Changing the console's region does nothing, depends on the region of the account it's being activated on.
You may be right, Do I keep my original account or do I have to keep switching accounts to play the game. Seems like alot of work.
Nah, if the game is installed on one account, then everyone else on the console can play it. I did it a lot with PS4 games (especially the ps plus freebies), should be the same for Xbox.
I just created a new account via using my VPN and made my country the US. Tried the key and it stated it was already redeemed. I've emailed them for a refund. Highly doubt they will. My own fault taking a risk.

I used a VPN set to US on my PC, then went to https://redeem.microsoft.com/ and once I was logged into my account entered code and downloaded to Series X. Just make sure you are in the US site, check bottom left corner for region
Just an update, the company gave me an refund. But good to know for next time.
