Good time to stock up on good quality chocolate. Stack it with 10% off from the Rewards Card plus 5% discount paying with a WISH card through Cashrewards, and it's $19.20/kg (or $20.69/kg net of sugar).

For those interested in a 'net of sugar' price comparison to other brands, I did that in a previous post.

One of the only really good chocolate brands left, as Cadbury formula slowly approaches hersheys in quality.

    Whitmans are not bad too.

I strongly recommend trying the 90% Dark, even (especially?) if you don't like the sickly sweet taste of dark chocolate.

Once you try 90%, you realise what real chocolate is.

From then on, "normal" chocolate tastes like real chocolate that's been watered down to a third of it's purity, using sugar and milk powder (which is exactly what it is).

    • Ernest Hillier is barely available (at Myer I think) but Haigh’s still has a good presence.

      • +1

Haigh's is excellent, but several times the price of Lindt.

      • My other go to for good chocolates is zokoko.

It depends how sensitive your mouth is to bitterness.
The best chocolate might be anywhere from 70% to 95% cocoa.
If you are going to preach the real chocolate gospel, suggest starting with 70%. (The other 30% will be almost all sugar)

I enjoy my coffee with sugar and milk, but cannot understand why anyone would prefer milk chocolate to real. As you say, it just tastes watered-down.
(unless you are talking about chocolated-based candy bars, with fruit/nuts/whatever, but thats a whole other thing)

P.S. Don't forget ALDI Moser Roth (70% or 85%) on your list of good chocolate available here. Though some people may object to the vanilla, it is similar to Lindt, and normal price $3 for 125g. I like the individually-wrapped 25g serves.

      • It depends how sensitive your mouth is to bitterness.
The best chocolate might be anywhere from 70% to 95% cocoa.

I’ve got a pretty high tolerance for bitterness and while I like the 90%, the 75% is still my favourite as it feels like a good balance.

being Keto 95% is my go to… but never in stock at my local Big W :(

    • +4

Note the 95% is smaller at 80g than the other blocks at 100g.

Best value in terms of cacao per g is 90%.

      • +2

Wow I never knew that… will def look at the 90% thx

        • +1

If you're keto though, there is 14g of sugar in the 90%, where there's only 7.2g in the 95% (9g/100g).

          • +1

@Gareth: 14g of carbs, you mean. There is no sugar in cacao, so 14% not possible for 90% chocolate.

            • +3

              @bargaino: Sorry, yes carbs.

              90%: 7.0g Sugar or 14g Carbs per 100g block.
              95%: 2.3g Sugar or 7.4g Carbs per 80g block (2.9g/9.2g per 100g)

Approximately twice the carbs in a [smaller] block should be significant for Keto-ers.

              • @Gareth: Never mind those other carbs; they're fibre. They don't count toward net carbs.

            • @bargaino: What? Aren't we talking about chocolate here? So the remaining 10% of 90% chocolate could be sugar. Also, it'd be 14g not 14%. Might me missing something so please correct me if so!

Edit: nvm didn't read the reply

              • @reloxation:

                Also, it'd be 14g not 14%

                The 90% block is 100g, so 14% is 14g.

                • @wisdomtooth: Doesn't 90% mean 90 grams of cacao or is it a rough guideline? 100g block where 90% is cacao leaves 10g so just don't understand where the 14g comes from. Not well versed in chocolate though so appreciate the info!

                  • @reloxation: Cacao has fibres, i.e. carbs. IOW, of those 90g, 4g is fibre, and of the remaining 10g, 7g is sugar and 3g are also fibre.

                    • +1

@wisdomtooth: Ah, thank you for your wisdom. Learn something new everyday, can't believe I missed that. Have a good one

  • Lindt is my favourite brand. Sometimes reduced at supermarkets but rarely at half price. Thanks OP!

  • Mod, 5% from cash reward is available, just not in the form of cash back but rather discounted gift card.

  • What happened to the 99%, never see it anywhere in store now

    • Coles?

    • Maybe it didn't sell well, so they replaced it with the 95%?

It was not only way more bitter than the 90%, it also had a hint of a sandy, gritty texture instead of the usual silky smoothness (the best thing about good chocolate). And you got less for the price (it was actually 20% smaller or so).

$2 each at Harris Farm Market (NSW) this week.

    • Beat me. Unfortunately no HFM in Qld (miss'em dearly—put in a word with them, will you?).

  • *Blocks

  • Mod: Cashback currently unavailable

What do you mean, Mod? It's not cashback; it's 5% discount paying with a WISH card through Cashrewards. I literally just did that.

  • Can you do a net cocoa table?

  • +1

NSW'ers near a Harris Farm store can get these for $2 (save 25c or 11%)
