  • His Cloud Practitioner course is quite good.

Would recommend cantrill.io for AWS courses. Quality is much higher level than Udemy

    • Been looking at that one. Does it ever go on sale?

I'm not sure sorry, but I got the 2 SA courses for $100 bundle. It is worth it for the content; the courses are so comprehensive it puts my Uni degree to shame lol

      Thanks for the sharing.

    • Agreed. Much better content than acloudguru and Udemy. Adrian is great.

    No funny accent ??

  • Are these sorts of courses actually regarded to be legitimate forms of training for employers? Like enough to land you a job with no prior work experience? I saw someone with a lot of experience recommend these in a Facebook group yesterday.

    • Great for self study and passing the AWS exams. Being certified is definitely beneficial for getting jobs. I've listed training I've done in my cv, but employers look at experience and certs more favourably.

The companies I've worked for over the years have typically opted for official courses by the vendor. Not saying it can't happen - I've seen a department in my current job purchase Linux academy subscriptions to help upskill their staff.

I hope that department promptly canceled that LA subscription. Mine had both LA and ACG, but since the merger (which appears to have been the worst trade deal, maybe ever), we're cancelling both. Content has gone rapidly down hill, or is plain out of date.

I recently achieved my SA Pro exam - Started with LA but found it so out of date i was constantly checking AWS, not to mention short compared to Adrians course, which got me a score in the mid 900's.

Agree though - Experience will (should) always beat someone with just certs. We often find candidates with many certs, but when it comes time to actually work you start to quickly realize they just speed ran the certification courses, and actually know very little for real world use. Most recently we had a candidate come in with 4 AWS certs (All associate + Cloud Prac), yet honestly our newest employee who has zero certs is more skilled within AWS.

        • They gave me access briefly to LA, I looked over it and never used it. I haven't used ACG since Adrian left and heard a lot of complaints since the merger (pretty sure the 'lifetime' access to ACG course I purchased was removed).

Same experience as you, people come in with these certs and no experience, a few technical questions show they have no idea about cloud. Reality is far different from the memorized questions/scenarios you get in exams.

I've been in IT for 15 years and outside of some basic certs when I first started in IT, I haven't had any until I got AWS SA last year. Experience has won out every time.

      • ok great thanks heaps for the info :-). I understand ozbargain is probably not the place to be seeking career advice (haha) but any idea of a good starting point to get into the I.T. industry if not something like these courses? is the traditional route of TAFE/Uni still the best option?

        • +1

Its a matter of getting your foot in the door, which can be a bit difficult without experience. Starting at the bottom rung such as a help desk/call centre is a common way in, this is how I started (I obtained A+ and Network+ certs to show my interest in IT), but I'm sure there are other ways.

Self studying, using resources like this bargain is considerably cheaper than vendor run courses, but they only work if you are disciplined. They won't be able to cover everything 100% (cloud changes very quickly and training resources become out of date) so you should always be reading up on the subjects/whitepapers/leveraging other training resources as well.

Tafe and uni are always an option. My brother was studying for a diploma in IT, got into a Cyber Security role 2 years in and his company supported him completing the 3rd year. 2 years later he is now a manager, looking at moving into a senior role. Prior to his study, he had no clue about what he wanted to do career-wise, his only interest in IT was gaming at that point.

@Planky: ok i will have a look into these courses, good to know there are other options. Thanks very much for taking the time to give me your advice, its very much appreciated.

This is very good. I have been studying this video for a couple of weeks

  • Digitalcloud.training how is this site? Anyone has feedback,
thinking of getting the practice exams https://learn.digitalcloud.training/product/aws-certified-cl…

    • I used the practice questions to create Anki flashcard and it did help. I also recommend to get an overview of all AWS products (link) because the practice questions don't cover as much.

Its Instructor own website which has better package options (price & content) to offer compared to Udemy
