Activated Charcoal Powder

Hi, I'm looking people thoughts on activated charcoal pricing and deals if any… Only new to this as I'm trying to make my own black rub for bbq.

Wondering if anyone knows what's a good price and whether all activated charcoal is generally safe for consumption? Seems to be around $15-20 for 100g, $60-70 for a kilo.

I wouldn't be eating activated charcoal unless you have a very good reason to. It's not toxic, but it does have adsorption properties meaning it likes to bind to molecules.

It's normally administered to patients as a low-risk, first-step treatment when they've drank or eaten something they're not supposed (e.g drugs), but too much of the stuff in your gut can cause blockages of the digestive tract — your gut can't digest it, only push it around, so it just collects in your intestine before gets evacuated along with your 💩. You might also suffer other complications like diarrhea or constipation.

and it's not like it adds any taste to your food,. Maybe stick to some Sweet Baby Ray's? Heard Mr. Zuck likes the stuff.

When I was living in Kuala Lumpur, I had a bad case of the runs. Went to the pharmacy and picked up a pack of it for the equivalent of about a dollar. It worked wonders.

Made of coconut husks - plentiful in Malaysia or nearby countries.

      • A pack of sweet baby rays? 🤔 Haha

    • I do like sweet baby rays hahaha, but yea I've read into the charcoal a bit and it's still used as a component of some bbq rubs. It's mixed into a lot of other spices and is coated over the top of meat. Probably don't end up eating too much of it or eating the mix all the time, I think eating that much bbq brisket (that the rub would affect you so adversely) would be far more of a problem lol.

I mean what you say is a worry but I can't find anything to say the famous rubs available do anything different to the activated charcoal component itself. Will continue to look I guess.

      • Don’t you typically only use ~1tbsp of charcoal powder in a brisket rub? Unless you're that guy that cuts the bark off in a sheet and doesn’t share it with anyone the amount of charcoal you eat won’t be substantial, as you already pointed out.
Personally I’d rather eat the charcoal than the hfcs in the sweet baby rays.

Normal healthy people don’t need to eat activated charcoal. Sick people should be very careful eating activated charcoal because it can prevent the absorption of medications.

In short, unless you are suffering an acute chemical poisoning this is just quackery. Potentially harmful quackery.

For a bbq rub, it’s mostly visual effect than anything.

  • Are you wanting to use it for colour or flavour? Liquid smoke would be a better choice if it's only the smoke flavour you're after. And one bottle will last you ages. Amazon has a good variety.

    • Have a smoker so not looking for more liquid smoke, more colour and texture. The charcoal helps to bind the rub together to some degree.
Just looking for an alternative to buying the premix rubs.

    • I'm waiting for someone to ruin your parade on using liquid smoke with health facts like the charcoal….. After all if its yummy it ain't good for you :P

      • Yeah, I'm surprised there haven't been any comments yet! But liquid smoke is a bit less controversial, in that you only need a couple of drops. It's mostly just water with traces of smoke, so it's probably not too bad.

  • It's common in some Asia countries.
It's consumed to treat mild food poisoning or diarrhea.

I've seen some chemist here sell them too.
