  • How about a google sabrina/ chromecast TV?

  • what version of android TV is it running

    • +2

      an old one.

      • Vodafone TV is running Android TV 9

        • Could you please let me know if this Vodafone TV has an antenna port on it? Couldn't find a single one on FB marketplace or gumtree.. Anyone have one to sell at Melbourne?

          • +1

@sorted: the vodafone TV does, allows you free view tv. There was talks about being to record but not sure if that has been done yet

          • @sorted: I have two Vodafone TVs and both have antenna port and ATV9 great units

            • @imsuperimposed: @imsuperimposed Hey, thanks for the reply…are you selling one by any chance? Pls DM me..

              • +1

@sorted: Unfortunately not, I’m using them, but I’ve seen them come up on gumtree and Facebook marketplace if you’re looking to get one.

    • Well I'm pretty sure that it said Android 7 what it said on my Foxtel Now box.

So update support now on this model is lacking.

    Performance: RAM 1GB DDR4

    • +3

I have an android box with 1GB RAM, unless this is crazy optimised that'll be a pretty terrible experience

      • check your cpu antutu score

    • i have one of this, sometimes i need to reboot It

      • I never seem to have to reboot mine. But it does have all updates installed. Runs on Android 7.

    • RAM is actually 2GB DDR4.

      • yes, but 1 Gb redundancy

        • Yeah it reserves it for the operating system and functions.

They removed Kayo and Binge from this box, even though they own them.pass

    • You can probably sideload these. It may influence your decision if you haven't bought one yet or were planning on buying another one, but if you already own one it might be worth investigating.

  • I could not afford an apple TV so bought 2 instead of the last deal at $49 each. running very very slow and crashed a few times. But better than nothing.

    • apple TV is more comparable to a nvidia shield

  • I am just looking for a set top box so that i can watch FTA over projector.. Should I get this? or something else? Don't need any smart TV stuff from the box as that is handled by other devices.. Can anyone recommend a good STB if this ain't good? By the comments, I don't want to be rebooting boxes etc if its that bad.

If you're after something simple that's plug & play with no internet features, I'd suggest opting for something like this instead.

      • +1

I have used both stb 6000 and the Foxtel tv box to watch on my projector. Pros and cons- Stb6000 is faster and more intuitive for fta but need to physically plug in my external hard drive to the box for watching movies which is a pain. Foxtel box is an all in one solution although feeling a bit slow in everything it does, due to internet connectivity and having more apps and features to load. Fta live channels app is not great, but ability to play movies from my hard drive connected to the router over wifi is a huge plus via the vlc player app. End result, jack of all trades, the Foxtel box has found its place in my home theatre.

    dont get this

Wait what happened to Vodafone TV?

    • Discontinued.

      • That's sad. Hopefully Google's new one is good then.

  • Foxtel sent me a free one a few weeks ago, and i've never paid for the service, still on the 2 year complimentary provided by Telstra. Got an email about it, so check if you are also on this offer.

    • Your paying for foxtel you are already paying too much

      • As I said, not paying for it. 2 year free Telstra offer that many of us availed of..

I have the older version of this, not sure if much has changed in specs but I don't find it too bad. It certainly does run an old version of Android and of course there are no updates. On occasion it may get slow and freeze up but it isn't that often and I would say rare occasions. When there are issues, a restart fixes it.

Currently used for Foxtel now and Youtube, as well as abc iview, SBS, Netflix and Stan. And a bit of casting from mobile. It has been good.

    • The actual media player itself would be exactly the same. They only updated the remote control. But other than that zero difference.

      • Fair enough, its the same unit then. I only noted the remote was slightly different.

It works well if you already have Foxtel Multi-room… Much easier for visiting elderly Mother to use than Chromecast etc.

  • Don’t need a tv but also want to watch tv sometimes so got this to plug into my monitor. Instant win! Don’t use much android side of things but the few times I casted Optus Sport and used the YouTube app they worked perfectly.

Amazon prime video will flat out not work, old or new version. Yes, I am talking about side loading. So many apps are missing from Google play on this so avoid if that is something that you fancy you gonna use often…

    • Have you tried side loading WBMC (aka Kodi) and installing a Prime add-on?

      • How could I forget Kodi… great idea, let me try that.

    • You can sideload Amazon Prime Video. You have to be careful, there are a few different apks which don't work properly. What worked for me was installing Aptoide TV store and installing Prime from there, works perfectly.

      • I did that but it didn’t work… any link?

        • There are four different versions when you search in the Aptoide store, search for "prime" instead of "Amazon". You want the bolded one which is specifically Android TV.

          Amazon Prime Video
          Amazon Video
          Amazon Video Webview
          Prime Video - Android TV

  • I got Xiaomi mi TV stick from Kogan, so far so good.

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/xiaomi-mi-tv-stick-with-google-…

Yes has some limitation, doesn't have 4k support and has 1 GB ram, I don't intend to use it heavily, does the job for me, plenty of apps on Google store, good portable option and has Chromecast built-in. Can't complain for 55 bucks.

    • FYI these are also free shipping via Dick Smith.

  • Hello Uncle Rupert. ;-)

  • This was $49 at Jb not long ago

  • Do yourself a favour and get Google's new Chromecast with Google TV instead. Much newer processor, double the RAM and direct updates from Google.

The bundle with Netflix credit+device works out to about $45/- for the device. Netflix credit of $95.94 + device for $139.99.
