  • Seems expensive for a Snapdragon 765G device. Android One is a big plus though.

    • +2

But pixel 5 has the same processor

      • +2

Pixel 5 has 90Hz OLED screen and ip68. It does have power limited SD765 though so multi core score is 10-15% lower than all other SD765, single core is however not limited so same as others.

Still Pixel is always more expensive. But I would not touch any Nokia, as the promise of quick Android update is just a promise. They are now slower than Oppo, Xiaomi, OnePlus and Samsung. If you want pure Android Pixel is a no brainer.

        • +1

I thought android one would get pretty quick updates?

That being said I'm not a pixel / recent nokia fan either.

          • @frogduck: Supposed to however it's only Nokia nowadays. Motorola still has occasional Android One phone and that's it. Nokia update is so slow they have no phones on Android 11 yet whereas OP and some Oppo & Xiaomi already have Android 11. Security patch wise Nokia also can't catch up to Samsung and OP who nowadays offer same day or even earlier than Pixel phones themselves, whereas Nokia is usually 3 weeks later.

Android One is pretty much an embarrassment now. Wonder why Google no longer advertise it? With Google now playing in mid range tier, Nokia is losing its appeal fast.

        • +3

I have a Nokia Scirocco and it went from Android 8 —> 9 —> 10 and still get Security updates. I'd like to see any Samsung get two major OS updates.

          • -1

@BlinkyBill: You sure? My budget J5 Pro went from 7 to 8 then to 9. Samsung always provide 2 min OS update and now S10 and above plus A51 and above are getting THREE OS update.

Sony has also committed to THREE and OP already done THREE. Your Nokia is boohoo.

You are probably confused Samsung with LG who has crap update commitment. Or Motorola who has 1 OS only policy unless you buy the premium range.

And for the record my Poco F1 gone from 8 to 9 and then 10 earlier this year.

            • +1

@Bigboomboom: Well considering it was $500 well over two years ago for a SD835, OLED screen, 128GB storage I think it's done pretty well.

              • -1

@BlinkyBill: MSRP was $1,000 or something so I don't think you can compare like that. My J5 Pro was $264 bought in 2017 and it had Android 9 One UI final update, so?

2 min OS is fairly common among Android phones. Samsung, OP, Oppo (nowadays), Xiaomi, Huawei, Sony all has it.

For the record when 8 Sirocco was released it was priced same as my Pixel 2 MSRP. My Pixel 2 is sadly end of line for support but it's sitting on Android 11 October patch and getting a final security patch update in December. Not too bad for a 2017 phone, that's what Android One was supposed to mimic.

                • +1

@Bigboomboom: Android One guaranteed 2 years or OS upgrades and 3 years of Security updates, although this was still vendor-specific, please don't make things up like: "that's what Android One was supposed to mimic", Nokia has honoured it's end of the deal. Eg: Nokia Scirocco is on Oct 20 security patch.

            • +1

@Bigboomboom: No idea what the official commitment is on Nokias but my Nokia 8 also had done three major OS and is on October 2020 security update.

From experience, Nokia 8 was relatively quick to get major OS updates (though the last one was stuck in beta testing for a while) whilst the Samsung note 8 took month/s longer.

I can't speak for how fast they are now though… As they have a larger product line now.

              • @wwwsam: Is your Nokia 8 (not Sirocco) on Android 10? I don't think so, I haven't seen any news it's getting 10. Then it only has 2 major OS.

Nokia 8 is the one with LCD screen not the Sirocco with OLED.

                • @Bigboomboom: I never mentioned anything about the screen and sorry i accidentally counted Android 7 as an update.
On the screen though, it has an extremely high ppi (don't see any pixel phones coming anywhere near it) and is extremely bright when turned up. Colour rendition is ok for a 3yo phone and doesn't have burn in like note8 (although starting to get stuck pixels).

Honestly though, i prefer constant security updates over yearly major updates as it keeps adding things i don't care about and shuffles all the things i do care about.

                  • @wwwsam: Nokia 8 has 554ppi and Pixel XL (released 6 months earlier) has 534ppi. Counting ppi however is useless as phones nowadays are getting larger but not increasing in resolution. 400ppi is sufficient and most are around this.

Majority of Samsung phones released last year and this year have monthly, on time and a lot of time faster than Nokia. They have done a lot of good turning it around. And if you hate Samsung there's always Sony or OnePlus, they do 3 OS and monthly updates.

And not sure why you don't want major OS, as most of the phones getting security patch now even Chinese budget phones. It's the OS that many are raising the bar for and it's an embarrassment that Nokia isn't following suit. Apart from Google there are now Sony, Samsung and One Plus giving three major OS.

        • -1

My Nokia 7 Plus still gets updates - and this model is three plus years old(my phone is about 2.5 years). I think it started on Android 8, and now its all the way to 10. Not sure if it will get 11.

On the other hand, I've only had disappointing experience with Samsung.

But.. if you want guarantee on Android updates (and I think this is the most important factor in a phone besides the camera), everyone here is correct that Pixel is the way to go.

          • +1

@bpop99: Nokia 7 Plus was released in April 2018, not 3 years yet. It won't receive Android 11 because Nokia have never done 3 major OS unlike some misconceptions people are having.

If I remember correctly Nokia 8 get from 7 to 8 to 8.1 (not a major OS update) to 9 and then done. Maybe that's why people thought it received 3 OS but that's wrong. 8.1 was same year as 8 and only 4 months later.

            • @Bigboomboom: Fair point - I stand corrected on OS updates

              • +1

@bpop99: Honestly at this price I would rather buy Pixel 4a 5G. It has everything Nokia 8.3 has and then better support.

Or stretch it to Pixel 5 for wireless charging, 90HZ OLED screen and ip68.

            • @Bigboomboom: Read above, Android One program is 2 years or major OS updates and 3 years of security updates, not sure why you keep going on about 3 os updates.

              • @BlinkyBill: Because some still think it's 3 OS. But that doesn't matter, what matter is there are now 3 brands that have 3 major OS and 3 years security patch aside from Google. Unless Nokia up their game they can only compete at budget tier. Samsung has done very well at mid tier and OP is now in mid tier.

        • +1

All 3 nokia's in my household went to November patch on the 3rd.

          3 days isnt too bad.

And my mates old 7 plus continues to get security patches also.

  • +3

If it had qi charging I would be keen. Have been happy with my Nokia 7 plus

  • +1

Really hard to go back to a LCD screen from a AMOLED. I'll stick with my Oppo Reno z for now

    • +1

There's Mi 10 Lite 5G if you want cheap ($449) or Pixel 4a 5G $799 if you want pure Android. There's also Samsung A71 5G $689 (Amazon AU) that has 3 major OS and 3 year security patch promised although that has an Exynos SoC.

All of them have similar hardware and AMOLED screen.

  • +3

The thing thats hard to quantify about holding these new nokia phones is build quality.

Yeah, when you talk premium tier and every panel is glass, and every frame is metal, they all feel pretty samey.

But low to mid tier, knowing they STILL go through the nokia stress tests (bend test, drop tests, sandstorm test, humidity test, etc) before being sold is mentally nice; but there's something more about the rigidity, the subtle flex without creaking that samsung plastic phones do, the solid 'click' of the charge port in the newer ones (old ones had port issues; but were replaced under warranty).

Even the sim card tray being 'smooth' and stiff; no flex, and no catching on card mechanisms.

Im no nokia fanboy; i personally use blackberry, but Im in charge of distributing and configuring mobile phones for my whole company, so i handle a LOT of midrange phones, and see the damaged ones come back.

Nokia's are super popular (old ceo's like the name) yet we see so few break; there's still something to be said about nokias physical stress testing imo.

Still, just an opinion of a random tech on the internet, everyone will have "the brand they love" and fight tooth and nail for a company they spent money on, to feel justified.

This isn't it for me (blackberry for me); but it is one I love to provide to clients.

  • Nokia (HMD) is a joke now, they don't even update their phones on time. They provide quick updates for 6 months and then they put it on the back-burner.

Got a 8.1 and the cheaper, newer 7.2 can do slow-mo video recording and mine can't?

    • +1

Everybody expects that over time features filter down from high end phones to cheaper phones.
Slow-mo video recording is likely to be hardware dependent so impossible to upgrade via software.

Nokia are great for providing solid phones at a reasonable price with clean Android interface and frequent OS updates.

      • -3

So my more premium and higher spec'ed 8.1 (December 2018) is somehow inferior to the 7.2 (September 2019)? BS

Same camera, SD 710 vs SD 660, yeah hardware dependent BS…

Nokia are shit, if you think its a reasonable price, dream on, frequent OS updates? LOL, they are slow at everything.

Solid phones? LMAO, charging port problems on every single phone, just ask users or Google it, its a common occurrence.

        • Complaining about fault is common, posting that your charging port still works is less common.

There are four Nokias in our family. The oldest is a Nokia 7+ and it is still going strong.after daily usage by a teenage boy.

          • @mathew42: Didn't address any of the other points…

Also comments above reinforce my point, other manufacturers evolve, not Nokia.

        • +2

Solid phones? LMAO, charging port problems on every single phone, just ask users or Google it, its a common occurrence.

Why does that make you laugh your ass off? You're sounding hysterical in that post, my dude.

Most of the faulty ports appeared within 6-12 months; they were repaired free under warranty.
If you didn't bother, I'm not sure why. No manufacturer makes perfect devices all the time.

I just waked into the Nokia Service Center, handed the phone over and picked it up that afternoon with a fixed port.
People love to complain; but I ask:
What efforts did you go to to rectify the issue?

The Nokia 8.1 my mate owns does 30FPS fine, which is all that the SD710 is able to handle on a hardware level.
It's NPU is only a Hexagon 685, after all.

If other phones are able to do more, it'll be a kernel level driver trick, likely helped by the image sensor doing some of the processing before passing it directly to cache (which I believe is key here…).

There's a lot more to image processing than a chosen APU.

If I had to take a guess, I'd bet the fact that an SD660 has L2 Cache, where a 710 does not, would be the defining factor in the ability to process images somewhat faster.

Besides; the listed device is still only half almost a third of actual flagship costs.

I can't be too upset when I can personally rate this at a minimum 75% of a flagship, in regards to features; but at only 45% of the price.
Makes it one hell of a bargain.

And as I said, the 'Nokia Stress tests' they pass, ensure of the hundreds I've sent out, I've only ever seen 10's back; where as iphones or S series, I'd get probably 5 a week with a minor fault.

IMO, the Nokias are still built with some abuse in mind; where as the 'big boys' are all about features and flash.

Also comments above reinforce my point, other manufacturers evolve, not Nokia.

If I open my old phone draw, I can assure you, Nokia has come a LONG way. An EXTREMELY long way. Though I do miss my N*Gague

          • @MasterScythe: The Nokia 8.1 my mate owns does 30FPS fine, which is all that the SD710 is able to handle on a hardware level.

Yeah that's wrong, I'm not listing all the phones that can do 60fps and even 120fps with a SD 710.

Also 765G is considered flagship? uhh hello 865? its a upper-midrange phone.

            • +1

              @GTR12:

Yeah that's wrong, I'm not listing all the phones that can do 60fps and even 120fps with a SD 710.

No it's not. Any phones that can do more, are doing so at a software level.
Please go read the datasheet for the Hexagon685 again.

Of course plenty of phones can do it, thats not what I said, is it?

If you're into learning about chip development, look into why the meditek is better at a lot of image processing than even the best snapdragon, it'll show you a lot about how the DMA occurs between camera module and SOC

    • Have you tried installing google camera app on the Nokia ?

Some of the discussion below for the app link

      https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-8-1/themes/google-cam…

I have put on 7 plus and 8.1, great photo results compare to stock camerA

      • Already have GCam, but you shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to get additional features. Another is night-sight, do they bother updating the software on their existing phones? nope, you have to buy a whole new phone for that.

        • +1

Already have GCam, but you shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to get additional features.

But you're not, you're just installing software that enables features you'd like.

Have you used a Windows, Mac, or Linux PC with a 'raw install'?
Or better yet, Have you ever installed Android on your own hardware?

They really don't do much until you add the apps you'd like to use.

  • Amazing timing on this post, my Nokia 8 just developed a faulty microphone.
