I think we need to start down voting Facebook like we down vote News Corp

    • -1

We should start down voting the worst of the lot - Twitter.

    • +6

      be the change!
Neg reason: Issue with retailer: threat to society.

  • +7

    Absolutely not.

  • Get a Google Nest Hub Max?

    • I wanted to but it doesn't do Whatsapp or Messenger video calling.. :(

  • +3

I hate Facebook as much as the next guy but you can't argue that the average person uses Facebook for video calls and not another app.

    • Not one of my family or friends has ever Facebook called me. It’s WA or FaceTime

      • +4

Just FYI Whatsapp was bought by Facebook in 2014 (6 yrs ago)

Its very hard not to use a Facebook product when they own so many technologies.

        • +1

Ha I completely forgot about that!! So yeah I guess I do get FaceBook calls. Drat. They’re everywhere

    • you can't argue that the average person uses Facebook for video calls

WhatsApp and Discord I see used more.
      Especially when contacting people overseas

FYI yes WhatsApp is FB, but Discord isn't :)

      • You might need to get your head out of the clouds. Discord is far from mainstream when it comes to a userbase.

Try to explain to a grandparent how to contact you on Discord.

        • Maybe I'm the exception but none of my parents, grandparents or friend's parents or grandparents video call.

It's becoming a much more popular way to video call. Friends that is.
As for explaining? Literally click on the username or group name and press the 🎥 icon. What's hard about that?

          • @pennypincher98: You're the exception. The average person does not use Discord.

            • @YellowKnight: I also don’t know anybody who uses Facebook or what’sapp to video chat.
I have used FaceTime, google duo (or whatever it is called this week) and zoom with non-tech friends and family.
I’ve used zoom and slack and google with techy friends and colleagues.
I think there are really defined demographics which use different products, with limited overlap.
Only one of my kids even has a Facebook account, though they do have Insta.

  • Can we access YouTube on this?

  • +1

anyone know what the video quality is like on the portal and the TV?

    • It has a 12.5 MP camera

  • +7

This will help the facebook ads to better match what you say ;)

  • +3

I don't even know what this is.

    • Same here, I had not heard any press about facebook smart home products

    • Gosh exactly, why buy such this thing, cant you just your phone, or use chromecast to mirror to tv

    • Don't know about the tablet like devices, but the portal TV is a camera you attach to your TV so you can web chat to people.
The special feature it has is to track movement and zoom in on the people talking. It also has some advanced audio processing so that people on the other end can still hear you when you move around.

It looks like a good product. I was investigating it a few months back, but ultimately went with the Xbox One Kinect which has the same features but uses skype.

      • Looks like the Facebook portal supports zoom, which would make it useful for small business meeting room conferences.

  • But do we trust or believe the private by design features. Hmmmm

  • +8

So now you pay facebook to provide more of your data, NICEEEEE !!!!!

I've mentioned this in previous Deals for the Portal but a quick summary is that it's a great device.

The Portal "tablets" don't make sense to me as their purpose can be accomplished by a zillion other devices, but the Portal TV is quite unique. If there was a non-Facebook product that did the same thing I would have chosen it in a heartbeat.

You can turn the mic off and put the shutter over the camera if you're paranoid.

Every single person I have given a demo to while they were visiting my house has gone and bought one. The camera pan/zoom is amazing. The mic quality is amazing. The in-built AR and story features are fun for the kids.

If you're looking for something to connect parents/grandparents then this is a no brainer device you can whack in a living room.

      • Thanks for the review , sounds very good .

      • If you're looking for something to connect parents/grandparents then this is a no brainer device you can whack in a living room.

on parents tv or kids tv ? (if not both)

        • Both works well? I bought one for me and one for my parents so they could chat to my kids.

The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment.

As another commenter mentioned, neg reason is issue with retailer: threat to society.

Just another device to exploit your human rights

  • A$199 $99” This must be planned. Like Google Home mini it should be free.

Also: “Requires wireless Internet connection and Facebook or WhatsApp account.

Some features, including "Hey Portal", Facebook Watch, Facebook Gaming, Facebook Live and display settings aren't available when you set up your Portal with WhatsApp only or when a WhatsApp-only login exists on a shared device.
