  • What kind of Plex library do you have and what tv?

  • Good price and about what I am comfortable paying given the specs.

Ended up price matching through the Google Store to use existing store credit that I probably wouldn't have otherwise used.

Had to "pay" the full price upfront and the difference will be refunded upon shipping, also in store credit.

    • What is the way to get it price matched at Google Store? Call or Chat?

      • +1

Via their chat, it was a bit painful but got there in the end.

I don't think you need to chat prior as you don't submit the claim until after your order ships but I wanted confirmation before I did it…just in case.

They've sent me an email advising to reply once the order ships and they'll process the refund.

They refund you with the same payment method you use to make the purchase, be that card or store credit.

        • +1

Will the refund be calculated what you actually paid after applying your existing store credit?

For example, Google store price $160 - assuming your existing credit $60 = $100 what you paid. Then price match $88 and refund $12?

          • +1

@Think: They will refund $72 back to your original payment method, not just $12. For example, if I used $100 Google credit, they would refund $12 to the Google credit and $60 back to my credit card.

    • +1

so you paid full price, using existing store credit that I probably wouldn't have otherwise used. to get more store credit, which you probably wouldn't use. ok

      • I don't get more store credit than I had, just end up using $88 worth of it instead of $159 they're charging.

        Zero net cost to me.

  • Thanks just price beat it at Officeworks. I prefer the Shield for home but for travelling I'm upgrading from a CCwGTV to this as it still looks pretty compact

    • +1

No one would do this for travelling lol such a bad idea if you have the chromecast 4k

      • Why? I just opened it up and it's the size of my hand so will fit fine, not too different to the Chromecast size wise. Also has ethernet so can plug directly into the gl.inet router if convenient. Seems pretty good to me

        • Youll be having to carry an extra hdmi cable in addition to the usb c. And hdmi is not usually thin or flexible. Just more space and extra thing to worry about. You forget 1 cable and the thing won't work

          • +2

@Fuzor: I think I can afford the space to fit a half metre HDMI cable haha

Nothing for me to worry about either, I have small electronics bags which keeps everything together for travelling. Nice and easy

If it's not for you then sure, but it's not exactly difficult like you're making it out to be

          • +1

@Fuzor: I don't get what the big deal is about carrying the cable everyone is talking about.
You would have it connected at your home or wherever prior to travel anyway.
Just unplug the cable from the TV instead of at the back of the streamer. Is it really that much of an issue?
I'd be complaining more about Google not including the HDMI cable in the box at the price tag of $160.

            • @Secret ID: At least it came with a usb charger 😅
But yeah I wouldn't have got it if it wasn't sub $100

  • Anyone know if we can install kodi + umbrella?

  • +2

It's utter bullshit that these don't support Dolby TrueHD and DTS passthrough because I'd be all over this.

These features are non-negotiables for a streamer device for me. Half my 50TB library is in some flavour of DTS and DTS only.

    • DTS passthrough

I think it can do DTS, if I remember it correctly, I plugged it into my old non 4k AV receiver, it did decode DTS.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, pricebeat at OW

    • Me too. Used a gift card that I got for 10% off too.

  • This is a good deal. I upgraded from Chromecast 4K to this device and everything has been superior, including streaming through Kayo and Kodi and whatnot.

    • Superior how

      • +2

Larger capacity holding more apps and data (run into less problems in Kodi), snappier navigation, better streaming experience overall from clearer placement of device, better remote control, Dolby Atmos support, Bluetooth a little better too I feel.

  • +5

If you're ditching Kayo/foxtel for questionable IPTV services, this works really with the Tivimate app. Add in Matt's playlists https://i.mjh.nz/ and you've got the local channels in the local timezones.

Kayo, Kodi, Plex, Stremio, SmartTube (adfree YT), VPNs, apps work really well.

  • +1

Just got it from JB for $73.32
price match + $10 perks coupon + 6% off JB gift card via rewards gateway.

beats the shit out of samsung tizen

    • +2

Also $10 cashback from CBA Yello if you have the offer :)

    • +2

Price match for $88 then perks voucher brings it to $78. Bought a $78 in hifi voucher through special gift cards gives 10% back through Amex offers total price $70.20

      • You ozbargained hard

Was looking for a device for a non 4k bedroom TV recently and went with a MiBox Gen 3. Paid abit less than this but would have jumped on this at this price. Might get one anyway to replace kids CCWGTV which have been using since release.

    • +1

The latest mibox is better in most areas except for the RAM. Still waiting for mine to come, I think I paid 60 bucks

      • Yeah been pretty happy with it so far so no complaints.

      • Where you buy from, you got a link, I'm keen

        • +1

Can't link but got mine from AliExpress Goldway store

          • @Whatisthatvelvet: Cheers mate found it on that store, will wait for it to drop from 85 bucks that it is now to something better. Faster than this Google 4k streamer anyways right

            • +1

@adrianhughes1998: Probably not "faster" as it has less RAM and slower ethernet but it has advantages in other areas depending on what you are using it for. comparison chart

              • +1

@donga100: Thank you, yeah I wanted something that's smoother and not so laggy compared to the Chromecast 4k Google TV that I have already

              • @donga100: Great chart, but the most important feature to me is frame matching, is that vrr ?

                • @KenDiaMoi: I believe so but it's not my chart so not 100% sure.

  • I'll wait till the next Nvidia Shield arrives in 2525.

    • +6

You're going to be waiting a while.

    • I have a feeling that TV boxes are pretty low on their priority list with the current AI boom.

I have about 4 tvs at home and each of the tvs have 1 Apple TV + google 4K. I had google tv to use mostly for the tivimate when there was no iOS equivalent which now there is.
I find that since then I have never really used google tv. Apple TV is snappier and does everything what google tv does, expect maybe Kodi which I don't use and use Plex instead. The only reason I sometimes might use google tv is for the Foxtel companion app and Streamio, which are not available on TvOS. However now Samsung / LG have streamio app, so I just use that and Foxtel app is pretty meh so don't find myself using google tv at all.

    • What’s the tvOS equivalent to tivimate? Is it TiviMax you’re referring to or is there another now?
I still run an nvidia shield and Apple TV 4K on each of the tv’s in our house. Love the Apple TV for most things and the simple interface. Still much prefer tivimate over TiviMax though and still have to use the shield for stremio as no tvOS app for it yet (although it’s in the works and currently in testing from what I understand, so really looking forward to when that gets released).

  • I purchased this in January 2023 still in box Chromecast with Google TV (HD) how does this compare to what we are seeing here?
I think I got it for an older tv ie Sony tv from 2016 which i believe some apps are no longer working on it or possibly I got it for another tv I no longer have.
I take this one in this post is a newer and updated model to mine?
I have currently a Samsung 4k tv from 2022 purchased 2023 and I’m going to be setting this up with a Samsung 830d soundbar package and a pana 820 4K player.

I believe it’s better to not use the apps on the 820 4K player but better to use the apps on Samsung tv? Not sure if that’s due to functionality or getting most out of soundbar.
I take my set up above I plan to do is not going to benefit from my current Google tv? Or best used with the old Sony 3d tv .
Do I honest need this Google device mentioned in this thread to help functionality of my new set up when I get around to it.

    • This is a superior device to the Google Chromecast HD.

  • +1

I just went to JB and they price matched :)

  • Can a universal Wireless Bluetooth Remote Control be paired with this Google TV Streamer?

I need to pair ether the older Chromecast Ultra 4K or this streamer with a remote that has numerical keypad for senior.

    https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005008093435356.html?

    • Not sure about those ones, they are designed for LG TVs which run WebOS, not Android. I'd suggest looking for ones that explicitly say 'Compatible with Android TV'

  • +1

Noob question but is this redundant if you already own a TV with built-in Google TV?

    • +6

On most modern tv after 2018/19, it is. Tv from that point on have quicker chips so ui isnt slow anymore. You can get one once your tv android version gets too old in a few years

    • +3

If Google TV is fast on your TV then yes, but if it's slow then you're probably better off getting this.

      • Makes sense, thanks all!

  • +5

Thanks OP, price matched + Birthday coupon @ JB HiFi to escape Samsung's godawful Tizen OS.

For those wanting ad-free, sponsor-free YouTube but prefer the official UI, try TizenTube Cobalt

    • +2

I was using TizenTube on my 2017 Samsung Frame, but TizenBrew would repeatedly wake it from sleep (art mode) and I couldn't find a way to fix it. So I picked up this instead, and wasn't too happy with the UI for SmartTube. Cobalt sounds perfect, thanks.

      • Yeah I used to use TizenTube too, but can't get it to install on my new monitor. Can confirm the Google TV version is exactly the same, and voice search works too.

    • This. TizenTube Cobalt is an absolute gem. Perfect app (except for the ugly icon) miles better than SmartTube with its outdated UI.

      • What's better about it compared to SmartTube?
