Spaceship, Stockspot, Commsec Pocket, Raiz and Vanguard - Which One?

I'm relatively new to investing and have read that index funds and ETFs are the way to go. I'm not confident enough just yet to self-manage any funds, but I am willing to build my knowledge and skills to do it in the future.

Whilst I build my knowledge and skills, I've been looking at Spaceship Voyager, Commsec Pocket, Raiz, Stockspot and Vanguard - comparing their offerings, fees and performance.

I have been with Stockspot for a couple of years now, but I realise that their fees are on the higher side compared to others and that I should be looking to minimise my fees and maximise my returns where possible.

I would like to hear other people's experiences, thoughts and recommendations in hope that it will help me weigh up my options better.

  • If you want to purchase ETFs then you just need a service that allows you to purchase shares on the ASX as they are just publicly traded shares and you buy and sell them on the share market. Commsec brokerage is expensive if you plan to do it on a regular basis.

Selfwealth is pretty good - $8.50 per trade and the trades are under your own HIN. Some of the newer cheaper ones share the company's HIN which means the shares technically don't belong to you and might be trouble if they go belly up.

Raiz and Vanguard are managed funds (slightly different concept - you put money in and they manage the investing for you, and and you pull money out).

SelfWealth are $9.50 per trade, flat fee also unlike CommSec.

      • Ooh, they've gone up! Have you seen any better ones?

        • They've always been $9.50 lol, and no.

          • @Ghost47: Lol, my bad :P

Actually looking at all those ones he's listed, he's actually after opinions on managed funds, not ETFs.
I'll show myself out the door.

Got a little in spaceship. It's doing pretty good.

    • How’s it doing now? I just lost $500 in a week basically from sunsuper with everything on international shares a an experiment, low balance now

      • Still up but gains did dip.
        Top up $200 every fortnight.
The gains r not fantastic but my plan was to use this as a vehicle to build up a 5k chunk and chuck it into VDHG.

  • OP, will you be investing or trading stocks?

    • Thanks. I'm looking to invest.

      • A $5, $10 or $20 trading fee isn't going to make difference at the end of a long term position.

Using a reliable broker with high liquidity and an option rich platform is more important than saving a few cents on a total trade.

Commbank Pocket for ETFs of smaller value, Self wealth for the rest

  • Is there any brokerage better than selfwealth?

  • I would choose a vanguard etf (like VDHG) and put money aside and add it to your etf consistently and regularly (eg monthly)

  • My bread and butter investments are in VAS and VGS. They are ETFs you buy via any online broker. Self wealth are typically the cheapest.

I also have a bit of money in spaceship for higher risk.

    • Do you recommend this or buying Vanguard US ETFs using an app like Stake?

      • I prefer to buy Aus domiciled ETFs. They handle the tax implications and it keeps it simple for me.

        • But when you buy US stocks/ETF using Australian apps such as Stake, shouldn't it work in the same way as Aussie local trade for the purpose of taxation?

  • If you're buying ETFs only, superhero is free. Second is selfwealth at 9.50.

  • Hi OP, I'm on the same boat with you trying to step up on these ETF & stock game.

Could you please elaborate on how did you realize the fee with stockpot is higher than others?

$10k fee would be 0.66% annually that is $66 per year. if someone tops up more than 7 times a year it will be cheaper than selfwealth, as $9.5 per trade.

    Regard

  • Open trader is the underwriters for SelfWealth and it’s only $5 per trade. Their trading floor interface is much better than SelfWealth.

Hear plenty ppl who says they want to invest, but turns out just buying and selling like a momentum trader. If just starting out and wants to get your finger in the pie, buy a asx200 etf like ioz or Nasdaq etf ndq with comm pocket app.
