Samsung 82" TU8000 UHD 4K TV - $2399 @ Powerland

1951

I've been keeping my eyes out for this TV for a while and this one has just dropped today. Best price for this 2020 version TV this year, I don't think Black Friday prices can get any better from the prices I've seen for the RU8000 (2019 model). I just bought it today and getting it delivered for free tomorrow. Next best price from Bing Lee and The Good Guys is $2795.

Also selling on ebay. Possible 5% shopback ebay GC + 1% cw/sb = 6% (not yet verified)

        • Yea don't even bother with FTA unless HD

best just using Netflix etc otherwise there's no reason to get a new TV for FTA you could simply buy a cheap TV from like Aldi for regular TV channels

          • @Willco88: Yea don't bother going above 65 inch for that price

    • For this price, other Sony or LGs have OLED panels or at least local dimming LCD displays instead of Samsung's QLED which hasn't been rated well for viewing angles, colours and overall clarity.

Which Sony or LG is $2399 for an 82"?

Also see comment above with similar sentiment about Samsung TVs. I owned one a few years ago and it failed within 2 years.

All we have is anecdotal data. My 720p 40" Samsung from around 2005 is still working today.
Also, the more popular a brand is, the more failures you will see simply because there's so many more of them out there.

However, again, the Hisense uses an IPS panel, which not many consumers know about, reducing the display quality in every way.

Are you sure the Q8 uses IPS and not VA?
Traditionally IPS has better colors and viewing angles, while VA has better blacks. What is bad about IPS "in every way"?

      • There's so much conflicting information

        • I think a reasonable summary would be, this is a good price for an 82" big-name TV, but other (more expensive) models in the same size range will have better image quality.

So for $2399 you can either have big screen size but lower image quality, or smaller screen size but higher image quality.

          • @eug: I think 65 inch is plenty

            • +1

@Willco88: If you have $2399 to spend and only want a 65", wait for the Sony X9500H to go on sale. ;)

It also depends on how fussy you are. If you don't watch movies in a dark room, then features like local dimming and panels with amazing blacks will probably be pointless for you. If you don't have sofas on the sides of your living room then wide viewing angles may not be an issue. In that case, there's no point buying a Ferrari to drive to Coles.

              • @eug: I just want the best possible product for my budget, hopefully some decent sales on black Friday :)

                • @Willco88: It could also be worth looking at it as a package. For a similar amount of money you could possibly get a top-end Sony 65", or a Hisense Q8 or similar series for maybe $1,000 less, and spend that on a $1,000 audio system if you don't have one already.

One could arguably say the overall experience of a Hisense Q8 + thumping audio system would be more satisfying than an image that's 15% better but with audio that's 50% worse. It really depends on what you like. :)

                  • @eug: I'm just after a decent TV that's it

                  • @eug: Q8 has inbuilt stereo speakers system

                    • @Willco88:

Q8 has inbuilt stereo speakers system

It's better than standard TV speakers, but it really needs a sub. It sounds a little thin as you'd expect from how it looks.

                      • @eug: Well I hope the price lowers but it looks like it has good specs

                        • @Willco88: Even the Sony's going for $2000-$2500 aren't near Ferrari level of TV, but for consumers, they're better than Samsung, LG, Hisense or TCL big cheap TVs because Sony only makes quality products, instead of skimping on features and going big for less. If you want the best of the best, you'd go for their 8K TV. But in this price range, their 65" 4K LCD TVs have the best viewing experience in all areas (measured by rtings and also compared by Stop the FOMO YouTube channel). Or you can get the next best thing with a 55" panel - the A8G.

      • Not 82" because Sony doesn't sell any poor quality crap that doesn't last. Check out Stop the FOMO YouTube channel and the rtings YouTube channel. Sony TVs last and provide a better movie watching and sound experience.

      • Forgot to mention, the X9000H is going for $2185 at Video Pro and has HDMI 2.1 ports for the next-gen consoles. The VA panels Sony uses are known to be better than any other brand's, and when used correctly, they are better in every measurable aspect than IPS. I've read this on the Whirlpool forum, and rtings.com backs this up with their tests. Either way, reviewers always say they look great and the real life experience is what matters.

Get ready for the free samsung advertising on the home screen, on the menu bar, and also advertising forced into your youtube streams.

I 'll never get another Samsung

    • Dafuq? I get it on YouTube but the actual TV os? Lolwut?!

    • I don't think I get any of this on my Samsung. Did you turn the advertising stuff off?

  • Expired I think - back to $2977. Would've grabbed one otherwise.
