Sony XAV-AX1000 Apple Carplay Head Unit $348 @ Autobarn

160

Installed one in my prado 2000 model. wish i did it from day one. i prefer this over xav 5000 as there is a physical dial so I change the volume without taking my eyes off the road.

Note apple car play only not suited for android users (like everything else - fight me)

  • How much and where do you buy it from?

  • No price in title.

Very limiting having Carplay only, no Android Auto

    Only $1 more @ SCA

  • How much $$ to get it installed?

I'm not sure i would trust autobarn with anything.

But for example on his 2000 Prado you want to pair this with a reverse cam (or you're missing the whole point of ICE large screen).

So the big pain is running a cable from the rear to the back. This is a major pain as you're pulling trim (and not in the way that's fun!).

I think $100 for installing a dual din + the cost of aeropro loom is fair. Less if you buy the radio from the installer.

      $200 for the camera install?

      • i'd like to install reverse camera one day but its after the fridge and roof top tent haha

      • +1

You can get wireless reverse cameras, but honestly, running the cable isn't hard. Just gotta open the trim with a plastic tool.

    • autobarn quoted $160. very easy to do yourself though. just need to buy correct wiring for plug and play. they sold me toyota dashboard kit as well which I didn't need.

    • I had a JVC unit installed and it cost me $150. A big footnote though, that was just for the installation. I also had to buy some extra assecories to make it work:
      - fascia for Mazda (50 bucks)
      - antenna adapter (10 bucks)
      - Harness JVC to ISO (10 bucks)
      - harness ISO to Mazda (10 bucks)

The unit actually came with harness JVC to ISO but without proper terminals, so it was easier just to buy a new one.

I was happy to pay for the installation as they also took care of the microphone placement and USB cable placement (drilling holes etc)

This has a resistive display, the 5000 has a capacitive display (like a phone). Not that it really matters, I went with resistive in the end and it's actually nice to get some flexibility when you press the screen.

    • yes, i was considering the 5000 because I thought the resistive display would be bad but I don't mind it at all.

  • +1

yeah just something to bear in mind, I personally cannot stand resistive screen.

I went with a Pioneer unit without physical dial, and thought it would be annoying, but actually found it not an issue. It's a screen button for vol up/down, however at bottom left so I just feel for the left bottom corner of Head unit, then I can find volume without taking eyes off road.

For many newer cars you can get the steering wheel controls to sync with these after market headunits so no need to worry that actual unit doesn't have a physical dial.

    • thats a fair point. my prado is 20 years old so i don't really need all the bells and whistles.

    • I don't have any issues - most functions through Siri voice anyway for me.

A SWC interface is required to get SWCs working with most head units. PAC make the best ones. However, Kenwood/JVC units have built-in OEM SWC capability so no kit required.

Yeah I got a JVC and it has a built-in steering wheel controller that works with most cars. Especially the Japanese brands.

  • i got same model 2-3 years ago and it works with both android auto and carplay, i wonder why they left out that part… similar price as well (discounted)

    • This model, the XAV-AX1000, does not support Android Auto. You may have the identical looking model with almost the same model number, XAV-AX100 (one less zero), which does support AA. See discussion on Reddit here.

      • you’re right. my bad. However the price was similar when i bought it after discount like this.

        🤟

  • I've been using the discontinued model XAV-AX100 for about 3 years - got it back then for $320 or $350 from SCA.
Can't believe this one doesn't support Android.

I DIY'ed my install with the Japanese Car-ISO-Sony harness, fascia kit, and PAC SWC - took about an hour to install.

Honestly have no complaints about the unit except for the clock - that always seems to be wrong by like, 30-90 mins until you plug your phone in and it corrects itself.
And the PAC SWC I used only let's me map 7 out of 8 buttons - when I map an 8th, the all the mappings get reset. So I just stick with 7.

If you're trying to justify the purchase (assuming missing Android Auto isn't a dealbreaker), you can spend $100's paying a fine for getting caught using your phone, or spend the money on yourself for a head unit.

Yeh I'm using the same AX100 model, cant believe the replacement not costs nearly 400 and doesn't come with Android Auto. Trying to find on for my in laws and the prices are ridiculous.

They use Androids so this wont work… considering some of the no name brands like Joying or ATOTO…. anyone use these and rate them?

Anyone can suggest wireless CarPlay model that’s not too expensive ? I can wait for deal
