I’m tempted to buy it for my 2021 PS5 but I think I’d prefer the Samsung T5. From what I’ve read the T5 is a little quicker.
    Great price though.

For anyone unfamiliar with using an external device with a PS5.

UPDATE: We have now confirmed that you cannot store PS5 games on an external hard drive. You can only store PS4 games off an external hard drive, and you can also play PS4 games of it. Sony has said they are looking into potentially making it so that we can store PS5 games on an external hard drive, but it isn’t possible at the moment.

        Wow…

        Thanks for the heads up…

You can, but becuase of the speed of the PS5 its best not too. If you have PS4 games from the PS4 store etc, you can play them but load times are effected.

          • @Icedog1981: It'll affect the load times of PS4 games by reducing them maybe.

Even with the USB protocol related latency with external SSDs, they're still significantly faster than the HDDs that came with PS4s, especially original PS4s with their SATA 2 3Gbps interfaces.

      • Yeah. Hopefully in a future update they will let us store PS5 games on external storage. But regardless I have heaps of PS4 games to play.

    • I wouldn't be plugging in an external drive to my ps5 for a while, they're totally bricking PS5s when going into rest mode.

      • Yeah I’ve been reading about those issues on the Whirlpool PS5 threads. I haven’t got a PS5 yet, I have a 2021 EB preorder so hopefully the firmware will have been updated by then.

        • I'm going to wait a get a proper SSD for the second drive slot.

          • @Sidog: How much storage are you planning on getting?

            • @jallen89: I'd like at least a 2TB but I think that will be cost prohibitive for a while but i wouldn't bother with anything less than a 1tb drive.

              • @Sidog: 1tb would be a nice middle ground. I was tempted to buy the T5 500gb for $95 but 500gb wouldn’t be enough especially with all the PS4 games I plan to finally play.

    • Wait when they announce what's supported on the nvme slot, I think that's a better choice.

      • The internal expandable storage will most likely cost a lot more than an external SSD. Most of my games will be PS4 so increasing the internal storage isn’t that much of an issue for me. I currently have an OG 500GB PS4 so the PS5’s 850GB is a big step up for me 😀

    • You're mileage may vary. Sony recommends 10 Gbit/s (USB 3.1) for external storage, these drives are just USB 3.0 (5 Gbit/s)

      • I had no idea what they recommended but I know that quite a few people are using regular external SSDs and even HDDs for storing and playing PS4 games on their PS5. Seems to be quite a few reports of external storage drives crashing the system but I’m sure they’ll fix that in a firmware update.

  • 2tb in blue is slightly cheaper for mass storage $299

I don't want to open a can of worms, but I will, having bought 2 of each (seagate and wd), WD all day everyday.

  • Will this brick my PS5?

    • unknown, just make sure you don't use rest mode with external storage connected seems to be the messaging at the moment

      • seems the main culprits at the moment are Miles Morales and Call of Duty which I haven't got…

        • only thing i got is Miles Morales, could not secure ps5 :(

  • USB 3.0?
Prefer USB-C to get the SSD speeds.

    • +3

USB-C is just the physical connector, both it and USB-A can do up to 10 Gbit/s.

I made a DIY 2TB portable SSD for $299 using a WD Red M.2 SATA SSD from this deal in a Transcend CM80S enclosure.
Super sleek and works a treat!

2TB Blue Portable SSD for $299 is already that price at officeworks.

  • Been using the 2 TB version of this to store my PS4 games which is plug into the PS5. Been good so far. There are no issues maybe due to the system update yesterday for the PS5 that might stabilize and mitigate some issues. Speed is good, I'd test the speed in Windows and its giving me an average of 380MB/s so not too bad for the price but I got this cheap during Prime day.

  • Shame ya can't shove it into a console

  • Is that just me?
I am seeing $169.67 when I click into the link, is the deal expired?
