Apparently we are exploring the option to visit North Korea.

If Scomo and KJU have their way. Just imagine… us all holding hands and singing Kumbaya

  • i wish this were serious,' i'd go in a heartbeat

    • Must be nice to live somewhere you can mingle at the pub and hug your buddies.

All North Korean travel is via carefully curated, state-sponsored tours, so you'd be directly funding one of the most oppressive regimes on the planet.

Yeah - Scomo never said North Korea. He said Korea and North Asia. The whole North Korea part is made up by the journalist.

Although, I would be interested in going there if the opportunity arose.

Now Trump is out, ScoMo's only mate is KJU because everyone else is pressuring him on climate change.

FYI prior to COVID you can visit North Korea, via china.

    Family members went. AMA?

    • +2

Yeah, I don’t know why this would be a big thing. One of my co-workers visited in 2018 or 2019.

    • Just the DMZ or an arranged tour in NK?

      • the latter

    • +1

      Did they come back alive

      • +1

of course, had a good time.

        • They did better than Otto Warmbier then.

          • @Almost Banned: You get warned in advance what to do (and what not to do). It's a guided tour, and the rules are clearly spelled out.

There were americans on the trip (including a reporter), none ended up arrested.

Had a friend that visited NK two years ago. All went well but traveling around other countries afterwards has been 'interesting' since. For example two trips to the USA since then have resulted in several hours of in-depth questioning by Homeland security upon arrival. He has also said he's had a few 'frustrations' entering a couple of European countries.
I cracked up after his first trip to the US. I said what the hell did he expect? Lmfao

      • very odd, family hasnt had the same issue.

Went in as an organised group tour (which included americans + travel journalists!),

    • Yes please, an AMA would be great.

Some questions to get it going:

      • Where exchanged currency? (And was it AUD to KPW or AUD-RMB-KPW)
      • Visa/Mastercard accepted?
      • Was the cuisine similar to Sth Korean dishes?
      • Cost of food etc
      • Interesting physical differences between Sth Koreans. I.e. no plastic surgery
      • Where got visa approval (in China or Russia?)
      • It's all done through https://koryogroup.com/ - you go in through china.

Chinese RMB. afaik you cant have NK cash (illegal). I'm fairly sure they went to china with USD and exchanged to RMB locally

        No visa, atm etc.

Food was all provided. you only spend money on booze, gifts, tips.

There are quite a few blogs and such that go into explicit detail, lots of tourists go.

        They've never been to SK

Rules are clearly spelled out. i.e. when finished reading a newspaper, you fold it so the leader's face isnt folded, and you put it in a special place. you dont just toss it in the trash.

Same with photos of statues, you can stand in the pic, but your body cant be covering the statue.

        • Nice detail here.

There are a few tour companies that arrange travel to NK actually.

Ironically enough, it's probably one of the safest international trips you can make. It goes without saying that crime is non-existent there for western tourists.

US citizens should be only slightly wary about their actions while on a tour there though, depending on the political climate at the time of visitation.

Western tourist dollars (from these guided tours) are an extremely small proportion of NK's GDP, so it probably comes down to personal principles on wanting to visit or not.

          • @ttam87: They enjoyed the trip, the expectations are very clearly laid out on their website, and during the trip. It's very guided/scripted, but that's what they expected.

I'm a bit jealous I couldn't go at the time, but one day. I'd definitely go during the games.

I think much of the drama is around speculation / pop culture. In the end, it's a dictatorship with a poor economy.

As an example, the website FAQ asks if your hotel room is bugged. The answer is that the government wouldnt want to listen to hours of inane tourist chatter, multiplied by the tens of thousands of visitors a year.

            • +1

@Davo1111: Haha yeh the first thing I did was check the room for any listening devices (out of curiosity more than anything).

Even if they are there (which it seems they aren't), I think you just don't care after a little while anyway, as you aren't there to be culturally insensitive so you don't worry.

  • knock on door We are the CIA, you have a mission..

    • For your information, I know this is an attempt to Honeypot or Honeydick me Agent Lacey…. Ahh James Franco and Seth Rogen

  • It's never been illegal to go to the DPRK. The difficulty is getting entry as you must go through a tour agent and stay on tour.

  • I thought this was hilarious:

Although as mentioned earlier, travel to NK is not particularly a new thing?
I'd assumed they've been ravaged by Covid, so not particular on my want-to-go-to list.

Why travel all that distance to North Korea when you can come to Victoria for the same experience of oppression - we have our own version of Kim Jong-un, he's called Dictator Daniel Andrews

    • you can come to Victoria for the same experience of oppression

lol, havent seen some cool statues in vic

      • -3

YET - believe me Dictator Dan is working on how to make it happen

        • I am pal.

  • If you have a shortwave radio tune in to 6400khz you will pick up a station from Pyongyang. Plays classical music and also has news updates.

  • Scomo is mentally average at best, sharp, savvy or intelligent are not his big points.

He can kiss US arse like no other however, and Australia is basically a US satellite state moving forwards

    • Agree, his recent haemorroidal relocation to Biden’s fundamental orifice was masterful, showed vast experience. Clearly is an exemplar for all shades of Australia’s political landscape.

  • Worked for Samsung South Korea from 2007-2013 prior to coming to Australia and visited NK 3X. If you follow the rules, there would be no problems and you will have a great time. NK is not as scary as some people think. In fact, the place is so safe. Don’t believe the media.

What is so wrong with that? Why are you advocating your sick ideology and vitriol attempting to muster like minded uneducated individuals?

    • This. I don't know why we bother entertaining dumb people.

  • Cool
Just tell yank jokes & you'll be fine :)
    enjoy
