Better off with a Amazon FireCube when they do their 50% once or twice a year.
I’ve been using Stremio on Firestick 4K for a year now and it’s been working flawlessly, why’s it rubbish for you?
@Chickenleg: I needed to sideload on it, manually apply updates and use an external player. Have things changed? I can't be buggered stuffing around with things like that anymore. Google I can just install via play store, sign in and it works.
@Buyingcrap: Yes must've changed since then, all I had to do was use Downloader to go to the Stremio site to download the apk and that was it
@TheFreaK: So then i'm curious as to why i need to update it if it works fine. Do i need to? Genuinely asking - i'm not claiming to be very tech savvy but all my original point was that it was simple to install and use on the Firestick.
@Chickenleg: The other guys point was that it’s not as simple to install compared to Google TV OS and that includes maintenance for updates
Lacking updates means you miss out on new features as well as performance optimisations unless you manually refresh the app
@Chickenleg: FWIW - I started using stremio about 18 months ago (firestick max) did an update not long after and it stuffed something up sufficiently to uninstall and reinstall the original version which has been working just fine since.
I just wish the android/FS version had some of the extra features you get on the PC app
manually apply updates and use an external player.
Still need manual update but no need to use external player.
I was replying about Plex with a FireCube not stick for the codecs. I've been using a FireCube for Jellyfin for 3 years and its been great. I have never used stremio as usenet has been going strong since the 90s.
Working fine for me. No problems. I don't update. Don't need to.
Fire stick with SmartTube and Plex has been the best thing for my portable streaming stick setup.
So just no lossless formats ?
All lossless, and ALL DTS formats including lossy won't passthrough
That is really annoying !
That is a deal-breaker. Was hoping to replace my aging OG Shield TV Pro, but have a decent sound system with decent chunk of media in TrueHD :(
Thanks for advising on the lack of DTS support. Have been considering a TV dongle for 4k with TrueHD / DTS capability instead of getting a new htpc + Kodi.
Dolby Atmos is great with my soundbar.
Apple tv
Explicitly does not support DTS/TrueHD…
@trankillity: Can you tell a difference aka blind test?
You'd have to have a quite expensive setup to bother worrying about that. Those HT amps are always out of date once a new codec or format comes out.@G-rig: Yes, easily. And new formats don't come out that often. I have an 8+ year old receiver with 15+ year old DALI speakers that still works great.Only thing I'm missing on the receiver is DV/VRR/120Hz pass-through, nothing new in terms of mainstream audio codecs since ATMOS.
So yes, you need a decently expensive setup to tell the difference (mine was around $3.5k), but it's a "buy once, cry once" situation. Don't anticipate replacing the speakers for at least another 5 years and unlikely I'll replace the receiver even if I get a TV that supports DV/VRR/120Hz.
@trankillity: Not so much these days with very marginal gains but there were new formats around fairly often in the late 90s to 2010. It's the kind of thing where you are best to keep the AV Receiver reasonably up to date if the rest of your gear is good (speakers, cabling, players, tv etc). Even audio streaming is better in the last few years.
I just think a decent soundbar is a lot more simple and cheaper these days, certainly good enough for apartments with medium sized room. The shape is also more favourable as you need to consider room treatment once you are spending decent money to get the most out of your equipment.
AV receivers are jack of all trades, master of none as it's well known they aren't the best for music (but some people are movie buffs and couldn't care). I run a separate 2.1 ch setup for music (RPI4 - DAC - Active monitors and sub).
@G-rig: I'm confused. You literally just contradicted yourself by saying formats haven't changed much since the 2010s. Or were you admitting that you were mistaken to say that HT receivers go out of date quickly? Soundbar will indeed do the average Jane/Joe but doesn't provide any sort of upgradeability/flexibility. I started with 2.0, then went to 2.1, then 4.1, then 5.1, now 5.1.2 - all using the same original speakers and only upgraded the amp once (for ATMOS support). Can't do that with most soundbars.
And I think you mean that AV receivers aren't specialist music devices. They are specialist audio and video devices, so they work great for TV, movies, gaming (which are the three things we use the lounge for 90% of the time). Like you, I have a separate setup in my office w/ standalone DAC/Amp + studio monitors + subwoofer + open back headphones all powered by a RPI running headless Plexamp for music while I work.
@trankillity: Mate I'm sure there's a timeline of AV receiver new formats or number of speakers support online. I got the shits with it since 2010.
Ask any audiophile, they'll say AV receivers do the job but aren't great for music. Think of them as a handy in-out box. Power amps and 2ch integrated amps are generally much better.
Anyway the sky is the limit with all that crap and some people would be happy listening to music in surround with all the effects on.
Does your amp support listening to music with Dolby Atmos , Tidal has that now :).
Does your amp support listening to music with Dolby Atmos , Tidal has that now :).
Yeah it does actually. I tinkered with it a bit, but as with most surround music - was kinda gimmicky. I stopped subscribing to TIDAL after they killed their API access for Plexamp though and just rip my own CDs now.
@trankillity: Yeah I hate music in surround too and it doesn't even sound good vs 2.1, although I don't have a proper HT setup to test it on (just Atmos soundbar).
I like Tidal, the algorithm pretty good and is actually very affordable depending on which country you are in. Works well with Volumio, as does my library of FLAC files.
The point is, even a cheap to moderate headphone desktop setup sounds far better than home theatre, and you wouldn't need to spend over $500-1k.
I replaced a 4k Chromecast with this for stremio, works well. Function wise it's the same but smoother/faster with opening apps and going through menus etc.
My old 4k chromecast, after just updated to Andriod 14, seems a bit better, fixed some of the issue I have before, like HDR10+ from Stremio on my Samsung TV, sometimes only got HDR but now they can play as HDR10+ and Kodi Matt Huisman 7Plus app, on demands video works now.
4k Chromecast works very well with Stremio.
The reason I'm keen to upgrade is the extra storage really, so I can put more apps and games etc.its a much better experience, but like, not life-changingly different. I put the 4k's on the kids TV's haha
Yes the previous generation 4k Google TV has been working fine for years, don't see a need to upgrade yet but $88 seems good. Still got a spare one as well can't be bothered trying to sell both for stuff all.
Kodi works great too for no ads on catch-up apps and unofficial sports.
Given the nature of stremio I think it would still take up to 10s to play titles.
So this works for Streamio, but 4k Chromecast doesn't?
Of course it would. Some people give up a bit easily.
I just had issues a few years ago…and probably gave up too easily. So I recently got a 4k firestick and IPTV.
I'll try stremio again tonight.
Do I have to use Real Debrid that everyone seems to be suggesting?
@Oldmate88: That's the part that makes it good, of course you don't have to but it's pretty seamless and the cataloguing is great.
Maybe refer to the Reddit guide if you haven't already:
https://www.reddit.com/r/StremioAddons/comments/15agu2p/stre…@Oldmate88: Yeah you don't need to worry about that, set it up on the PC first and should all be there.
What’s this like for retro gaming?
Arent retro games at like 240p i think a calculator would be fine running Double Dragon
Depends. I mean PS3 is considered retro now.
Ps3 usually just 480p or 720p native. EZ as, the PS3's only had 256mb of ram as well
@StingyShopper: The PS3 is notoriously difficult to emulate as they went hard on parallel processing units, which makes emulating tricky even with modern CPUs as the overhead is massive.
@Jolakot: Not anymore! RCPS3 has come along leaps and bounds since then over 90% of the library is fully playable on a semi decent rig can confirm just beat red dead 1 a few months using it
@MikeyD333: Oh that's awesome, I remember looking into it maybe 2 years ago with a 10th gen i9 CPU and rtx3080, and was surprised how rough it was. Shame we never got rdr1 on PC
A lot of the arcade games were 480p, like the Sega Model 1/2/3 games, Double Dragon and the side-scrolling games were 240p.
My Vodafone TV box still rocking to this day. Any big benefits from upgrading to this?
Kayo app?
I still use my voda box for most things, but no kayo is becoming a deal breaker. This deal might mean that the voda box finally retires.
Ahh, don't use kayo, just superrabit77 which covers my very basic sports needs,
An OS that is 6gens newer which means all current apps work on it, more CPU/Ram/Storage & a smoother experience overall. There is no comparison really.
So, no real reason to upgrade since it can do the same things i use my current one for. Thanks!
Kodi works. Smarttube works.
Yep, all apps work.
All hail the Voda box!
Nah! You rock it queen, till you can rock it no more.
Gave mine to my parents but still kicking along too! You use them until you can't I reckon
..also, how good is the Vodafone boxes remote compared to the stupid Chromecast ones?
I got silicon sleeves for the old HD Chromecast remotes and they're still too small, fiddly and easy to drop. The buttons on one of them are dying and need to press really firmly which slows down the whole experience.
Conversely the Voda remote is a perfect size without being chungus. Buttons working as good as day one.
Voda is running some ancient Android TV version but Kodi is up to date and the thing just won't die.
Having reluctantly upgraded from the VFTV to the Google TV Streamer (thanks OP!) and immediately hating the tiny Google TV remote, I was very happy to discover that the VFTV remote can pair to the Google TV Streamer and most of the functions still work properly!
They are fine but depends what you are used to. I think it's fine. Yep can connect Bluetooth devices.
The ccwgtv with volume buttons on the side is easy enough.I used to have a Logitech harmony one back when home theatre was worth the effort.
@G-rig: My family still daily's our 1080p BenQ projector based HT. Got a Harmony 650 but it's such a pain to change the configuration after switching some of the HT gear that I just use it to turn the system on/off then switch to the Voda remote for control.
Had the white Xbox 360 edition Harmony back in the day but it died. ☹️
Definitely will keep the Voda remote to pair with the Chromecast if the Voda box ever dies.
Price beat at Officeworks for further $4 off and use ultimate gift cards if you have. If you have onepass and flybuys card, you can get points as well.
This guy OzBargains
Or price match at JB and sign up to Perks and get it for $78 with the $10 off voucher
I don't think you can use perks vouchers with price match
I have 10 for 75 at JB in CommBank yello, hm I don't need it but why not lol
Paid 68 lol
Price match at jbhifi and $10 perks is better, and, you can do it from your bed.
Yes. I just did this. Good timing as I had a birthday perks voucher that was due to expire shortly.
Price matched at Good Guys and I had a $20 new user voucher so paid a total of $68.
Thanks. It reminds me I have a $30 off of a min $100 order. I can throw in a usb c cable to make it over $100:)
Did you manage to get $30 off? The $30 off is in store only.
yeah i brought two 4k chromesticks ccwgtv from gerry last time. Don't wanna do it again!
Thanks, went to OW this morning and paid $83.60. Watching Kayo 4K now via Ethernet and the picture is much clearer than the Chromecast TV which must have struggled with Wi-Fi
I’ve just bought one today from OW too, set it up and can’t get 4K as a selectable option in the Kayo settings :(
I have the Premium plan and Ethernet connected too.Noticed my mate couldn't select that either the other night, assumed the network was struggling at the time.. perhaps it's the app.
Never had an issue over WiFi 6 but have a good router and setup.
@G-rig: I went back into the kayo app on the streamer a few hours later and 4K was available to select. I hadn’t done anything to trigger the change, seems like it just needed some time to update?
Does anyone know if this is good for Moonlight game streaming from your PC?
I asked around in the moonlight reddit and received mixed reviews.
I quickly did some research, hoping that this would be faster than older Google TV devices, and yeah it seems like this performs average at best.
I have upgraded to this from a Google TV with Chromecast and the speed is absolutely noticeable. The built in lan port is also a plus and the new remote makes it a great upgrade as well, especially the customized favorite button.
I think I paid $115 on sale from the good guys so this is definitely a bargain
Considering getting another one at this price
There's an app that you can get that will customise all your buttons on the tenor, even the older Chromecast with Google tv. I think its called button mapper
If you've still got your old Google TV with Chromecast stick, buy a USB C hub, plug the power into that, and the hub into the Chromecast. you can then use its network point and USB ports (haven't tried USB sticks).
From memory, not all usb hubs work. There is a guy who compiled a spreadsheet of compatible.
Bugger. I'm not sure which brand mine is. It'll be from Amazon somewhere
I'm currently using a POE to USB C adapter > USB C Hub > Chromecast so it gets power via the network cable. The power cable taking two plugs shits me.
@Chmmr: I bought the Vemont 5in1 back in 2021 as it was suggested and cheap at the time. Last year needed a second and got the Ugreen Revodok 1061 6in1.
Never thought of adding POE into the mix. Are you using one of those generic POE splitters? I was trying to see if there was a usb hub with poe built in. Rather than having to daisy chain them, but no luck.
@yamumma: https://amzn.asia/d/29jwc6U
That into the USB C hub's network point and PD port into the chromecast
It's good for Plex but it's worth mentioning that it does not support Dolby trueHD or the DTS codecs which is a deal-breaker for some
