Covid Tips for SA from Victorians / Covid SA General Discussion

Just wondering if any Victorians got any good ozbargain type tips for the lockdown. Surely food business will be scrambling to dump stock. Where should I go (supermarket will be chaos… squared)?

I wish adjacent states could send a rapid response teams ( like 20% of capacity ) for testing as the Federal Gov tends to act too slowly . Obviously multiple donut days testing is not so essential as the hot spot .
Makes me sick seeing 11 hr queues when this is the biggest hotspot that can effect all of us . Yes we are Australian not State tribes .

    • +2

no f******* way id line up for 11 hours

    • +1

Yes we are Australian not State tribes .

      Annastacia Palaszczuk disagrees with you…

      • +1

Isn't it amazing how everyone turns on each other in a crisis.

      • -1

Mummy Anastacia isn't going to let us be locked down like the inferior states.

  • Thanks all, but i'm more looking for how to think different (as we Ozbargainers do).

For instance, people are lined up outside the shops at the moment…i'm putting in an online order.

What about pubs etc. Did they clear out food / beer before going in to lockdown? I'm thinking of grabbing a parmy / pint shortly ($15 at the local), and hoping to walk away with a couple of cheap pre made meals to stick in the freezer..again… stuff going to the shops!!

    That kinda advice?

    • Each to their own, but if it were me there, I wouldn't be going to the shops, or a pub, or anywhere else today that may be crowded; I would be staying away. The risk that is being managed doesn't start at midnight, it is already there.

Just act responsibly and the time will pass quickly enough, and you can then get back to those pubs and shops.

      • Yep. However, the pub was empty…and a source to get some supplies..thats pretty much my angle.

I think Covid has always been here ( as per poo pipe tests indicate), just not all people get tested. So I have operated under this assumption.

So the said pub has a nice outdoor area in full sun where I can give everything a nice UV irradiation. As I do with all delivery orders before touching…as the covid case here was spread via a surface.

  • Don't come to NSW.

    • Haha, its in your poo pipes, it's there. Keep acting like everyone has it anyway, it's all you can do. ..Did someone say something about an origin game ;)

    • +1

Ummmmm…..looks like it's your turn..hope it doesn't stuff up your xmas to badly.

am i the only person in the world who really couldn't care less if i ran out of dunny rolls. sure it ain't great but you wont die, and as long as you dont chew your nails. you be good

    • +2

Never bought TP in the last lockdown either mate. A 12 pack will last a bloke 3 yrs!

      • +1

when the march panic buying started, I looked and saw i was two rolls in to a 8 pack i bought before christmas. that got me through to the end of the first lockdown in july. then work did a thing where they sent a "basics" box from woolies every couple of weeks to stood down employees. that included a 12 roll pack which i received three times. i'm now 3 rolls in and have 33 in storage. this is gonna last me years. I also have about 7 years supply of vegemite at the rate i use it.

Routine is key. Keep up your daily routines. Don't be ashamed to feel sad or angry. It's normal to have these feelings because what you're going through isn't normal.

Online trivia nights with family/friends - we've been doing Isolation Trivia (free on Facebook, shared via Zoom to the group) on Tuesdays and Fridays since April.

Netflix/streaming services will be your best friend.

Just do you. Don't feel like you have to master a hobby or keep up with other people, just do what works for you.

    • This is great advice.

  • -5

    ViC advice??
NSW and QLD got busted thanks ViC and to the non-brain lying about being in Vic starting the toilet paper, rice and pasta war.
Seeing the way things are going so far, SA seems to be repeating ViC's mistake.

    NSW advice:

    • If you can, work from home. If you cannot, use those washable masks to save your pocket, and have sanitizer with you.
    • if you have no real reason to leave home, try not to. During this outages, you don't know if your neighbour was in infected suburbs, places, etc.

This will be enough to keep you and your family away from problems as much as possible even if you need to take public transport to work.

I just hope SA deals with this way better than ViC.

    • -1

Last time I checked nowhere else in the world has tamed a second wave as large as Vic's?

      • -1

@picklewizard many places had a second wave but what the ones that had terrible consequences have in common??

        Negligence!!

Melbourne had protests and so on during a worldwide pandemic, instead of isolation people were doing house parties, almost nobody was following the orders and yet they were against the cops using force.
ViC escaping the state going to NSW, QLD, basically, bringing problems to other states.
Do the bloody right thing in the first place and everything will be okay.

Adelaide is already in lockdown, nobody in or out just like NZ did.
Look NZ now, they managed this way better than Australia, Adelaide is following the same path and I don't doubt they will win this better than ViC.

        • Melbourne had protests and so on during a worldwide pandemic, instead of isolation people were doing house parties, almost nobody was following the orders and yet they were against the cops using force.

Oh ok I'm sure you have extensive evidence of this, especially since you're from out of state.

          • +3

            @picklewizard:

Oh ok I'm sure you have extensive evidence of this

            It was on TV.

            They are still protesting…

          • @picklewizard: @picklewizard are you living in a cave??

My home country that does not speak English had news all over the place about ViC and Melbourne. This was all over the place in so many countries like US, UK, JP, BR thanks to the non-brain people living in Melbourne so….

            • @ratoloko:

are you living in a cave??

No, I'm living in Victoria and you're talking out your arse?

Don't sit there and tell me how it was when I WAS LITERALLY HERE AND YOU AREN'T lol

  • +2

Right, well just went to the beach for a paddleboard and a swim. Pizza and a 6 pack to go from across the road and now heading home for 6 days of renovations. Maybe a big Webber cook up and excessive beverages on Sunday.
Stopped at shops on the way home. Only 2 people in it, grabbed everything i wanted. Whats the fuss?

  • +2

Avoid coles and Woolworths all the idiots go there to hord groceries. Go visit your local supermarket/market.

Keep pressure on the Government to be accountable and open shit up otherwise they will take the easy way out and keep you locked up forever, they need to learn to handle small out breaks like NSW did with out massive shut downs

    • Aren't the government actions driven by the numbers of positive cases detected daily, and related trends? Sure, we will need to manage outbreaks for months to come, but no-one actually wants lockdowns (even governments).

      • +2

Lockdowns win you elections (ask NZ)

        • If so, the federal Liberals must be dreading the next election here

    • I'm sure glad we didn't follow that sort of lunatic advice here in Melbourne.

With 700+ new cases a day, we locked down hard and beat the virus. France and the UK were dealing with similar numbers, but didn't lock down. Now they're drowning in covid-19 infections.

  • +2

Thankfully your government seem to have learnt not to wait for hundreds of cases like in Victoria before locking down. So it should just be a short stint, plus opening hours of shops isn’t limited, so you have more hours to shop and less congestion, something that occurred here in Victoria when we were locked down making social distancing more difficult to achieve.

Just don’t hoard supermarkets, don’t go to supermarkets just because you are allowed to. Stay home and chill. Take the chance to do stuff you wouldn’t normally do, like read more or learn something. It’ll make time pass faster,

    • Sure the Adelaide hot spot lockdown is acceptable but the regions is a joke and overboard .
Don't expect just 6 days that a lie and will be expanded .

      • We’ll see in 6 days

      • +1

BHP have a case in Roxby so it would seem it is warranted now

      • +1

The awesome thing about short dated call is it easy to see who’s right

        • Bingo!

    • +1

I told the wife this morning write out a shopping list and if you forget to add anything too bad because this is the first and last time I am going to the shops this lockdown

  • +2

I was raised in 3rd country, pff, lock down? U can still go out and buy stuffs

    • And the clarifications today about what are 'essential services' is generous.

      • I bet EB Games et al. wish they also sold bread now, would be doing gangbuster business on non bread products.

  • Some grocery stores have a butcher section inside. Grab your meat from there.
Korean store near our place had the cuts/marinades you would normally get at Korean BBQ restaurants.
Quieter than the Woolies across the road.

  • No bargain tips from me but my one is don't be an idiot like many Victorians looking for loopholes and shit that defeated the entire purpose of restrictions and lockdowns hence months and months of it continuing to spread.

  • +1

Well everything is still basically accessible today. No idea what people were doing yesterday. It there was any community virus out there, then what went on yesterday would now make it rife.

Only issue is the power went out here at 10am and its 70km winds and mid 30's. If you are north of the state it's 80km winds and in the 40's! Thankfully I just finished my setup to run the house from my car (EV) and have around 6 days of power. But people being locked down in the heat with no power… could make it a little more interesting. Be pretty disappointed with your hoarded food rotten on day 1.

  • +6

Not ozbargain-type advice, but in general: Don't ever trust the end date. Live every day like it's your last instead of hanging out for the next announcement or next restrictions date.

    • Yeah, incubation is 28days on average..I'm in no disillusion that this will be done in 6 days.

Then it's biphasic …so it will be back

  • Toilet > Shower

Unemployed or working from home during lock down?

Do the little things you have been putting off that is free.

    • clean the lint from all your pockets and use the lint to decorate avatars of politicians
    • scrape the dirt from the grooves of your shoes and use the dirt to build avatars of politicians
    • collect strands of hair off the floor and build avatars of politicians
    • build replica parliament house made of food packaging / food delivery packaging to house your avatars of politicians
    • brainstorm during toilet time
  • -1
    • Uncle Dan was right .. staying close to home was the go..albiet enforced.

  • -2

Our Coles was super generous with their nightly price reductions during the curfew.
Doughnuts and other items were getting reduced by 90-95%.

Other than that - comply as little as you can while getting away with it, all of this is BS, we only make it real with our obedience.

    • -2

      Thank you natural selection.

    • I guess what you are saying is time your once a day shopping run for around the 6 - 8pm mark and reductions will be had.
Bakeries here were forced to close today (govy balls up) and dump their stock. Colesworth must get their bread from bake fairies…so that's ok.

      • No one keeps track of the number of your grocery runs.

        • Yeah I know. But I'd like to keep my exposure to the absolute minimum. I know too much about SARS not to respect it. Do also love some sweet reduced goodies. Thankfully all the planets align with most reductions occuring at 'human dinner time', when the shops are also at the lowest capacity

Start your own phone sex line

Time isn't the only thing people will have on their hands :)

  • +2

Fellow South Australians, we are allowed to be pissed off with our government. For how they let the outbreak happen and for imposing lockdowns knowing it would cause panic buying.

Panic buying should be the last thing we want in a pandemic considering how close people get to each other.

Apparently people left the covid 19 testing line to go shopping (panic buy) yesterday after the announcement, if anyone cant see that happening they are being unfair to fellow South Australians.

    • +1

Panic buying started before lockdown was announced.

People should be allowed to be pissed off at other people, including you.

    • -1

Yeah, I don't recon anyone let the outbreak 'happen'. You just had to look at a shopping centre on Monday. Everyone had already forgotten about the whole social distance thing. It's just human nature. The very existence of a virus is to simply thin a saturated population, and SARS does a wonderful job of exploiting human nature. We are pack animals, we love close contact, our body language involves face contact. Viruses are too small and too simplistic not to get transmitted. Take the basic flu, been around forever, we can't shake it. SARS Covid has another three ACE's up it's sleave.

1 - it has a long incubation (so the host can spread it for weeks without knowing they are even doing it).
2 - it's got a decent protein coat and can last a little while on a surface.
3 - it's biphasic. So you think you have cleared it, but it has just been dormant and makes a comeback when a host is run down.

Let alone it's ability to morph it's receptors (making a global vaccine impossible I would think).

The only way someone could do a 100% job of stopping it's spread is to remove every mammal host in existence and burn every surface.

In summary, most people are doing their best to keep it away from our vulnerable, but it will never be enough to make this go away. We just need to get used to it being around and hope we can get multi strain vaccines to our vulnerable before it finds them. The government could do an indefinite lockdown, that's about the closest they can offer to safety.

As for the panic buying. That was just pure human selfishness and stupidity. No concern for their own family members or others. There is nothing that you cant get today. That basically made this lockdown null and void (for the first 14 days at least). I would have liked to have seen all shops remained shut immediately before the announcement. Ie. They wouldn't open in the morning. Then rolled out a plan providing a list of steps of what you need to do to obtain x goods over the next 2 weeks. Followed possibly by a rationing system, ie serving those born between 1940 and 1950 between 11-1, 5-6 pm etc. The big area I think the government continues to neglect is those who have it. The at risk elderly are unlikely to online shop for a delivery, so with a 14 day lockdown, they are likely to venture out eventually. I hope I'm wrong, but I haven't heard of a 'staples' delivery service for any family who test positive, elderly or at risk. I believe China do this..

      • Someone stuffed up. Either the female cleaner was lax and passed it on or the training and reinforcement of safe procedures was not up to scratch.

There were covid infected people in that hotel for months and then suddenly it gets out. Its cause someone screwed up.

        • Nah, it's just a virus..it's what they do. Anyway, we are blaming a pizza now.

  • +4

There will be a lot on noisy whingers complaining. Remember the majority are being quiet and doing what needs to be done. Stay strong and stay way from Murdoch media. Good luck SA. We are all pulling for ya!

    • +1

Well said, it doesn't matter what state or country the poor buggas who have contracted this come from. It could be anyone, it could be you next, it could be your elders. Support each other, do better than your best. It's a microorganism that's only job is to destroy it's host and the only 100% defense is distance.

  • Start your renovations RIGHT NOW.

    • I've layed all tiles, grouted walls and started connecting GPOs…and now having a beer ;)

  • Wear a mask. If your nose is showing you're doing it wrong.
And get into Twitch/gaming. If you do it right you won't even notice that you haven't left your desk for 6 days.

  • +1

    lol its only 6 days~~

  • If the 6 days then less restrictive 8 days actually happens then there's nothing to worry about, it's almost like Christmas - New Year break.
Since you don't have a curfew forced on you i'd suggest trying to shop at odd times to avoid crowds if you do need anything.
If this turns in to a longer thing, reassess then but keep in mind things like below.

I was glad I have plenty of camping gear as during the second harsher lockdown we did have some power outages (2-3), warnings about water quality etc.
Portable gas camp stove and small bottle on hand but ended up using the gas BBQ, lamps, torches and candles. Spare batteries and charged battery banks for phones \ tablets for entertainment.
Small tanks (10L & 20L) to store water (we've had water disconnection a couple times this year for maintenance work in the streets nearby during lockdowns), bottled water for drinking etc.
We already had some pre-made vacuum packed meals we had made, something we did prior to this for quick easy reheat meals - this saved trips out and ordering take-away (which was also limited for times of operation and delivery with curfew).

Pet food, just because you can get a take-away or have food don't forget any animals that live with you.

    • +1

If you are considering an PHEV/ EV in the future, do a search on here as I put a post on how to run your house from your car for $250. I got 13kw solar battery as well when they were $2990. So no power, no problemo.

      • Hey, yeah seen that and bookmarked that one aside for future reminders. No immediate plans for one but its on a list i'd look at if I were to do that.

  • +1

If the lockdown goes on for longer. Prices for things like gym equipment and WFH computer peripherals will go through the roof.

    • Desks and tables for all those WFH, IKEA was overrun with people trying to get a WFH setup done.

  • -1

Breaking news the guy that caused the lockdown lied about the Pizza shop that caused the lockdown .

Summary unnecessary lockdown and overreaction by SA authorities.
    Should be removed ASAP .

    • +1

Summary unnecessary lockdown and overreaction by SA authorities.

People are usually presumed innocent until proven guilty, you would assume people would be telling the truth.

If it was real, you wouldn't say the same, probably blame the gov for underreaction.

  • +6

Well it's over before it began! Had zero impact on me..never did a single thing different.

What I did learn is powdered milk in coffee is magnificent!

Used to hate the stuff, but tried the pink / skim woolies homebrand variety and it gave an uber creamy froth. Full bodied espresso.

GF approves (and this tells you PLENTY). This will now be my norm.

Give it a crack. Thanks lockdown.

P.S. Good job Nicola in trying to keep everyone safe and making big calls in the last few days. As for the media…grow up.

Covid Tips for SA from Victorians / Covid SA General Discussion

Tell the truth during contact tracing

  • +5

disappointed that the guy who lied to contact tracing will not facing any charges……

    • I never trust any media statements. The public always need a patsy, and it's always someone else's fault.. it was simply this guy's turn. Without being directly involved in ANYTHING the media reports, just ignore it. He may be guilty, maybe not …it's totally irrelevant.

35 cases yesterday.. lock down was required regardless. Period. How about just saying that, and reminding everyone there are still 35 cases. Prosecute / educate the bloke on the side (if true). This will only bring copy cats.

The message should be " Keep lockdown ish as much as you still possibly can. A couple of days gave enough time to see no extra public transmission (for now). Lockdown is over..until the next one. As for the shop hoarders, call your elderly, as your actions may just kill them next time."

Say it again, media …grow up.

  • Can we get a whose at fault post with some ms paint diagrams?

The cleaner at peppers who started it all
    Pizza boy,
    Pizza shop owner
    Sa gov
Channel 7 news reporter for asking mean questions like "should the state gov apologise for the lockdown"?

    Who are we missing?

    • Surely it is SA Labor's fault, for supporting the SA Liberals?

      • Yeah perhaps.

        Turbo Tom maybe?

    • Colonel mustard,..in the ballroom.. with hand sani'

Yes, our media is an embarrassment ..and more embarrassing is the public lynch mob who want to blame anything but the virus itself.

  • +2

So Gladys was right all along…

  • +1

It was an absolute blunder here in SA dudes. Lockdown announced with less than 24 hrs notice, sparking panic buying, hoarding stores etc. And suprisingly enough lockdown lifted within 48 hrs of announcing lockdown. Like its an absolute blunder businesses and people have lost so much due to that Stamford, Woodville pizza bar worker. And what does government do for compensation ?? Not punish that bloody individual. He shall be facing like a $10,000 fine. His words have devastated people's lives in SA.

Just why the (profanity) couldn't he just tell the authorities the truth???

And btw never before has the my town of Woodville have ever been so famous around the Australia, i live pretty close to that shop like 2 kms radius.

Disclaimer i am negative to result of covid 19 and never been or have used that place's services.

    • +1

Maybe the worker is on a student visa and shouldn't be working or is being paid cash and didn't want to attract the attention of the ATO

Here in VIC Dan made it clear that they weren't interested in following up anything that wasn't related to contact tracing and covered a bunch of these scenarios.
Not sure if there was a similar message in SA

      • Here in VIC Dan made it clear that they weren't interested in following up anything that wasn't related to contact tracing and covered a bunch of these scenarios.

So if the dude was doing something wrong like cash in hand not declaring tax, would dan be able to give immunity from Australian tax office? No of course not, he has no such power. My point is, what Dan did was irrelevant. And to declare that if you do things wrong and catch Covid you will be immune also sends the wrong message I would have thought.

        • Noone claimed that covid would give them immunity from the ATO. The point was made very clearly that they would not look into the circumstances of anything besides what related to contact tracing.

Turning a blind eye to a situation that may or may not have attracted the attention of other authorities is not the same as granting immunity.

          • @dny: Don't worry about my use of term immunity, just a turn of phrase.

Could Dan tell all authorities to "not look into the circumstances"? The answer is again no.

            • @cloudy: No, but he could and did guarantee that any information obtained from contact tracers would not be passed on and used for any purposes besides contact tracing. This gives the people on the receiving end of the interview incentive and confidence that any information they provide will not be used against them.

Kinda like how if you go to a doctor and seek help for drug abuse they're not going to call the cops and have them tail you to catch your supplier.

Again, turning a blind eye and actively telling authorities not to look into it are very separate issues.

        • You say what Dan did was irrelevant but I'm willing to bet if there was a public declaration that any information you provide to contact tracers won't be use against you, he probably wouldn't have lied in the first place.

          • @dny:

I'm willing to bet if there was a public declaration that any information you provide to contact tracers won't be use against you, he probably wouldn't have lied in the first place.

That's nice of you to speculate of what will happen if someone had unfettered powers. But no one does, and how can one judge that no matter the offence this is more important?

            • @cloudy: When you strip back your hyperbole I'm not sure what point you are trying to make exactly.

It's not hard to instruct you contact tracers to respect the person's confidentiality and VIC did just that and were very vocal about it. Your rambling on about unfeffed powers suggests to me you havent really grasped how contact tracing works and are more interested in taking credit away from a situation where credit is due.

              • @dny: Thanks for the personal dig

Here’s an example I have with a friend whom is a CT when I caught up for dins last night.

Man has virus, man kills girl he worked before he was sacked. If CT talks to said man, and man tells CT where he has been ie, to dead girls house the day girl is dead. Can a CT really “respect” privacy and not help police investigations into a murder? By the way, the story I bring up is the story on the news this week.

hyperbole? Not really, the only thing false in my story is the man didn’t have covid.

But of course it’s easy to dismiss something and have no imagination of consequences until it happens, in fact , isn’t that what happened when the young doctor in China reported covid and was slapped with punitive punishments by the Chinese government as spreading “Hyperbole”, until he died and covid hit the world.

I’m more interested in critical thinking than simply putting solutions without thought.

    • -1

Not stamford, the pizza place (or the pizza's fault). If you want to blame something…it would be over population. Put humans close to animals or each other… this happens. I'm sure one day Parvo will make its way into humans, but hey, we love our dogs. No fault of the bat, they don't want it either! The Stamford and the pizza guy were just in the path. Short of burning the place to the ground and everyone in it, you cannot make it safe. Could be yours or my turn next. Sure the pizza guy is probably earning extra coin on the side selling pizzas, meth and sad handies (Hanson Rd aint far away)…but it wouldn't make two shakes of shite difference. There are 35 active cases, that invokes a lockdown, not a rogue pizza man. The 'lie' is a media creation so we have someone to blame. Buy into it if you want, might make you feel better…but ultimately the blaim lies with too many humans on this planet and now we have a virus..simple as that. Can't get compensation from a virus. Cant sue a bat. I do feel for those gym owners etc, but the same for all those who lost everything in the bush fires. Can't sue a fire either. If there is blatant negligence (in both scenarios) you may have a claim. But I don't believe the hotel was blatantly negligent. The biggest risk was those who went shopping on that day and lined up. Businesses should be angry with them, and possibly themselves if they served them.

    • How can you contact trace a business and not know who works there? The guy lied, sure, but what a screw up by the contact tracers. Only way it's possible is if multiple people lied.

  • +1

I'm honestly disappointed the lockdown ended early… I was just starting to enjoy it.

  • Buy your groceries at smaller or independent/asian grocers. They're usually almost fully stocked when aldi/woolies/coles are completely empty.

    • Aldi here is pretty good. Colesworthians were saying they can't get flower, eggs or poo paper. Aldi shelves always had them. Probably should keep that quiet….hmm where's that edit button ;)

    • They're usually almost fully stocked when aldi/woolies/coles are completely empty.

You can pretty much join the dots.

      • Actually no. Please explain for me what you are inferring?
