[NSW] 4x $25 Vouchers to Every Adult to Spend in Restaurants/Cultural Institutions

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Not sure if this counts as a deal, however I’m sure my fellow Ozbargainers will be very pleased by this freebie! Sounds like a good way to get people out spending again, some classic Keynesian style fiscal stimulus.

“Anyone over the age of 18 will receive four x $25 vouchers through the Service NSW mobile app.

Two can be used on food at restaurants, cafes and clubs and the other two can be used for entertainment activities, such as cultural institutions, performing arts, cinemas and amusement parks.

The vouchers cannot be used on retail, alcohol, gambling or cigarettes and can only be used at COVID-19-safe businesses that sign on to the scheme.”

Mod note: The scheme is reported to be rolled out 'early 2021' without any definite start date, and does not satisfy our deal posting guidelines for upcoming deals. It is therefore moved to forums for discussion. It can be re-posted at a later date when it begins or when the specific start date is known.

Thanks OP but we will be waiting a little while before getting these.

    From the website:
The NSW Government will run a trial of the program in the Sydney CBD over December with the full program formally launched in early 2021.

    • would be nice to know where we can sign up for the trial.

      • +4

my guess is the "Service NSW app" :/

        • mmm sounds like a good deal - maybe they just want to give us $100 worth of vouchers, perhaps they want us to install the app?

According to Google Play, this app has access to:
          * Camera
          * Photos / Media / Files - modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
          * Precise location (GPS and network-based)
          * Full network access
          etc…

Perhaps I'm being paranoid, and shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth?

          • @RedHab: i thought you can disable those access in Privacy setting

          • +4

@RedHab: @RedHab: Most of that should be to allow for easy covid check-ins at restaurants and the like

          • @RedHab: Photos and storage are for adding regos, location is for covid check-in etc

As always you can disable those settings anyway

You'll find about 90% of apps on your phone want similar but for some reason people don't mind giving Candy Crush all the info. Hahaha

          • @RedHab: You can also get a digital copy of your drivers licence through the app. You use your camera to scan a QR to sign into RSLs where they would normally want a scan of your drivers licence.

          • +1

@RedHab: Well it needs location access as it gives you alerts on bushfires, storms, covid check in etc etc. It can hold you e-license (drivers only not gun etc) its not just for food voucher delivery. I use it and haven't carried a wallet ever since the e-license thing came out at the beginning of last year

Great initiative. Even the homeless people will be able to sit and drink their fancy overpriced java in a real cafe.

      • +3

        Wow. Get a life buddy.

      • +11

If you have a driver’s licence or proof of identity from RMS, all your details are with them. What are you worrying about? They know where you live, when you were born, etc.

If government wants to track you, together with ATO database, your income status etc also be tracked.

To be honest, it’s pretty useless to think you can beat the government regarding information privacy. They have mostly everything from the time you were born.

I would rather trust our government over Facebook, Twitter, Google etc. btw, if you use google search, even without logon, they already figured out who you are via your search habits.

I will take my free $50 from the government thank you very much.

I will take my free $50 from the government thank you very much.

          $100

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks! Even better!! I just gotta read the title properly!!! Haha

        • That’s the thing. If “Minority Report” ever becomes a thing, my logs within google would have sentenced me to death a long time ago.

          • +18

@NWLikeShopping: Oh you're one of those people. No wonder… Go spend your jobseeker handouts on some tinfoil hats won't you

            • +2

              @xers:

              Go spend your jobseeker

He better not be getting jobseeker, if he is then the government will know where he lives.

              • @onetwothreefour: Hahaha true. Wonder if his "old online truism" applies to this one.

              • @onetwothreefour: Do you need the service nsw app for jobseeker? If not you have missed his point

          • +9

@NWLikeShopping: I've never understood this level of sub-clinical paranoia. Who cares if they know where you go, what you do, who you see, etc? I've never worried myself, if people want to spy on me, go ahead. There's more distress in worrying about being spied upon, than actually being spied on.

            • +1

@Glorion: But someone might find out that you're a closet Melissa MacArthy fan!

            • @Glorion:

I've never understood this level of sub-clinical paranoia.

Untreated mental health issues more often than not unfortunately.

@NWLikeShopping: You are absolutely full of shìt.

            • -3

@b2dz: Nope, I'm absolutely an IT privacy advocate.

I know that folks who know less about big data, and young people in general, don't consider such easy govt access to tracking data a problem.

              But some of us do.

              • @NWLikeShopping: Doesn't have access to a phone that can install apps, but can troll the internet on OzB….

Perhaps if you get a job and help the economy I'd give you my share of $100.

              • @NWLikeShopping: I doubt you know much about Big Data because it is not targeting individuals like how you are thinking.

I don’t even think you are working in IT industry because you said you lost your job. Guess what, IT industry is one of the industry that is blooming during COVID.

          • @NWLikeShopping: We already know you live in Sydney. You willingly shared that publicly. With a little effort, we will know everything about you.

      • +2

Great, this initiative is probably for people who already contribute to the economy.

      • +1

I doubt there is anything that can regain my faith in humanity after reading that. I'm speechless.

      • "If you're getting something online AND not handing over dollars for it, what you're handing over is YOU."

        That doesn't apply here. Maybe:

"If you're getting something from the government for free, what you're handing over is a debt to be paid back by future generations and tax payers".

  • +2

"….The Out and About voucher scheme will cost the Government $500 million …".
The government pays? No.The tax payer (also known as me and you) pays for this. Sorry, rather is forced to pay .

    • +5

You could say that about literally everything…

    • +1

You must be fun at parties…

    • +1

When you buy some new shoes or book a holiday, do you say 'my employer was forced to pay for this', because they pay you an income?

      • I have a contract with my employer. I agree to work for him, he agrees to pay me.

    • +4

Not sure why you are negged, it's a valid point

      • +2

Reality is not very popular these days.

  • +18

lol cultural institutes…but we don't even have any culture

    • +3

A little lost are you? Perhaps a visit to the yoghurt aisle will make you feel better.

      • It's French for YUM!

    • It'd be great if they were referring to Bunnings and snags :D

  • +22

And now we'll see stuff costing exactly $25. Instead of less than that.

    • +8

Yep. I remember when the Vic government introduced a $1000 “subsidy” to get your car converted to LPG… a year earlier I had my car converted for $1500, my mate took the exact same model car to get done at the same garage a year later and was quoted, you guessed it - $2500. When the subsidy was gone, LPG installation prices stayed right where they were :(

In this case, the consumer may get the immediate benefit of “free” goods and services, but the gouging will artificially establish a new acceptable price point and we’ll all lose out in the end.

  • Two can be used on food at restaurants, cafes and clubs and the other two can be used for entertainment activities, such as cultural institutions, performing arts, cinemas and amusement parks.

Actually they cannot be combined for two people dining with each other. So potentially 8 businesses benefit from couples. Pretty good!

    • +2

I am sure that there will be a loop hole where me and a friend can dine together-apart, like in a food court.

      • Fair call

      • +3

Yes. But that's fair. It's mainly to help the small businesses, not us.

        • -1

There's better ways to help them. Payroll tax, stimulus, etc. This is marketing.

          • @Lord Fart Bucket: Sure. There's always better ways. They chose this way. Something is better than nothing

  • +37

Their mates get $30m for land worth $3m , some other mates buy land worth $38m and sell back to Liberal government for $58.5m within 7 month making$15.5m but opal fares goes up, incompetent TfNSW secretary keeps his jobs with years of scandal and day light corruption…and yes we give free voucher to win some votes…. All this free money spend will be paid with job cuts and poor services in school and hospital…so nothing to be happy about this one…!

If they really want to help then give voucher for people to buy groceries, pay electricity bills, pay rego, pay for council or water bills….!

    • +5

How about a voucher that converts to a donation for the Liberal party so maybe they will cut us in on their next mates deal.

    • They do have vouchers for electricity and gas bills.

      • No, they don't have. Utility voucher are provided only to pensioners and Centrelink recipient. So totally different to voucher discussed here.

        • That is incorrect, it's available to anyone in financial hardship.
          https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/energy-accounts-p…

          • @cooni: financial hardship is different to voucher discussed here. voucher discussed here is given to every adult whether they have financial hardship or not including the minister currently questioned for corruption !

  • +19

This offer happened in the UK. Unfortunately the virus spread …

    • +5

Yep, not to mention most NSW hot spots have been restaurants/clubs. Not to mention we're going into one of the most social times of the year were there'll be a lot more interaction between people and people are more likely to let their guard slip. Part of me thinks it's a good idea, another part thinks it's a terrible idea.

    • +5

      This is rather shortsighted.
      The UK's offer is below:

Use the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme at a participating establishment:
-to get a 50% discount on food or non-alcoholic drinks to eat or drink in (up to a maximum of £10 discount per diner)
-every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 3 and 31 August
-as many times as you like

It came at a time there were still ~1000 cases per day. At the end of the scheme there were still ~1000 cases. The massive ballooning of cases happened from different decisions.

Compare that to Australia atm. SA has been the only state with community transmission in the last 10 days.

NSW's "manage and live with the virus" approach is a lot better than other states who barracade themselves in every time an active case is announced.

    • +3

Pretty sure the goal is not to stop the spread, the goal is to manage the spread.

  • +2

Real 'life of the party' posts coming out here..

  • +3

WHAT?! Liberals handing out free money!!!
    Oh the hypocrisy

    • +2

Spot on. Unfortunately its rife everywhere. The age we live in.

Gonna sell mine for $70. All hail the new Homr

    • I will sell you mine for $65 and you can re-sell them at $70

    • +1

Sell it to LNP members for $80…!

      • +4

        Don’t you mean $800?

    • +2

      New Homr? You wish

  • +6

I hope there won't be venues who do the discriminating move and make "Out and about" menus with $25 lunches that probably cost $10. Or slap on many conditions to use the voucher etc.

  • Can you sign up fake names to get more vouchers?

    • +4

      Are you an LNP member?

They seem to like handing out our money to their connections or turning a blind eye to corruption.

      • +2

They are not just turning blind eye to corruption but also giving their house keys to corrupt mates 😉

      • +1

Damn, maybe I should run for pre-selection now you put it like that.

    • +2

This message was authorised by Broden of Ozbargain Australia.

    • Anyone doing that is a thief in my eyes.

      • Like the NSW Liberal government and their cronies?

        • You'd be naive to think it's only the NSW libs and their cronies…

  • +10

The UK did something similar. The restaurants ended up rorting the scheme. It also ended up spreading COVID like wildfire with the number of people taking advantage of it. Now they're back in lock-down.

It's a big waste of taxpayers' money at the end of the day.

    • +10

It's waste of money if done by labor and if done liberal then economy booster.

You are correct restaurant owner will not just increase prices but they will buy the voucher for $10…. without selling anything….! So all those liberal volunteer will start food stall (fake) in market and start buying voucher for $10 and sell to their liberal government for $25 …😃

    • Strongly, this..

There are really so few upsides to this scheme that the story is that they dared to introduce such a multi-faceted rort, not that it's such a great thing.

However, a note of reality: Some weeks ago when it was leaked that NSW was working on such a scheme, people voiced concerns about the spike of COVID cases in the UK corresponding with the take-up of their dining-out vouchers. NSW govt's response was that they were looking at having the NSW vouchers apply to takeaway as well as eat-in. If that's made clear to people, maybe what happened in the UK won't happen here because people will be more cautious, especially in light of Adelaide's recent events in the news.

      • +2

maybe what happened in the UK won't happen here

Honestly after your earlier stunt not sure why I'm bothering to reply but you realise Australia's active cases and transmission rates are nowhere near that of the UK?
Our cases are coming from overseas travellers, and outbreaks are occurring from quarantine hotels. Not locally. Completely different ball game.

        • +2

You realise how exponential spread works?

Did you notice how one case in a quarantine staff member became 17 cases in Adelaide recently?

I'm sure that the large family associated with the hotel quarantine virus escape wouldn't ever DREAM of eating out if they lived in NSW, of course. :-) So there's absolutely no way you could get a restaurant cluster from just one son of the security guard. (Spoiler: oh, yeah there is.)

Some months back both the UK and Victoria had 700 cases daily.

Victoria locked down and beat it. The UK didn't, and printed restaurant vouchers.

          • +1

            @NWLikeShopping:

Some months back both the UK and Victoria had 700 cases daily.

Either you don't know how to read statistics or are purposely manipulating them.
Victoria had one day of 700 cases mainly in a very localised area.
UK had many days above 700 cases reported widespread over 4 countries.

It's a lot easier to lock down a city the size of Melbourne.
They actually didn't print restaurant vouchers, they gave a 50% incentive. It led to no substantial growth in cases.

    • +1

      Agreed. This is dumb

  • +5

we'll see Gumtree adverts like these soon…

    FOR SALE:
    $50 For 4 x $25 Vouchers

    • Or eBay

    • +5

Given the requirement to use the Service NSW app, I suspect that the vouchers won't be transferable.

      • +1

        FOR SALE:
        $50 For 3 x $25 Vouchers*

*Seller will sit with the buyer for the meal

  • What counts as a cultural institution?

    • Brothels, my friend. Cultural experience.

      • ^^^ More of a primal experience for me.

        • +1

Well it's culture depending on the type of woman you go with, right? European, Asian, South American, etc.

          • @Munki: Yes I see.

I'd imagine it's all the same in the darken room.

            (I'll stop here, it's a G/PG forum this one)

      • +2

For $25? As they say, you get what you pay for!
