What to Do with Telstra Wi-Fi Router?

Like most Telstra NBN users, I finally moved to another NBN reseller.

Now I am left with a Telstra WiFi router. What can I really do with it? My new WiFi router seems to have a poorer range, is there a way to unlock the Telstra router to possibly connect directly to the NBN modem or the LAN port of the current router? Or, just sell/recycle it?

Thanks!

  • Wifi range extender.

Heaps of youtube videos on this topic.

    • Tried but couldn't find any.

Would much appreciate if you could share a link or two.

        • None of those videos help.

I think @Joshminey is right about the VLAN ID tagging.

You can continue using the Telstra router, there's no lock in. I am doing that right now with my Telstra router (Technicolor) with my Launtel NBN. The ADSL credentials in your router will be unused, even if present.

    • You can on RSP’s that don’t use VLAN ID tagging like Launtel and Aussie Broadband but if your RSP uses VLAN ID tagging like TPG you can’t use it

What NBN reseller did you move to as it really depends on who you moved to if you can use the Telstra router

Incorrect afaik. The router doesn't do authentication behind the NBN connection box. If OP is happy with the WiFi coverage with the Telstra router, they can continue using it

Depends on the NBN technology you have + how they do it. FTTN specifically can options not available on all routers (e.g. VLAN settings for TPG based ISPs), and some different RSPs require other auth settings, dependent on the tech on top of that.

        • It's FTTC. I have moved to TPG.

@BendBridge: TPG use Vlan ID tagging so you won’t be able to use your Telstra modem as they don’t support Vlan ID tagging

        • That's interesting, is it only TPG from TPG's umbrella or meant to cover iiBorg et al too?

I know for sure the Telstra router works fine on Internode FTTN on their old system as that's what is running at my Dad's place (dunno about the new Internode system with the perpetual $59 50/20 for 6mths offer, they claim it is different internally so perhaps that's TPG based?).

  • What to Do with Telstra Wi-Fi Router?

It makes a great door stop…
It even works through an outage.

  • 0P already supplied the two obvious solutions. Pick one.

if it is a technicolor very high chance you root and unlock additional features, although it should work out of the box with most other providers

i rooted mine to unlock voip

for vlan id iirc results were mixed if you can might have to ask ppl on the forum

it's actually very capable hardware as you have noticed with the wifi range
