      updated the post

  • are these good even if you cant use cable?

  • What are dual band ax mesh systems like? Is it compromised by the lack of dedicated wireless backhaul?

Right now, there isn't much point going for WiFi 6/ax. The only somewhat cost effective client device that you can sort of take advantage of WiFi 6's speed is Intel AX200/AX201 (intel has released a new one which now supports WiFi 6E).

Despite iPhone 11, most Android flagship phones (Galaxy S10/S20 etc…) claiming WiFi 6 support, they only support 80Mhz channel bandwidth (which restricts its performance). It's very easy to get Wifi 6 support tag by just implementing some of the WiFi 6 features.

The chipset makers for mobile phone WiFi chipset have decided to jump to WiFi 6E instead of releasing a WiFi 6 with additional bandwidth. That makes sense, but it appears iPhone 12 does not have 6E support (kind of makes sense since there is hardly any WiFi 6E router(s) around. People were hoping Apple would do that this year, but… with the added cost and lack of router support, it turns out to be wishful thinking.

WiFi 6E makes more sense, but will chipset makers get their acts together and have chipsets working nicely moving forward. Right now, we are looking at Intel AX210 being the first WiFi 6E card you can buy that seems reasonably cost effective. Pity a WiFi 6E router will be quite expensive.

Poor performance, according to this review:

I had the 3 pack version and returned them. My old Wi-Fi 5 Orbi RBK50 is still much more powerful due to the dedicated wireless backhaul.

  • this or the Deco X20?
