out. Because it is local stock it is covered by AU warranty vs the imported deal.

So this and the HP Omen 15 4800H 1660ti are front runners in terms of thermal management. Seems to beat the Dell G7 17 i7-10750H 2070 and Dell G5 15 5505 SE 4800H 5600M.

      • +2

Dell seems to be infamous for poor thermal management. It's pretty much mentioned as a negative in just about every review I've seen of the Dell gaming line-up.

      • ye but where do you get the hp omen 1660ti :(

        • Yeah I'm waiting for it. Chatted with HP and the 4600h sold out straight away. It will be next year before more stock comes in. No news about the 4800h though.

      • The 1660Ti is a lot worse than the 2070 for gaming though, particularly with raytracing becoming more common.

  • How would this compare to ps5 i wonder ?

    • What specifically are you referring to that you need a comparison between a gaming laptop and a pre-order console? Technically they both use a 2nd gen AMD Ryzen CPU but it diverges from there.

  • +1

which one is better Omen 15 or Legion 5 (Ryzen 7 Variant)?
Is this a good deal or should I be waiting for BlackFriday deal?

    • Depends on your needs. The Legion is supposed to have better cooling and allow the 4800H to boost higher for a more sustained period, but it's bigger. The Omen is more compact and does not have numeric keypad. The Omen also has a bigger battery in Au vs the Legion. Unfortunately the larger capacity battery for the Legion is not available in Au. Buying now or later depends on demand. I bought a S540 13 with a 4800U for a slightly higher cost and got it in 10 days. It is slightly cheaper now but the wait time is 8 weeks.

      • The Omen has one of the best thermal management setups this year. Multiple videos on YouTube praise the thermals. The Legion gets favourable reviews too but I haven’t seen any comparison which says the Legion is better at thermals.

        • The Legion 5 cooling system in performance mode allows a TDP of 69w. This is just short 72w allowed by the Tongfang whitebook chassis, like the XMG Core 15. The Tongfang chassis is viewed as the best at the moment for cooling. The fans on the Legion also are quite quiet in performance mode, whilst the Omen's fans do get quite audible when the CPU and GPU are pushed.

          • @shellshocked: Cool. Would like to see a comparison between the two. The Omen just felt a bit nicer in terms of overall finish to me. The only reason I didn’t buy the 4800h variant of the Omen with the 1650ti was the screen was duller and of lower quality. You need to step up to the 1660ti or 2060 models for the better screen. But these two are pretty much the only decent 4800h alternatives at the moment. You can’t find stock for the Omen anywhere.

  • link doesnt work for me

    • The website site does say at the moment, that they are "experiencing extremely high volumes."

      • it's put me in the waiting room for 30 mins already

          Looks to be working again

  • I have this laptop and bought it cheaper here. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BB9RWXD/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_fab_…. US warranty. For some reason I got also $80 back from Amazon because of an error in pricing so my total was $1620. No RGB keyboard though.Original post here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/563103.

    • +1

US warranty is quite useless though.

Probably cheaper to pay lenovo for out of warranty repairs in Australia.

      • I have seen mixed feedback on the US warranty although the system looks well built to last with no issues for the first year at least :). Anyways everyone can choose what suit them best.

    • +4

Considering 3 years premium support I reckon this price is better.

  • Anyone know if Shopback reward work on the education store? Each time I click on Shopback then click to education store it opens a new window so not sure the click is caught.

    • +2

"Purchases through Lenovo Education store page are ineligible for cashback"
It's on the DON'Ts section on the Shopback page: https://www.shopback.com.au/lenovo

      • I was gonna say, following the Cashrewards link reveals this similar term: "Purchases made through Lenovo's student store, staff discounts, corporate deals, and negotiated offers (phone/email/chat) are ineligible for cashback."
        From: https://www.cashrewards.com.au/lenovo

  • Before purchasing, it's worth noting that this model is available overseas with an RTX 2060 for only a little more than the 1660TI. The 2060 performs slightly better, but also supports a couple of additional features — namely raytracing and DLSS. If those things are of interest to you, it may be worth holding off to see if they bring the 2060 to the AU store too.

    • You could get the Intel version with the 2060 for $1599 in the Amazon Prime sale. I just received mine yesterday!

I don't think its worth waiting for the 2060 AMD to come to Australia simply because of the huge premium you'll pay.

      • Lucky you! I saw that when there were 3 left in stock, spent all of a minute bringing up the Lenovo store in another tab to double check it was a good deal, then went back to lock it in only to find them all gone, haha. Was kicking myself the rest of the sale for that since it was by far the best deal I personally saw on there the whole time. Are you happy with it?

        • Very happy with it so far, thermals and performance are amazing.

About to do a complete wipe though, my laptop feels dirty as it came with McAfee preinstalled.

          • @samfisher5986: The amount of crap pre-installed on my Dell laptop was alarming. It came with McAfee and a bunch of popup ads that were actual programs installed on my computer, timed to open automatically after a day or two and bug me to purchase software.

    • Based on PSREF, there is a 2060 version ANZ bound. However based on this link it misses out on the 3 year premium warranty upgrade of the 1660ti version from 1 Year Depot.

      https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Legion/Lenovo_Legion_5_15AR…

      • Good find! Strange about the warranty though, you think they'd be more likely to bundle that with the more premium product. They make a lot of strange choices in their ready-to-buy configurations, though.

Side note, check out the right-most offering on the Legion 5Pi at the moment: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5… absolute steal, am I right?

        • Ha Ha! That's a major typo. Just $110k

  • Does anyone have a student code I can use?

    Thanks.

  • Anyone know what the battery is like on this?

    • "Here’s what we got on our review unit, with the screen’s brightness set at around 120 nits (~60 brightness).

      12 W (~7+ h of use) – text editing in Google Drive, Quiet Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
      7.5 W (~10 h of use) – 1080p fullscreen video on Youtube in Edge, Quiet Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
      7 W (~11 h of use) – Netflix fullscreen in Edge, Quiet Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
      15 W (~5-6 h of use) – browsing in Edge, Balance Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON."

From Ultrabook review of the 1650ti version, 60Hz screen, with 80wh battery

      https://www.ultrabookreview.com/39830-lenovo-legion-5-review…

The version in AU should be approximately 1 to 2hrs less battery life with the 60wh battery at a similar spec. Though the 144hz screen and 1660ti will draw more power on the higher spec AU version.

  • +1

so what is the deal with laptops currently, how come everything is so out of whack.. is it cause of short supply? (Barely any 1660ti laptops, 1660ti g14 with qhd -_- why qhd whyyyy)

    • Short supply AND higher demand due to COVID.

The 1660Ti is being phased out but the 2000 series are difficult to find in AU for a good price as they run out of stock overseas so quickly.

  • +2

Thanks OP pulled the trigger on this one. Not quite as good as some of the deals recently, but AU stock, really solid reviews and nice to get a decent Ryzen 1660Ti. Will do me nicely !

    • And how about that 3yr warranty?!

    • Well I decided to wait a bunch of days and put the detail of "6 to 9 days" to ship to the test, and now I'll be waiting "more than 8 weeks" for mine.

If you or anyone else is having second thoughts, feel free to cancel your order and tell lenovo I want it sooner 😅

      • +1

I too put through an order last week when it said 6-9 days shipping but now my order status shows January 2021 delivery. That’s ridiculous, reckon I can cancel the order and get a refund?

        • +2

Although, I've never ordered from Lenovo nor Dell before I have followed previous deals and their comments etc. Anyway, a refund shouldn't be an issue.

Sorry to hear about the blowout date =(.

        • Oh man! So I'm not alone. I won't say I'm happy to wait. But I am willing. Just shits me that had I just bought it Saturday night when I was eyeballing it, I'd likely have a closer ETA. Then again, after reading your message, maybe not.

          • +1

@JownehFixIT: I feel you bro. I bought it thinking I’d receive it in a week or two but guess not. I spoke with their customer care and they said there’s no ETA yet. I’ve emailed them requesting a refund. I reckon there’ll be more sales closer to Xmas hence I don’t want to pay for something now and not be able to enjoy it. Don’t you think there will be better specced laptops in 1-2 months for the same price?

            • @Reggii: I'm honestly not sure what other Ryzen 7 4800H or similar laptops are slated to come out in the coming months.

All I know is after months of looking at reviews and YouTuber's impressions of new Ryzen 4000 lappies, this one was the best around $2000 AUD mark. Dave2d, Jarrod's Tech, and codeHusky all rate it, the cooling seems to be the best you can get for a new Ryzen 7 4800H laptop, and bang for buck (thanks to this sale) is right on target.

Others I'd been contemplating include the Zephyrus G14 but all GPU options are either GTX 1650s or only recently a model with 1660 ti paired with a 1440p 60hz display 🤦‍♂️ whyyyy!?

Also the Infinity O5 4R7R6 888 was the closest I came to really wanting to buy. But I think it's got a 48Wh battery or something silly. And not a 3yr warranty that's for sure!

Good luck finding your unicorn lappy 🦄💻

              • +1

@JownehFixIT: fwiw This pushed out to Jan21 for me…so will be cancelling…due to 'unforseen supply issues'.

They did offer me a laptop bag as a sweetener but I am cancelling…

                Paul

                • @thecraw: Oh no! The chat person specifically said to me it could be 8-9 weeks but no longer.

@thecraw What date did you place your order? Mine was purchased on Wednesday 21st October, so a week ago. Order status hasn't changed at all in this time.

@Reggii What date did you place your order? It does seem really strange to hand over close to $2k with nothing to show for it for three months. I can't think of any other purchase I'd be totally happy to pay the full amount up front for, and then wait months…

                • @thecraw: They just offered me either https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/cases-… or https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/cases-…

Which is all fine and dandy. But I don't know if I'll wait. Might cancel and get an Asus Zephyrus G14 instead… Totally different form factor. But way better battery life and portability.

  • Has anyone ordered and received this yet? Was the 6-9 days til shipping a figment of Lenovo's imagination?

    • mines now showing will arrive in Feb next year wtf.
The support guy was completely useless and just tells me he'll email someone and won't put me through to anyone else

      • +1

I had a similar experience after being directed by online chat to a particular post-sales email address, and the post-sales guy couldn't find anything at all and just forwarded my email on to the right place. Talk about a runaround.

Eventually someone apparently named Cookie came back with "still in production due to an unforeseen parts shortage. Waiting from our plant to update the date for this order to be shipped." jeez, no wonder they didn't want to quote me an actually delivery time frame.

Their options for resolution of my issue were
        1) retain order and get a free bag
        2) pick another laptop
        3) cancel order

After replying yesterday, "please cancel", they've confirmed the cancellation, with a refund in 8-10 business days.

I was looking forward to this beast a lot, mainly excited by the price to performance and the sheer bargain value of it honestly. But I bought an Asus Zephyrus G14 GA401IU-HE092T (Ryzen 7 4800HS, GTX 1660ti, full HD 120hz display) instead for many hundreds more dollars. Ordered yesterday arvo, picked today and tracking provided already with status "ready to send".

It's bitter-sweet, but I've been ogling a G14 with decent gpu and still the FHD 120hz panel for ages. It's not available in Aus so grabbed from pbtech in NZ for just under $2500 AUD. I hope to have no regrets. If this thread is still chugging in a week (and I'm not too busy with the G14 😏) I'll come back and let people know how it goes!

  • +1

must be only 1 guy working there, my reply was also from Cookie.
I'm going to keep the order in for now and see what comes up on black friday
