@taki: You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
Android phones has always been the easiest to break into and that’s not even a secret.

        • +1

They just bash people and force them to unlock the iPhone in front of them.
Not sure what they do with it after that but these guys are not exactly bright.

      • As I understand it VicPol says there are no gangs in Melbourne anyway. Only Youth Groups.

And the youth groups are too canny to try and lift a traceable and lockdownable phone.

              @jv: yeah right lol

      • +1

        get a job

Just because one says no to a phone that is priced at $2k does not automatically mean they don't have a job. I have a job, and can easily afford this phone, but I'd rather have that cash it sit in an account and accrue interest. Not everyone wants to take part in the latest fad, you know?

        • not sure if you noticed recently, interest rates have tanked and you'd be better off getting financial advice from qualified people since there are talks about inflationary figures.

          • @slowmo: I have an accountant, yes. And I've got another car to write off based on her advise. Not sure what exactly you're getting at here.

            • @CocaKoala: Depending on what account you are talking about, putting money in it right now is as losing money. That’s what I’m getting at. And it’s not necessarily a better option at splurging on a depreciating “asset”.

              • @slowmo: Ah, ok. It's in the Macquarie account. I got a good fixed rate deposit deal months ago and it's in that account. Will probably get it out when the promotional interest rate period expires.

    • I can see from your profile pic you're very old school. :)

      • +1

        I had very old teachers.

Was just about to comment that it's not $2k. Only $1949.99, but then realized the useless Costco membership is nearly exactly the discount off RRP… Crazy

If you look at it as a usage$/hour, a $2k phone would be low cost compared to other gadgets

      • +1

$2k phone would be low cost compared to other gadgets

        Compared to a 65" TV ?

    • Omfg, 2k for a phone is insane. How is this normal.

Strangely suddenly fell for no reason on iPhone launch? lol

      • Hahah if only it was insured. I was always planning to upgrade this launch anyway. However it was 4 weeks ago… It was a long 4 weeks with a iphone 7 that immediately slowed down upon upgrading to iOS14

        • +1

14 was crap even on my 11

If you buy JB Hi Fi gift cards for 4% off (eg: through RACQ) it's pretty close.

Personally seeing as the 'base' model is now 128GB that's big enough for me.

    • TCN still has 5% cashback via Shopback if you want to consider

      • How fast are they with the cards though? Will suck if you get the cards and pre-order is now a 8 week wait for a $100~ discount you have to wait 60 days to 'verify'.

        • I chose digital card, it went through my email in 1 minute. I did mine this morning and head straight to my local JB to use for ip12 pro max :)

  • +1

    Worth upgrading from my 6?

    • +3

Definitely. Will be a huge improvement.

      • +4

Why not a iPhone 11 for nearly half the price? Still a huge improvement and use the rest of the money for a holiday instead of taking photos of instant noodles at home with a 12 Pro Max lol

    • +2

That'll be a massive upgrade. I went from a 7 to an 11 last year and I thought that was huge!

    • +4

Yes, unless you're happy with your 6, then keep using it.

    • +2

These were the days when you could easily buy flagship iphones for less than $1000

    • +1

Camera, OLED and bigger screen size, so worth upgrading.

    • +2

      It's twice as good

    • The biggest performance jump was from 7 to X.
For 6 to 12, very worth it.
If you like taking photos with your phone, pro max is the only model support Sensor-Shift Optical Image Stabilization.

This price cost almost as much as good gaming pc…

    • +3

Paid less for our gaming PC this year. And that has a 24” screen. 😜

      • You could also get an iPhone 12 mini and PS5.

      • +1

Does your screen go up to 1200 nits? ;-)

        • +8

          Only when it catches fire

        • -1

That would be waste as you have good lighting. Can your phone get 24" screen? Yes, via Galaxy DEX.

      • +1

Does it fit in your pocket? :)

        • -1

          Yes - Galaxy Note with DEX & 4K 32" via USB-C

    • +2

Sweet. Put a $1500 gaming PC in your pocket and make phonecalls with it

    • +5

omg your gaming PC almost costs as much as a runaround car. Imagine that!

    • +3

Yeah deff true, but personally i used my phone much more than my gaming PC.

It's like all products really, you could spend $600 on a gaming PC or $5k. Depends what you want.

The one good things i find with iPhones is they keep their value quiet well. So you can recover quiet a bit of the cost when you upgrade.

      • -6

Smartphones are even better. You get much better value when you buy last years flagship than this years iPhone ;)
Why would you sell your phone if it was that good? False economy?

        • +2

Personally i usually do buy last year phones second hand, but the last one i got had it's water protection comprimised so it recently broke. Between that the 11 Pro Max's still selling for $1300 and having a $500 JB voucher i figured i would go new this time.

It's not a false ecomony is an asset depreciates less than a comparable cheaper one. Which anroid phone do tend to: https://www.bankmycell.com/blog/cell-phone-depreciation-repo…

I would say if your looking for value, you may as well buy and few years old iPhone and replace the battery when you need to. They tend to get software updates for 5+ years.

          • -2

@blackfalcon53: Galaxy flip/note/s/A51 10 & newer now get 3y OS+ 2y security patches. With them, you get more capable phone that has longer future proof functional value.
I gave my >6-years-old Note4 to my 85y old father overseas & he is extra happy (1st time with smartphone). He just replaced the battery (removable back), & can still use the features that iPhone still doesn't have - remote IR for TVs/etc, UV/SpO2/heart rate sensor, S-Pen, microSD, etc.
I sold my Galaxy Note2 few years ago for $200 & it was still used last year (Samsung had replaced the board, after 3y use, free - long time ago :)
As iPhone users, I'm stuck with S-pen & have no much choice but pay iPhone prices to Samsung. I wish Huawei did more convenient S-pen.

The reason I avoid iPhones (& I support many being in IT) is for ethical reasons. Apple is experienced in manipulating psychological weaknesses with very reduced set of features/functions, ie. If you pay for BMW you don't want to get Mini Morris & think it must be top because it's under BMW brand.

        • Lol false economy. Marketing!
What phone do you have? Something amazing you bought years ago that you still stand by?

    • Holding their value is for sure an upside with iPhones.

  • -4

That crap phone with a notch is the same price as a macbook pro? Whaaaaaat.

    • +7

Shhh now, Apple users will tell you it's the finest invention humanity has yet produced and that they would be happy at twice the price and that they like the notch, prefer not to have the power adapter or EarPods included and enjoy shopping for chargers anyway…

      • +1

        Well, we Apple user have all things Apple, including USB C wall charger from iPad Pro. No biggie. ;_;

      • +6

I must applaud Android users of being so caring of the iPhone users so much so that they are more worried about loosing the charger than actual user who arent worried at all, on every iPhone 12 thread. Thanks for your commitment.

        • +1

more worried about loosing the charger

          What are you talking about?

        • +2

Many dont give two sh*ts whatever Apple want to charge their user base for whatever they get. What they care about is the precedence it sets to other phone makers that if Apple can get away with it why can't they.

Like it or not this is for Apple users too.

It will force the manufacturers to price accordingly and stop the BS they pull like "we are doing this for the environment" and charging you like wounded bull for it.

Anyone who don't see it for anything other than getting less and getting charged more for it are clearly on the wrong website.

          • +1

@xoom: So the non Apple users can vote from their pocket and not buy any phones from makers who do not have chargers included? Can they not? Unlike Apple they have 100's other also ran's producing almost the same phone, with the same basic hardware (cpu/ram/ etc) running the same software with different levels of user data mining underlying and then some on top. I thought more choices meant more competition and more competition should be better for consumer. Who knows even some Apple user may leave Apple because they did not have a charger in the box never mind that I have 3 useless iPhone chargers and more numbers of cables lying around because I have been using wireless charging.

Would I mind a discount of $50 on the price of the phone for having no headphones and charger? Absolutely not but we live in times where a Samsung flagship phone costs more than $1300 US

            • +1

              @dealsucker:

we live in times where a Samsung flagship phone costs more than $1300 US

And yet it comes complete with a charger in the box. What you get for an iPhone paying even more?

If you cannot see it reeking of nickel and diming from Apple. What else will you let Apple get away with and continue to overcharge you?

              • @xoom: No iPhone is $1300 USD, not even the most expensive one. Second, it is too hard to understand that I and perhaps other iPhone users dont really care about charging bricks. I have a few from my past iPhones and I am using none of them and so are the cables.

What I can see is that the iPhone box is now 30% of its original volume which means more phones can be packed in the same area which means more iPhone can be shipped on a given plane/ship/truck and that is true across the supply chain. I can see the impact it will have on the transportation and therefore CO2 emissions and its not really an inconvenience as I wasnt going to use it anway. That said I also not be buying the iPhone 12 because my XS from more than 2 years back is almost as fast or faster than it was on day 1 and it will continue to get updates for atleast 3 more years.

Whether Apple makes more money or not is irrelevant as long as the customers/users see the value in the product. Samdung not only sells you expensive phones, it supports them less, has advertisement in first party apps, does not have customer service which is nearly as good.

                • +1

@dealsucker: you know the now separated charger will still have to be shipped along with the phones on the same plane/ship/truck right? Granted it may not be one to one ratio but chargers will still take up space.

Or worst on a separate plane/ship/truck.

All Apple managed to do is make more money from their consumers.

                  • +1

@xoom: What percentage of people do you think it is going to be? Will you stop buying Android phones if they stop coming with chargers?

                    • +1

@dealsucker: I will buy another Android phone that includes it. Doubt all of them will remove it.

For the record my phones either get run into the ground or end up as a hand me down.

Also if Apple truly are for the environment they can exclude the charger in the box but redeemable at the Apple store if one needs one. So those that say I wasn't going to use it. Then its ok for you. But for those that do. They get one.

          • +1

            @xoom:

get. What they care about is the precedence it sets to other phone makers that if Apple can get away with it why can't they.

            Only leaders set precedences?

I mean I don’t see people walking away from Samsung when they increase the prices of their flagships to match apple flagships.

            They still buy a Samsung.

Samsung could also follow pixel and iPhone patching for their OS for phones older than 2 years as well.

            And here we still are.

It’s not just android vs iOS. People are selectively choosing to ignore the same shitty practices Samsung does to their phones as well as Apple.

Why is it any of a surprise when these manufacturers continue their own trajectory ?

            • +1

              @slowmo:

              Only leaders set precedences?

Not always. Precedence just means the first to do something. Apple is not a leader selling smart phones yet they set a precedence in breaking the $1000 price point which a few followed eg samsung.

I mean I don’t see people walking away from Samsung when they increase the prices of their flagships to match apple flagships.

Samsung actually sold less of their flagship phones than projected.

      • +1

Apple haters are the true definition of cringe.

happy at twice the price and that they like the notch

I like FaceID. Far superior than other biometric features

prefer not to have the power adapter

What would I do with the 15 or so USB chargers I have already? And the iPhone charger I currently have?

prefer not to have the … EarPods

Meh that's a pain, sure, but as shown by their own research (and my own anecdotal experience from working in I.T. for a blue chip company, where iPhones are standard issue) majority of people do not use them.

        • -1

FaceID superior in what? You buy the phone to use it, no to unlock it in 1 sec. In all aspects, iPhones have restricted functionality & missing features.

15 inferior 5W USB chargers vs 25W charger are no competition. The same USB-C port has USB 3.2 20x faster speed & 2-way charging capability for any device in the future. Give up here.

Then all other missing features, like microSD for up to 1TB extended memory for local back-ups, like any mature business would do.
But, iPhones are not built for productivity - compared to Galaxy Note & many others outside of the walled garden.
I used smartphones since 2001 & I disqualify any solution without SD card. I can simply insert the microSD from prosumer videorecorder to watch on the larger phone screen in any situation regardless of internet or cables or load huge content up to 1TB from PC via microSD & go on vacation. I can read from NTFS 3TB + drive directly via USB-C or connect to 4K monitor/kbd/mouse with DEX.
All these are dreams for iPhones.

          • @taki: Please do not cite your history of use as expert opinion. It’s still just an opinion.

Please don’t pretend that sd cards, cf cards and formats are made the same and can easily load and play on a Samsung phone without paying through the nose on several apps and then realising you still have to transcode before really playing on a Samsung.
Like many other people who has used phones since end of last few decades can attest.
            It really dilutes your argument.

I own both android and iOS phones and I can’t help cringing at all these mention of 4K and dex throughout these posts when obviously majority of people buying smartphones don’t care for.just Look at the sales figures.

I get it, you think iPhones is not suitable for your use case. Brigading about it is just cringy.

    • -1

Mate. It is a top-notch phone.

  • Size-wise, it's not that much bigger than the bigger Android phones out there.
Getting it with Costco also gets you a 90 day 'change of mind' guarantee.

    • Do they charge you a restocking fee if it's used?

  • +1

    $70 saving ?

    • Was hoping for a bit more…

  • +8

Hmmm this.. or a PS5, Pixel 5, a 144hz monitor and a romantic dinner with my wife.. hard choice

    • +8

Have a dinner and decide there.

    • +1

      This

    • Not really that hard…

      • +1

He will find out after dinner

    • +7

Personally I'm taking the PS5, Pixel 5, 144hz monitor and dinner with your wife.

But your call is up to you.

      • Why would you want to have a dinner with his wife?

      • +1

thanks, the longer the better. ps5 gonna be sweet

    • depends if sex comes with it

    • +1

I suggest a good lawyer…. because she probably could have all of those sans you if she finds out ;)

  • +1

I'm going to wait for the Pro Max Extreme.

    • That would be an environmental price of $5000.

Comes in a recycled paper wrap. No box and cable.

  • -2

imagine shelling out for a 2k phone when you can get similar specs for less than half incoming negs from the apple sheep

    • +6

Can you back up your statement with an example of "similar specs for less than half"?

      • -4

any of the equivalently speced samsung flagships

        • But then you have to settle for using Android on a Samsung phone with all of its bloatware. You have maybe 3-4 years before it noticeably slows down. My iPhone 7 is still as quick as the day I got it.
