How Long Should I Leave My Car on Idle for When I'm Not Driving It Anytime Soon

Hi OzBargain, so I have a friend who lives in the USA and with their interesting COVID situation he rarely drives he's new car, like less than once a fortnight.

Obviously leaving a car sitting in the house for weeks is not good for the car, so I was wondering whether turning on the engine and leaving it on idle is better than not turning it on at all and if so how long should my friend leave it on.

Thanks.

Don't get me started on motorcycle riders.
For the same reasons that have been discussed above for cars, this is not necessary - you're just wasting fuel and time.

I was doing this on my 2012 Ninja. You make it sound like there's a choice! I really hated having to stand around waiting. There are still lots of carby motorcycles out there that need to be warmed up before riding off otherwise the engine would just shut off.

  • I had a 2 month trip in Europe a few years back, what i did was disconnect the battery (car has an alarm/immobiliser), locked up the car and left it in the driveway under the weather (no garage).

First day back, connected it back up and started on first go, let it idle for abit and took it to the servo, check tyres, all good, no issues. Although i did have to whip put the manual how to set my clock again……

If your concerns with the alarm being disabled, unless they tow your car aways, your chances of being stolen is the same whether it just park at the shops or as above.

  • Whenever leaving car for too long

    • Tyres will get flat marks if left unmoved for way too long ( So best to leave car up on 4 Jacks)
    • Obviously battery is the number one concern, would probably need to replace it soon
    • Need to ensure there's additive added to gas tank to make it last longer (only lasts upto 1 year with additives, best to get gas tank empty instead)
    • bugs and shit make their home in car.
    • Need to ensure that the car reaches operating temperature probably 5 mins after coolant reaches middle of temp gauge (regardless of whichever combustion car it is, otherwise
    • No point of turning it on and even idealing it).
    • Oil need to be changed by time intervals so need to do that too.
    • Other fluids like brake fluid, coolant transmission fluid etc. may need changing too, especially if the vehicle hardly reaches operating temperature.
    • For Diesel Cars but kinda have to take them out at highway speeds once every 2 months or so, to clean up diesel filter.
    • too long

How long? From what you’ve said above I’d say more than 6 months.

Diesel cars only need to clean the filter if they’ve been driven. The DPF will not need cleaning if the engine has not been running.

Many people confuse coolant temp with engine temp. Coolant temp reaches its normal operating range - as shown on the temp gauge on the dash - well before the motor fully warms up.

    • It is a good indicator of the engine temperature. Engine is usually much hotter than the coolant. Coolant doesnt create heat, the engine does.

      • I’m talking about the motor fully warming up, not just the temp around the cylinder head which gets very hot very quickly and is transferred to the coolant before the motor is at normal operating temp.

  • Why do people write "He's" instead of "His"?
He rarely drives he is new car?

    • People often use his when they mean he's as well.
I think it's the same reason people use brought instead of bought. They don't know any better.
"My dad brought a new tv from JB recently. He's tv is fully sick".

Interestingly the brought/bought isn't an issue in the UK and the US. Not sure why it's such an issue in Aus.

      • Mate its because this is straya and our true blue lingo is strine. We dont need to cower and kowtow to no lingo the yanks or poms profess to be the right and only way ie the queens english proper. We speak and write as we wanna. And dont tell me ‘it’s not its, it’s it’s’ because if I say or write its its its its. Ditto dont. And thats it end of story.
