  • Why Google cameras are so expensive.

    • +3

I'd roll with 'because they don't let randoms watch your teenage girl like Amazon ones' but I'd get flooded with 'but mah weak password' while missing the point that having internet connected cameras inside your house is inevitably going to result in your hooha appearing on the net at some time.

      • +2

Probably best to position them where your not likely to have your hooha seen… garage/front door area… unless you walk around naked everywhere ..then you are probably someone who likes people looking at their hooha :)

Thanks OP. Now I can watch my wonderful cat from work.

  • Mmmm easy to hack camera

    • Easy to hack, bad? or easy to hack, good?

      • Good! :D

I have the ring doorbell and echo show so thought this might be a cheap unit to add to the ecosystem. However ring plans are 40 for basic vs 150 for premium per year. Wish they'd introduce a middle plan for 2 devices

    • possible to record without subscription?

      • Yep. The plan just keeps it in the cloud longer.

        • but can't record to locally to microSD or similar? hm

      • No without a subscription you can only live view the cameras, there's no recording.

        • so then these things are pretty poor value, unless you're already invested (or want to be invested) into the Ring ecosystem.

          • @andresampras: Just like beauty, value is in the eye of the beholder. I have a stack of cameras, i only pay a flat fee of $150/yr for all cameras.

So i pay .about $2,88 a week for all cameras, i dont have to buy SD cards or local storage. and dont have to worry about getting that footage offsite for safety to prevent it being stolen, or opening ports on my local system to view it from my phone when out. I get extra features with the product like video sharing, snapshot capture, people mode etc. I also get extended warranties on all my cameras with the sub, and i also get 10% off future cam purchases.

So to get all that for $2.88/week for me is definitely worth it.

@LowRange: You're right, I should have said for me it'd be poor value… but YMMV, pros and cons have to be considered for each situation.

Can I ask how many cameras you have?

              • @andresampras: I've got 6 cameras, 3 floodlight cameras, a stickup cam and 2 indoor cams.

What i like is i've got a SmartThings hub and SmartThings on the TV. So when the Ring cameras detect motion they popup a live thumbnail view of the camera on the TV's with the option to view it full screen.

Also i've set a few of the Hue bulbs around the house like the bedside lamp etc to flash a different colour for 60 seconds depending what camera is triggered. So if the light pulses red i know someone is coming up the driveway, or green and someone is at the side etc.

Pretty handy system when your phone is on silent or in another room.

    • I agree!
I have the ring floodlight camera and it’s brilliant…
Would love another, but can’t justify paying 3 times the yearly fee for 1 extra camera…
Surely they are loosing customers but not having a middle tier plan…?

  • possible to connect to synology NAS?

    • No. Ring is Amazon. Very cloud-centric. Like Google, they want your data.

  • Bugger, black OOS

    • nevermind, still $75 on Amazon, thanks OP

  • Any idea if this can have motion sensor notifications activated mainly for delivery.

I was gonna buy this and use an extension cord to put it on the front window facing the door so I can check if my food delivery is there or coming while I'm in bed or on my pc etc.

But maybe the ring Door bell might be better since I know it has motion sensor notifications which I don't know if this does.

Can't get the cheaper peep-hole ring cam as my door does not have a peep-hole unfortunately but that model has knock impact sensor and motion sensor so would be ideal.

If anyone is an owner or knows if it has motion sensor detection mainly for detecting people at your door or front yard then I'm interested to know.

    Thanks.

    • Yes it it does have motion detection notifications with adjustable sensitivity and people only mode. Also has adjust zone so you don't get unwanted notifications. Hope this helps.

      • This is amazing information thank you. This helps a lot appreciate the info.

So it can be used a visitor notification device.

        Awesome.

        Thanks a lot.
