I always find it annoying that laundry sanitiser is so expensive when it's such a simple product… just a benzalkonium chloride solution, basically. They also usually have relatively foul scents added to them. So I was happy to see that Pine O Cleen released a fragrance free version. Usually $12 for the 1.5L — Amazon has them at 50% off, which is a good opportunity to stock up at a more reasonable price!

The "Fresh Cotton" variety which in my opinion has an unbearably strong fragrance is also available if that's your thing.

    Thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP bought one

  • Is this meant to clean the machine itself or to use on clothes that might be really dirty.

I am trying to figure out the use of this because it seems like an extra step to just adding laundry powder at the beginning.

We find that it gets rid of the general "man" or gym smells out of clothes.

      • I am just thinking if my clothes need it.

Mainly for work clothes as a cleaner but I find the powder fine enough but I am in contact with a lot of germs but I assumed the normal laundry powder took care of that e coli and etc.

      • This. Seems to work really well for gym clothes, particularly synthetic materials

And a regular detergent used to wash clothes would not do that?

This is sounds like unnecessary product for covid panic ppl. What this can clean that 60min of washing can't (even with a cold water) ? Any proof?

      • We are on tank water and find it cuts a second wash and rinse cycle out.

I aren't licking my clothes , 60c / 90m wash will enough for me, I been washing clothes for years. 🤪

Coronavirus isn't going to sustain a sudsy machine wash (which is basic science as the foaming will break apart the lipid layer of the virus, and should be easy enough to look up).

This is just another mass market product aimed at the super gullible, some of whom seem to be also downvoting you. How dare you ask a question? Especially a sensible one?!

As a matter of fact, you'll notice that the product does not claim to kill ANY virus if you look at the specs carefully.

      • Taken from the page itself..

✓ Removes 99.9% of bacteria*, even in a cold wash^. *E. coli, S. aureus^Proven to work at temperatures as low as 20°c
        ✓ Removes odour causing bacteria
        ✓ Dermatologically tested
✓ Leaves your laundry hygienically clean

        • If you google , 60c washing can kill all these. And some websites saying , even 45c is enough. Why do we overload our self with chemicals? There more chance of getting E coil just by touching a door nob. After all this is a bargain site, why waste money on unnecessary stuff.

          • @boomramada: The answer is that Australians typically do not hot wash. Most washing is done cold or 40 degrees, which is where a sanitiser can help. Also, there are specific use cases… say your kid is having a problem with school sores popping up on his body, you may want to use a chemical sanitiser to really clean the bedclothes.

Good for baby/toddler/teenager/grandparent clothes and sheets that get covered in wee and poo and vomit.

      • Exactly what I've been using it for. Don't know exactly how effective it is but surely can't be worse…

      • My parents and myself have not been using this. Never had any food poisoning by eating cloths yet.

    • I use this also for clothes which need the delicate wash cycle or cold hand wash only

If you want to be really thrifty you can buy algaecide from the pool chemicals section at Bunnings.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/hy-clor-2l-pool-algaecide_p30901…
Dilute 1:1 with water and you get the same as Canesten/Dettol laundry rinse.

    • I think the reason we're all here is because we're thrifty (to an extent) ;)

The regular Dettol liquid is not an algaecide as far as I know, but happy to be proven otherwise. It has antiseptic properties, and is a disinfectant of most bacterium, and will even get most fungi, but not algae.

I actually add eucalyptus oil to my laundry, makes the whole house smell great.

    • They had a bigger size on a special buy a few months ago, was either 3.50 or 4/litre

Haven’t used it yet, still going through my last stash of this pine o kleen from the last 50% special

    • Pretty mild smell, too

To think I've been wearing these germy clothes all my life - yuck.

  • Thanks Op. grabbed one.

  • You can just buy the woolies or coles home brand ones. Mind you they sometimes do stink terribly but that’s how you know they work

  • Woolworths replaced the fragrance free version with a foul lemon variant.

Thanks Op. Thought I'd give both flavours a go.

  • Fragrance free sold out. Only the fresh cotton available
